An extraordinary one of a kind cocktail ring, created in New York city by the artist and goldsmith Arthur King, back in the 1970. This bold and massive ring is very rare and was most probably a special custom made order. Crafted by the lost wax method with geometric patterns in solid yellow gold of 18 karats with polished finish.
Emerald: Mounted in six-prongs, with 1 cushion cabochon cut (16 x 20 x 5 mm) carved with floral organic motifs in a natural green emerald with an approximate weight of 12.45 carats.
Weight: 35.20 Grams (22.57 Dwt).
Size: 6.5 and may be sized on request.
Measurements: 26 mm by 20 mm (1.02 x 0.79 Inches) and raise 14 mm over the finger
Hallmarks: Stamped with the maker's mark for Arthur King, the gold assay mark and signed, "KING 18KT".
Arthur Henry King
Born in New York in 1921.He was a very renowned American master jeweler located in New York city that work between the 1960 and 1970. His most notorious was the using of the lost wax technique to set gemstones in a naturalistic form. Arthur Henry King was a self-taught jeweler who favored free form over “correct” classical design. A World War II veteran, King learned the lost art of wax casting while working on scrap metal abroad. It was there that he decided to connect his life with jewelry, making the first piece of jewelry from metal and sharks-teeth. After leaving the Navy, Arthur King returned to his native New York, where he opened his shop on 4th Street in Greenwich Village in the 1950s. Due to the popularity of his products, the business expanded with increased sales in major department stores and boutiques both in the US and European capitals. Already in the 1960s, he had about twenty jewelry boutiques with beautiful interiors. Initially working in brass and silver, he later began using gold and palladium. Alongside rough organically shaped semi-precious stones he began using diamonds and other precious gems. His innovative freeform styles included organic materials, such as ivory, corals, and his favorite pearls. Noteworthy, during his travel to Thailand, Myanmar, and India he used to hunt for pearls himself engaged in deep-sea diving. A stunning very rare ring, created back in the late 1960's by the artist Jean Dinh Van for the house of Cartier. This sculptural piece has been crafted in solid yellow and white gold of 18 karats with high polished finish. This ring is part of the Cartier collection called Astrales.
History
This ring it belongs to the period of 1969 and 1970. In 1969, Michael Thomas became president of the New York City branch and was instrumental in hiring young designers who modernized the company’s lines such Cesar, Aldo Cipullo, Jean Dinh Van, Roger Lucas, Jean Mahie, and Lisa Sotilis. On October 03,1969, Cartier launched a collection of about 200 jewelry pieces entitled, Astrological, Underwater and Geometric, all designed by these young designers. We are sure this unique ring could be part of the pieces exhibited in that event.

History: This story began in 1938, when Robert Dumas, a member of the Hermès family, decided to take inspiration from a ship anchor chain to design a bracelet. Thus the Chaîne d'ancre was born: a naturally balanced jewel with a sporty yet chic allure. The historic legend of this jewelry line was between 1931 and 1938. It was during this approximate decade that Monsieur Dumas wandered around the seaside, a small sketch book in hand. In 1937, he logged a design for an anchor chain, a substitute for the colossal ones used on boats. Some time later, he sketched the idea for a clasp resembling a subtle mix between a Brandebourg and a Kabig breton. Except that no fabricant wanted to make a silver style, preferring in those days to work only with gold or platinum. A flashy symbol of wealth during the early 20th century, antique and vintage cocktail rings have gained broader appeal in the decades since for the hefty dose of glamour they bring to any ensemble.
Cocktail rings earned their name for their frequent appearances during glitzy cocktail parties at the height of the Prohibition era. Back then, these accessories were seen not only as statement pieces but as statements in and of themselves. They openly represented a sense of freedom and independence as well as a demonstration of opulence. After all, the 1920s heralded the Harlem Renaissance and Art Deco design, and a slew of social and cultural shifts meant that women in particular were breaking from pre–World War I conventions and embracing newfound freedoms to express themselves as individuals.
Women expressly wore cocktail rings on the fingers of their right hand versus the left, which was “reserved” for an engagement ring or wedding band, accessories definitely paid for by a suitor. And for cocktail rings, the bigger the colored gem at the center — which is usually mounted in a high setting — and the more elaborate the design, the stronger the likelihood of being noticed.
Cocktail rings remained a popular piece of jewelry for women until the 1930s, when the Great Depression and the onset of war marked a change in behaviors nationwide. While the 1960s and ’70s saw a return in visibility for the accessory, it wasn’t until the 1980s that cocktail rings once again assumed their position as a beacon of luxury and glitz.
During the 20th century, the range of dazzling cocktail rings seems to have been limitless, from glimmering gold rings set with carved jade diamonds designed by David Webb to Pomellato’s pink quartz confections to striking Gucci butterfly rings with accent diamonds set in a pavé fashion.
So, how do you wear a cocktail ring? Cocktail rings “can be worn for almost anything — dinners, date nights, parties, special events, on the red carpet,” explains David Joseph of New York-based jewelry brand Bochic.
Can you wear cocktail rings with other rings? “In my opinion, cocktail rings should stand on their own since they showcase a large gem in the center,” says Joseph.
These glamorous jewels can be worn inside or outside crowded taverns, in either daytime or nighttime with casual or dressy attire.
