About the Item

Ancient Roman Isis Fortuna intaglio ring. Set with an oval cornelian intaglio depicting a full length figure of the goddess Isis Fortuna, holding a rudder and cornucopia and wearing an Egyptian horned headdress, in a closed back rubover setting, encircled by a fine wirework border and flanked by integrated smoothly conforming shoulders which taper to a keeled D-shape shank. Tested yellow gold, approximately 7g in weight, circa 2nd-3rd century AD, accompanied by an Oxford Labs X-ray fluorescence report stating the composition of the metal. The goddess Isis Fortuna was a composite of the Egyptian goddess Isis and the Roman goddess Fortuna. Isis Fortuna here possesses the attributes of both goddesses, namely the horned headdress of Isis and Fortuna's rudder (referring to her control over the course of human lives), and the cornucopia (symbolising abundance and prosperity). Isis, associated with magic, motherhood, and salvation, had gained immense popularity in Rome, where her mystery cult promised personal renewal and an afterlife. When merged with Fortuna, the goddess of luck and destiny, she symbolized both providence and stability. Such rings, worn by individuals of status, likely served as apotropaic amulets, invoking the goddess’s favor for personal well-being, prosperity, and guidance. The prominence of Isis-Fortuna in Roman iconography underscores the Empire’s veneration of and integration of Egyptian deities into Roman spiritual and social life.
