About the Item

One of my all time favorite antique conversion pieces - this substantial and very striking gold signet ring uses part of a beautifully carved antique tiger's eye stick pin. King Tut's tomb was discovered in 1922, so I suspect the carved portrait depicts him and dates to the early Art Deco period, though it could be earlier. Crafted of solid 14K yellow gold, the signet ring features a wonderfully dimensional and glowing tiger's eye portrait of an Egyptian Pharaoh. The carving and the moving glow of the stone gives the portrait an almost three dimensional effect that is hard to capture in photos. Classic in design and quite hefty, this is a special statement ring that can be worn by a man or a woman. Measuring a little over 3/4 of an inch x a hair under 3/4 of an inch (19.5 x 17 mm) the Pharaoh's face is bezel set, with a total rise off the finger of approximately 9.9 mm at the highest point - the top of his headdress. (this ring has some drama!) The hand carving has a streamlined style, with the features very sensitively portrayed. The play of rich gold color on the deep brown of the stone is marvelous, as the ring is moved in the light. We gave the setting an open back, so you can also view the gorgeous striations of color on the reverse of the stone. In very good condition, the tiger's eye shows only very, very slight wear under magnification. Solid and hefty, we used 12 grams of gold to create the classically designed mounting. The shoulders taper from approximately 16.3 mm to approximately 3.7 mm at the back of the band. On my scale, the finished weight of the ring is 14.26 grams. Currently a size 8, the ring can be sized up or down several sizes if desired.
