‘Kiawe at Hilo Bay’ oil painting by American Realist artist Peter Loftus, who is known for captivating breathtaking color-rich nature scenes through shadow and light in his oil on canvas paintings that reflect western and Hawaiian environments. Loftus is known for his meticulous realist oil paintings that feature ocean-scenes, babbling brooks, mountain ranges and their vistas, as well as figures and people. Artist signed, titled and dated Verso. Peter Loftus was born in 1948, in Washington DC. He received a BFA in painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art, in 1971. In 1974, Loftus earned an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania. Drawn by the glorious California light, Loftus moved to Santa Cruz in 1975. He has lived and painted there ever since. Loftus taught at both University of California at Santa Cruz and Cabrillo Community College between 1975, through the present (at UCSC). He taught Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Drawing, and Painting, in both oil and aqueous media. During that time, he also sustained a rigorous exhibition schedule, showing regularly on the East and West coasts; in New York at Fischbach Gallery, and San Francisco at William Sawyer Gallery and later Hackett-Freedman Gallery. In addition, Loftus has participated in a number of group exhibitions. These include: American Realism: 20th Century Drawings and Watercolors (and accompanying book), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, New Horizons in American Realism: Flint Institute of Arts, Flint, MI. Loftus is also included in several publications, including: "The Artist as Native: Reinventing Regionalism" by Alan Gussow, "Capturing at Distinct Light", Feature Cover and Article: American Artist Magazine; "Art in Embassies, Bagdad, Iraq", Feature Cover, and Article; Artworks Magazine: "Peter Loftus", feature article. About the artist: Since his birth in Indianapolis, Indiana on May 19, 1921, Don Peters has continually expressed his multifaceted talents. While serving in the US Marine Corps. at the age of 19, Don received his first international recognition from combat sketches made between 1942 and 1945. Exhibited in the National Galleries of London and throughout the US. These sketches earned Don a scholarship from the National Newspaperman's Association, metaphysics, spiritual space, romantic realism and miniaturism. His preference for the rapidly drying medium of acrylic allows Don to achieve drama in his color placement. He began his career in Hollywood in 1953, where he worked with Walt Disney, M.G.M., Paramount, Twentieth Century Fox, Warner Brow., Columbia and Filmation. In 1964, Don won the Venice Film Festival award for his screenplay, "The Soldier." Also, in 1966, Don received the Academy Award Nomination for the original screenplay and story "Naked Prey". 1971 Don was a background Artists on the film Journey Back to OZ aka Return to OZ. Don Peters' Mean Machine design Peters later helped design the 1968-69 Hanna-Barbera cartoon series Wacky Races for Iwao Takamoto and Jerry Eisenberg, as Eisenberg recalled: "Iwao designed Penelope Pitstop and her car... And then there was some guy named Don Peters, who Iwao knew from his days at Disney, he was a designer. And he got Don to do some freelance help, and he designed that car that Dick Dastardly had, it looked like a Captain Nemo-type car, you know, like a submarine. Michael Sarraille Rocky Mountain Landscape Oil Painting Remarkably elegant Western mountain landscape oil painting by noted Bay Area artist Michael Sarraille. Original oil on canvas. Dimensions 14" x 11". The frame measures 18.25" x 15.5". Painting needs a cleaning. Frame shows dings and nicks. The painting shows some craquelure at the upper left in the trees, and could use a cleaning in the upper right portion on the painting (please see all images). Even with these condition issues, we consider this to be one of the finest realism paintings in our collection. With a closer look, we think you'll agree. This is really a beautiful illuminated scene of the Rocky Mountain Front, possibly in Montana. Michael Sarraille expresses the beauty of the land in his works. Intricate in his detail, yet simple in his compositions, this unique combination brings to focus a feeling of unpretentious realism. His mountains stand tall with a magnificence of crisp beauty. Sarraille has delved into the areas of both surrealism and realism. Perhaps this is why his combination of color, rhythm and design mix so beautifully in his landscape scenes. His paintings seldom appear on the market. Even though this needs a bit of a cleaning, it's still a great American West painting.

Peter Loftus was born in 1948, in Washington DC. He received a BFA in painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art, in 1971. In 1974, Loftus earned an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania. Drawn by the glorious California light, Loftus moved to Santa Cruz in 1975. He has lived and painted there ever since. Loftus taught at both University of California at Santa Cruz and Cabrillo Community College between 1975, through the present (at UCSC). He taught Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Drawing, and Painting, in both oil and aqueous media. During that time, he also sustained a rigorous exhibition schedule, showing regularly on the East and West coasts; in New York at Fischbach Gallery, and San Francisco at William Sawyer Gallery and later Hackett-Freedman Gallery. In addition, Loftus has participated in a number of group exhibitions. These include: American Realism: 20th Century Drawings and Watercolors (and accompanying book), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, New Horizons in American Realism: Flint Institute of Arts, Flint, MI. About the artist: Carlo Wahlbeck was born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1933. His studies from early youth included travel and visits to major museums in Europe. During a visit to the United States, Carlo was introduced to the Native American Indian and the rich history of the American West. He moved to Southern California in 1960 and still calls it home today. Between 1960 and today, Carlo has traveled throughout the Southwestern United States and Mexico. For many years, he lived among the Navajo and Zunis, painting a great many surreal works that embodied their legends and outlook. He also spent 2 years in Mexico living among the Huichol people in the inaccessible mountains north of Tepic, painting the Indian religion and the white man's religion as seen through Huichol eyes. Between 1979 and today, he mastered the technique and came to control it, producing a fabulous new medium base for his expressions. It is signed at the lower right corner by the artist. Also signed, dated, and titled on the back. The canvas board size is 12 x 16 inches, framed size is 22 x 26 inches. Framed in an ornate wooden gold frame, with black velvet liner. It is in generally excellent condition, the frame have some minor restorations, barely visible and 2 small area where the velvet is scratched. About the artist: Xavier J Barile was a Social Realist painter, teacher, lecturer, graphic artist, and writer. He was born March 18, 1891, in Tufo, Italy. His love of beauty manifested itself at a very early age. During his early teens, he used to design monograms for the young girls of his home town, Tufo, Italy, to embroider on their most precious possession, their hope chest and trousseau. In 1907, his mother brought him, his two younger brothers and two sisters to New York, to join their father who had been in New York for several years, preparing the way. He quickly learned English and spent some time helping his father, who was earning a living for the family as a tailor. Having learned English well, Barile then enrolled in the Evening Art Classes at Cooper Union Institute in New York. In due course he enrolled in the Art Students League, New York City. Here he came under the influence of John Sloan, Reginald Marsh and Victor Perard as teachers and George Luks, Robert Henri and Everett Shinn of "the Eight" as friends and colleagues. In 1939 John Sloan dedicated his book, Gist of Art as follows, "To my old friend, first monitor of my first class at the Art Students League 1914." This friendship and mutual regard lasted until Sloan's death in 1951. Of course, it was only natural that Barile should be a part of the "Ashcan School," painting the New York Scene. During this time that he was on his own he worked with all mediums - oil, watercolor, pastel, casein, charcoal, etc. - and he did some fine work with monotypes. It was during these years, the 20's and 30's, that he began to exhibit in such places as the Whitney Studio Club (forerunner of the Whitney Museum of American Art), The Kit Kat Club, The Anderson Gallery, The Cincinnati Museum, The New Mexico Museum, National Society of Painters in Casein, The Salmagundi Club and many other exhibits throughout the United States. He is currently represented in The National Collection of Fine Arts (NCFA) Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. In the mid 30's, like many another struggling artist, XJB worked on the WPA Art Project. One of the murals he worked on is in the U.S. Customs House, Bowling Green, N.Y.C. In this project he collaborated with Reginald Marsh who was the supervisor of this phase of the work. The years until 1939 were spent working in all parts of the United States and in conducting his own classes for aspiring artists. In 1939, on the recommendation of John Sloan, he became the founder, first teacher and Chairman of The Department of Fine Arts, Pueblo Junior College, Pueblo Colorado...
