A Large Avocado & Blue Enamel Metal Bowl by the Hanova of Pasadena.

HANOVA OF PASADENA
Hanova began 1962 is a collaboration between Erwin Prust and Bob Hill in Hollywood, California. Prust and Hill experimented using a small furnace to improve the technique of enamel coating on steel rather than the typical base metal of copper. Prust and Hill moved the production to Pasadena, California. Hill designed pieces and Prust, with his background in porcelain enamel processes, perfected the techniques and managed production. During this time, Prust honed and finally perfected the enamel lava and crazing texturing technique on steel that signifies their distinctive pieces.
The process of perfecting the surface was a lengthy one. The finish required three coats of enamel to be fired independently at about 1400 degrees. The steel was cleaned and etched, and fired with a base coat. Secondly came a coat of olive-colored enamel. The third and final coat was the primary color of the piece that revealed the olive color underneath. Rust, mustard, turquoise, blue and green were the most popular of the 10 colors. Each piece was unique and random in its texturing.
The company ran a small operation, with only 2 to 3 employees as a production workshop team. In 1967, Hill’s enthusiasm for the business had all but died, and he sold his share to Prust. After Hill, who was the the primary designer for the company, Prust hired Charles Chaney...

Multi-disciplinary artist Mario Dal Fabbro was born in Cappella Maggiore, Italy in 1913. He trained in his family's furniture design shop prior to attending both the R. Superior Institute for Decorative and Industrial Arts in Venice as well as Magistero Artistico, graduating with high honors in 1937.
From the years of 1938-1948 Dal Fabbro immersed himself in furniture design and academia. Primarily, he designed furniture for both design houses and private clients. Del Fabbro participated in the Triennale de Milano competition in both 1939 and 1947 and won the Ganzatti Contest for 'Standardization of Furniture". During this period he also contributed to the Italian design publications Domus and Stile and the French magazine L'Architecture D'Aujourd'hui.
In 1948 Mario Dal Fabbro immigrated to America and began designing furniture for mass production, working for J.G. Furniture in New York and Quakertown, PA. During his years steady employ, he published Modern Furniture: Its Design And Construction in 1949 and contributed regularly to The New York Times and House and Garden. This exceptionally life-like antique sculpture is carved from linden wood and once decorated a French church or cathedral. The figure stands authoritatively, with right arm raised and index finger extended toward heaven. It probably stood on a base in a side chapel.
According to Christian iconography of the period, this gesture signifies that salvation comes only through baptism. The figure wears a girdle of animal fir, probably from a bear, making symbolic reference to St. John the Baptist's life in the wilderness of Judea, between Jerusalem and the Dead Sea. The elegantly carved robe is a baroque element that adds a sense of motion and energy to the artwork. Originally, the sculpture was polychromed, but the original pigments have weathered away and been replaced with whitewash.
