18th Century Italian Marquetry Chest Of Drawers Museum Quality, Milan ca. 1760
Located in Lichtenberg, AT
An absolute masterpiece of mid 18th century Italian craftsmanship is this unbelievable artfully crafted marquetry chest of drawers out of Milan. Made around 1760 with highest attention to details, this one of a kind museum-quality commode is not only a precious item of antique furniture, much more it is a real smart investment. The very time-consuming restoration of this masterpiece took us more than 9 weeks and has been done by our most experienced master of restoration. The ultimate goal was it to restore it the old way to keep the unbelievable charme of this valuable 18th century dresser. With an age of more than 260 years, this remarkable rare chest of drawers comes with an elegant shaped body made of spruce and poplar, elaborately set nutwood/ cherry veneer and incredible marquetry works all over this unique italian commode. Providing two large drawers, this outstanding 18th century dresser is adorned by fantastic looking, inlayed depicitions of women surrounded by extensively designed round frames made of maple, nut and plum wood. The largest depiction on the front even runs over both drawers. The top plate is an absolute highlight, impressing with this amazing worked 3D-effect frame made of fine ebony, maple and plum wood which looks like a spiral. The same design has also been used on the front of this precious chest of drawers. The second frame with a slight green shine has been additionally surrounded by thin maple threads. Other exceptional 3D effect maple inlays in form of chain links can be found on both sides of the front pilasters. This exceptional "chain" effect is reinforced by so-called "Schwarlot" paintings - a technique which confers it this special depth. An incredibly crafted, one of a kind 18th century Italian chest of drawers...

18th Century, Italian Policrome Lacquered Wood Chest of Drawers
Located in IT
18th century, Italian Policrome Lacquered Wood Chest of Drawers This small and elegant chest of drawers was made in Genoa, northern Italy, around the middle of the eighteenth century. This model of dresser is inspired by the models that spread in France in the Louis XV period and to which all the cabinet makers were immediately inspired. It consists of four drawers, of which two smaller upper. It has a wooden structure entirely lacquered in light ocre decorated with floral and foliate decorations and compositions of still life of fruit in shades of red. The handles and mouthpieces of the locks are in finely chiseled burnished bronze, typical of the Louis XV era. The molded top is in Rosso Francia marble, a marble from abroad that at the time was very precious and expensive. The dresser has the front and the sides moved by the move line, legs thin and slightly curved. The front legs are embellished with burnished bronze chiseled tips shaped like acanthus leaf. This piece of furniture is quite rare because of its small size that make it easy to fit into any environment. Very decorative due to its sinuous lines and its fine decoration, it is suitable both next to antique furniture...

Late 16th Century Genoan Bambocci Chest of Drawers
Located in Saint-Ouen, FR
Provenance: Gismondi collection, before 1973. Historical Context This walnut wood and walnut burl cassetone is a remarkable example of Mannerist art applied to furniture in the late 16th century. While the Mannerist movement appeared and grew in Florence before acquiring its international stature it also spread to Northern Italy as soon as the late 16th century early 17th century. To the opposite of the rest of Italy where classic motifs are adopted very early, northern regions maintain the use of Renaissance motifs very late all through the 17th century. Sculpture now leaving the austere environment of churches and civil buildings appear in private homes where it graces state rooms and studies. This craze is particularly expressed on furniture from Liguria and particularly in Genoa where are produced highly carved furnitures with figures and spectacular decors called bambocci. This typically Genoese pieces express nonetheless a Florentine origin through Mannerism. Description This Genoese chest is framed by small figures skilfully carved from one wood chunk...

Rare Charles II Period Chest
Located in Lymington, GB
This exceptional 17th-century chest / cabinet has one long working drawer, and one deep drawer, with cupboards retaining internal shelving below. All faced with elaborate, mitred, geometric mouldings, applied split balusters, carved corbels, roundels and engraved mother-of-pearl and bone panels. Some panels apparently in ebony. Dentil cornice to the frieze. Bun feet replaced following the original design. Great colour, old surfaces and overall condition is excellent. It conveniently divides into two sections. Circa 1660. Provenance: Lisgoole Abbey, N. Ireland. Literature: R. W. Symonds, 'The Present State of Old English Furniture', Duckworth, London (1921) fig. 7, dated 1673. Vis a very similar 17th c chest. Percy Macquoid RI, 'A History Of English Furniture - The Age Of Oak', Lawrence & Bullen, London (1904-08) p. 76, figs. 140 & 141, for two similar chests of ''well considered proportions and details’’. Figs. 203 - 210 exhibit further similarities in design, and MacQuoid states that “the fashion for these chests must have been great, as many varieties of them… followed rapidly upon one another in date” [sic] pp. 97-99. Viz p. 77, fig. 141 (Oak chest with drawers). The top opens in a long drawer, below is a very deep drawer, panelled in strong projection, the bevels of which are of so-called zebra or snake-wood. The lower portion of the chest, opening in two doors... [sic]. Nb. The chest illustrated in Macquoid is of oak, but in 1680 it was probably to match some other furniture, painted black and lacquered in what was then termed ''The Indian Taste'', so very fashionable for a time. The bone and pearl inlay is very cleverly imitated in the lacquer-work. Ralph Edwards CBE FSA, 'The Shorter Dictionary of English Furniture', Hamlyn, London (Fourth Impression 1972) “The next stage in the evolution (of the chest) was delayed until c. 1650, when a hybrid form, half cabinet and half chest...
