Born in Vinhedo, a small town on the outskirts of Sao Paulo, Brazil, Walter Briski, Jr. began his interests in photography at the age of thirteen. He later moved to the city of Sao Paulo to pursue his passion, and after completing his studies at the Pontificia Universidade Catolica de Campinas, he began his career as a fashion photographer working with top national magazines such as “Brazilian Vogue,” “Brazilian Interview,” and “Trip.”
Soon after, Briski moved to New York City in pursuit of advancing his career. In search of strengthening his art, he learned to master the technique of black-and-white printing while employed at a highly ranked film production house. There, he printed works for artists such as Bruce Weber, Annie Leibovitz, Gordon Parks, Matthew Barney, Steven Klein, Steven Meisel, Steven Sebring, and Ellen Von Unwerth.
In the midst of printing images that were reproduced in magazines such as “Vogue,” “Harper’s Bazaar,” “W,” “L’Uomo Vogue,” “I.D.,” “Arena,” “The New York Times Magazine,” and “Interview,” he also began printing his own photographs. Robert Giard is best remembered for his figurative and portrait photography. He received a B.A. from Yale (1961), then an M.A. in Comparative Literature from Boston University (1965). For a time he taught intermediate grades at the New Lincoln School, but by 1972, he began to photograph, concentrating first on landscapes of the South Fork of Long Island, portraits of friends (many of them artists and writers in the region), and nude figures. His most famous work includes formal portraits of significant gay and lesbian authors, including Edward Albee, Allen Ginsberg, David Leavitt, and Michael Cunningham...

If Hugh Hefner strove to put a sleek, air-brushed image on sexual freedom in the 1960s, rival publisher Al Goldstein was the polar opposite. Unabashedly abrasive and foul-mouthed, the cigar-chomping, a larger than life Goldstein called his explicit magazine Screw.
When he co-founded Screw in 1968, the American legal system was embroiled in a battle over what constitutes obscenity. Goldstein never envisioned himself as a champion of free speech, but fought for what he said were his own prurient interests.
