About the Item

Louis Comfort Tiffany 1848-1933 American White Mountains of New Hampshire Signed "Louis C. Tiffany" (lower right) Watercolor Louis Comfort Tiffany, best known for his revolutionary glass innovations, was a multi-talented artistic genius and one of the most important artistic craftsmen in American history. Painting was Tiffany's first passion, and this exceptional watercolor demonstrates why he became internationally recognized for his stunning compositions. In White Mountains of New Hampshire, Tiffany expertly captures the picturesque beauty of the New England landscape—embodying his fascination with color, light and nature that would define his entire life's work. Tiffany's masterful technique renders the brilliance of the sunlight, the lushness of the forest floor and the texture of the majestic trees all with mesmerizing naturalism. The hazy mountain in the distance is perfectly framed by rocks and trees brought into sharp relief, drawing the viewer into the scene. This subject, the White Mountains of New Hampshire, only appears one other time in Tiffany's vast oeuvre—in the monumental Hartwell Memorial window now at the Art Institute of Chicago. Installed in 1917 in Providence, Rhode Island, the Hartwell window is one of Tiffany's most complex and iconic, and this watercolor captures Tiffany's early exploration of the subject for this significant commission. Born in 1848, Louis Comfort Tiffany was the son of Charles Lewis Tiffany, founder of the famed Tiffany & Co. Encouraged in his artistic pursuits, he studied under landscape painter George Inness, who instilled in him a deep sensitivity to light, color and nature. Tiffany first exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1867 and soon embarked on extensive travels through Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, sketching and painting along the way. By the 1880s, Tiffany had earned acclaim as both a painter and designer, exhibiting alongside artists such as Winslow Homer and Thomas Moran. His mastery of watercolor, influenced by travel companion Samuel Colman, complemented his oils and helped secure his reputation as one of America’s leading artists. International honors soon followed, including a gold medal in Paris in 1900, membership in the Legion of Honor and prizes across Europe, Japan and the United States. Today, his watercolors grace important museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and rarely appear on the market. Marschlandschaft (mit drei Hausern) by Emil Nolde
By Emil Nolde
Located in New Orleans, LA
Emil Nolde 1867-1956 German Marschlandschaft (mit drei Häusern) Marshland (With Three Houses) Signed “Nolde” (lower right) Watercolor on Japan paper A work of engaging richness and emotion, Marschlandschaft (mit drei Häusern) invites the viewer directly into the heart of the intuitive, poetic world of Emil Nolde. An essential figure in the German avant-garde, Nolde’s highly modern oeuvre stands as an important precursor to the Abstract Expressionists of the mid-20th century. With its vivid colors and emotional intensity, the present work is exemplary of his output, containing all of the best characteristics of his mature style. Brilliant, amorphous fields of color suggest the vast, marshy landscape of Nolde’s native Schleswig-Holstein region near the German-Danish border. The artist’s application of paint is powerful and dramatic, conveying with a few brushstrokes the impression of passing storm clouds, allowing light and sky to peek through and illuminate the colors of his landscape. A sense of fluidity and immediacy were of great importance to Nolde. He once said, “I try to avoid all thinking. A vague concept of color and luminosity suffices, and the picture evolves during the act of painting.” The flow and spontaneity of watercolor lent themselves well to Nolde’s creative approach, and he achieved a vibrancy in the medium that is unsurpassed. Nolde is considered one of the most important exponents of German Expressionism and was one of the most prominent representatives of the avant-garde in Germany. His participation in the seminal group Die Brücke (The Bridge) links him to one of the earliest artists' associations which had a crucial impact on the development of modern art. His interplay of color and form set him apart from his contemporaries, and his work is recognized as a monumental step toward modernism. However, Nolde’s work was derided in his day by the Nazi regime in Germany, and he was forbidden from painting. Deemed too “decadent,” 33 of his works were displayed in the infamous Entartete Kunst, Degenerate Art Exhibition in Munich in 1937, labeling the artist's works as a “threat” to Germany. The Nazi Party destroyed hundreds of Nolde's works and confiscated over one thousand more — the greatest number of any artist — highlighting the rarity of the present composition. Throughout his career, Nolde received numerous awards, including the Print Prize of the XXVL Venice Biennale and the Order “Pour le mérite...

Concours de Chiens au Promenade by Otto Eerelman
By Otto Eerelman
Located in New Orleans, LA
Otto Eerelman 1839-1926 Dutch Concours de Chiens au Promenade Watercolor on paper Signed “O. Eerelman 1904” (lower left) A tour de force watercolor by celebrated Dutch artist Otto Eerelman, one of 19th-century Europe's most popular and important animal portraitists, this charming composition captures a bustling cross-section of fashionable elites walking their equally fashionable canine companions. Eerleman takes care to render the detailed attire of his subjects, complete with plumed hats and layers of lace trim. The artist paints the plethora of pets in equally painstaking detail, capturing the nuances of each different breed represented. Eerelman mastered the art of depicting not only the dogs’ physical characteristics but also their unique expressions and personalities. His wealthy clientele would bring their pets to his home in The Hague where they would live for a period of time while having their portraits done, allowing for a remarkably true-to-life portrayal. This energetic watercolor, with its profusion of color and texture, harnesses the affluence of its subjects and the leisurely whimsy of their luxurious lives. Hailing from Groningen, Netherlands, Eerelman was dubbed the “Northern Rembrandt” during his lifetime. He received his artistic training at the Academy Minerva in Groningen, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and then private lessons in the studio of the great Lawrence Alma Tadema. He successfully captured the attention of the Dutch court, particularly Princess Wilhelmina...

Taroudant

Signed, inscribed and dated "R. Pinatel / Taroudant / 1926" (lower right) Oil on panel A stunning ode to the Moroccan landscape, this oil on panel was composed by the French Orientalist painter Raphaël Pinatel, whose lively works adeptly translated the romanticism of the East for a Western audience. The present work, which captures a market in Taroudant, a city in southeastern Morocco, exemplifies the artist’s distinctive approach as he brilliantly translates the energy and atmosphere of the desert city. Pinatel’s style is impressionistic in his brushwork and handling of light and atmosphere. In the present work, he brilliantly captures the effects of the direct desert sun...

View of Dunoon on the Clyde
Located in Hillsborough, NC
Scottish artist Robert Carrick (1829-1904) is renowned for his landscape and figurative paintings in oil and watercolor. This painting features detailed drawings of figures in the foreground with wagon, and the town and scenery in the background, painted over in watercolor in rich raw umber and red-brown tones in the foreground and blue green tones in the background. Carrick showed promise at a young age, exhibiting his work at the Royal Academy age 16. He was a member of the Royal Institute. This two-toned watercolor work has detailed figures, wagon with hay in the forefront above a view of Dunoon town near Glasgow as it was long ago. Signed by the artist, lower left with an inscription that reads: 'View of Dunoon, Argyllshire drawn by Robert Carrick, Glasgow, for David Allan'. Verso includes a copy of the same inscription. Saltire Gallerie replaced the cracked and dirty plain glass with art glass and added an acid-free paper behind the work. While doing this work we found an art giclee, included with the painting. Presented in a patterned wooden frame with art glass. Dunoon was a thriving town on the river at the time of this work, and later became part of Glasgow. The view from above the town is a popular one, as Saltire Gallerie has another view of Dunoon from above by Scottish artist Patrick Downie...

Watercolor of the Oak Tree by Allen Tucker
By Allen Tucker
Located in Hudson, NY
Landscape watercolor by Allen Tucker of an oak tree. This piece, along with several others, was gifted to Una Brage, a friend of the artist in the 1930s. More about this artist: Allen Tucker, was an architect and painter so influenced by Vincent Van Gogh that he was called "Vincent in America". (Gerdts 291) Robert Henri and Maurice Prendergast were also credited as having an influence on Tucker's brushwork and compositions, the latter decisively. However, as his painting evolved, he did not fit into any tidy slot for description and was known as an individualist not easily categorized in American art history. Tucker was born in Brooklyn in 1866 and graduated from the School of Mines of Columbia University with a degree in architecture and took a job as an architectural draftsman in the architectural firm of McIvaine and Tucker, his fathers business. During that time, he studied painting at the Art Students League with Impressionist John H. Twachtman, but it was not until around 1904, when he was 38, that Tucker became a full-time painter, leaving architecture behind. Many of his early canvases were classically Impressionistic with poplar trees resembling those of Van Gogh and haystacks and corn shocks...
