Contemporary Mixed Media

CONTEMPORARY STYLE

Used to refer to a time rather than an aesthetic, Contemporary art generally describes pieces created after 1970 or being made by living artists anywhere in the world. This immediacy means it encompasses art responding to the present moment through diverse subjects, media and themes. Contemporary painting, sculpture, photography, performance, digital art, video and more frequently includes work that is attempting to reshape current ideas about what art can be, from Felix Gonzalez-Torres’s use of candy to memorialize a lover he lost to AIDS-related complications to Jenny Holzer’s ongoing “Truisms,” a Conceptual series that sees provocative messages printed on billboards, T-shirts, benches and other public places that exist outside of formal exhibitions and the conventional “white cube” of galleries.

Contemporary art has been pushing the boundaries of creative expression for years. Its disruption of the traditional concepts of art are often aiming to engage viewers in complex questions about identity, society and culture. In the latter part of the 20th century, contemporary movements included Land art, in which artists like Robert Smithson and Michael Heizer create large-scale, site-specific sculptures, installations and other works in soil and bodies of water; Sound art, with artists such as Christian Marclay and Susan Philipsz centering art on sonic experiences; and New Media art, in which mass media and digital culture inform the work of artists such as Nam June Paik and Rafaël Rozendaal.

The first decades of the 21st century have seen the growth of Contemporary African art, the revival of figurative painting, the emergence of street art and the rise of NFTs, unique digital artworks that are powered by blockchain technology.

Major Contemporary artists practicing now include Ai Weiwei, Cecily Brown, David Hockney, Yayoi Kusama, Jeff Koons, Takashi Murakami and Kara Walker.

"Lucifers Limit" 18K Gold Sculpture 8' x 2' in Edition of 10 by Colin Burn
Located in Culver City, CA
"Lucifers Limit" 18K Gold Sculpture 8' x 2' in Edition of 10 by Colin Burn Rose Gold, Diamond & Gem Sculpture NOTE: preparation time may take up to 8 weeks. The Lucifer devil olisbos sculpture is formed with pure 24k gold and finished in 18k rose gold featuring 18k white gold collar with 5 carats of reverse set flawless diamonds. The devils horns are 18k white gold pave' set with sparkling white diamonds and the 18k white gold eyes and tongue set with rich red garnets. The piece embodies sinful self lust and passion. Sculpture comes with Limited Edition Artist Certificate of Authenticity and Jewelry Certificate of Materials. Limited Edition - 10 Only Artists Inspiration: “My motivation to create this sculpture was to highlight how some in society view masturbation as a devils act. The piece portrays the view by embracing our inner demons, we remove any power others may hold over us in ones pursuit of so called sinful pleasure. In addition I wanted the work to be reflective of boundaries by creating a reverse set diamond collar, drawing the line on how far you are willing to go in pursuit of self pleasure. The rose gold represents warmth and the rich red garnet set tongue portrays the devils fiery entrance or his gateway to hell for those who have exceeded the boundaries.” The sculpture embodies sinful lust and passion and is electroformed from pure 24k gold, finished in 18k rose gold, featuring 18k white gold collar reverse set with 5 carats of flawless diamonds. The horns are 18k white gold, pave' set with flawless diamonds and the eyes and tongue set with rich red garnets. ABOUT COLIN BURN: Australian artist Colin Burn is a bold provocateur in the world of conceptual art, using his work to disrupt societal norms and spark critical dialogue often around uncomfortable truths. His art pushes boundaries, urging viewers to rethink their assumptions on value, power, and meaning, especially in contexts often deemed taboo or overlooked. Known for his masterful fusion of symbolism and opulence, Burn transforms ordinary objects into potent allegories, frequently employing their high monetary value to amplify the emotional and intellectual resonance of his themes. He understands that society frequently ties value to price, and this awareness is central to his approach. With an attention-grabbing allure, Burn’s work invites viewers to look beyond the surface, encouraging them to explore the deeper, often concealed meanings behind what they see—reminding them that true value lies not only in the material cost, but in the idea or theme that it represents. A compelling example of this is his Pearl Royale chess set...

Hybrid 14 - Abstract Yellow Cactus Floral Bronze and Enamel Wall Sculpture
Located in Los Angeles, CA
There is a metaphorical interplay between the natural imagery international artist, Jennyfer Stratman, uses and its multiple meanings. While the human figure features strongly, it is the essence of the body that is important to her, not the representation. Particularly, the artist imagines trees and branches as a figurative link between the natural environment and our physical presence. The implied internal landscape of the body can also be reflected in how our surroundings from birth affect our sense of identity. By exploring landscapes of the body and mind, she also hopes to comment on the larger picture of our impact on the natural world. This exquisite bronze and enamel sculpture is meant to be installed as a wall hanging that sits 2 inches away from the wall. As displayed, this sculpture measures 8.5 inches high and 17.5 inches wide. It is signed by Stratman on the front and back. Free local Los Angeles delivery. Affordable Continental U.S. and International shipping available. A certificate of authenticity issued by the art gallery is included. Stratman grew up in Phoenix, Arizona. In 1992 she commenced her studies at Arizona State University majoring in visual arts and art education. Stratman entered academia as a ceramicist. With each passing semester, the scale of her creations expanded and the material limitations of working with clay ultimately led her to the university foundry. This opened a door into another world of creative possibilities, profoundly changing her artistic direction. She replaced fired clay with larger-scale bronze, steel, and mixed media sculptures yet retained a delicacy, intimacy, and intricacy imbued from the ceramic process. Today she is a full-time established artist with studios operating in Phoenix, Arizona and Melbourne, Australia. Her time is divided between the two countries with each location informing and influencing the creative process. She has exhibited in 31 solo exhibitions and over 100 group exhibitions nationally and internationally. Her indoor and outdoor sculptures are held in public and private collections in countries including the United States, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Israel, England, and Europe. Artplex Gallery has been representing and exhibiting Jennyfer Stratman's original artworks in Los Angeles since 2021, presenting her impressive works to an international collector base around the globe. The gallery has been a 1stdibs partner since 2014 with consistently excellent reviews from clients worldwide. The gallery exhibits a well-curated selection of original artworks beyond the ordinary from established and emerging international artists with diverse backgrounds at high standards. Daniel Cherbuin (b. 1971) lives and works in Zürich, Switzerland. At the beginning of commercial television he was the creative force behind Sputnik-TV, an innovative and experimental channel emerging from Zürich’s underground techno scene. Cherbuin’s works are today characterized by highly innovative montages, idiosyncratic alliances of images, as well as an anarchic tenor: with irony, and pastiche Cherbuin is mocking the blasé in pop culture. The titles of the works Being and Nothingness and L’Être et le néant refer to French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre’s key philosophical work Being and Nothingness (1943). Cherbuin’s works feature a beautiful woman slowly blinking while looking at the viewer, which becomes a symbol for solipsism, a theory discussed by Sartre in Being and Nothingness. This theory suggests that only what can be seen exists, and argues that the world would disappear if we wouldn’t see it. The open eyes of the woman, therefore, symbolize being, while her closed eyes represent nothingness. In Cherbuin’s work Theory and Practice, the four-hour didactic DVD How to Look at and Understand Great Art is displayed on the TV screen inside the work. An ornate frame generally used for paintings hangs on top of the TV set. Inside of it, however, is not a painting, but a video in which TV personality Bob Ross...

His artworks exhibit a chemistry of complexity and spontaneity, a lyrical abstraction of frenzied marks, many of which previously lay hidden, buried beneath strong layers of self-taught expression. Those truths, first obscured and then obvious, aim to engage the viewer, allowing them to explore their own interpretation. His figurative abstract artworks are represented by Artspace Warehouse in Los Angeles and have been exhibited and collected worldwide, including London, New York, and Hong Kong. This original oil painting on canvas measures 14 inches high by 11 inches wide. It is wired and ready to hang. The sides of the artwork are painted black and it does not require framing. It is signed by the artist on the front of the artwork and titled on the back. Convenient local Los Angeles area shipping. Affordable U.S. and international shipping also available. A certificate of authenticity issued by Artplex Gallery is included. Mark Acetelli was born in Detroit into an artistic household. Mark’s mother herself was a painter and some of his earliest memories were the smell of turpentine and oil paints. Growing up surrounded by his mother's work, she inspired and encouraged him to become an artist. Acetelli’s paintings are inspired by the intensely personal introspective journey of life, from the ever-changing complexities of love, loss, birth, and death. The context of his work he describes as, “Absence and Presence” pertaining to how someone or something can be physically gone, but the essence still remains. Capturing the physical mixed with spirituality on canvas. His application of paint is an extension of that thought process. He works by continuously building up and tearing down, layer upon layer, adding and subtracting. A visceral dance between the conscious and the unconscious until the emotion is expressed. Acetelli’s paintings may go through multiple incarnations with the past lying just beneath the surface, adding to its overall dimension and depth. In his work, Acetelli seeks to evoke a feeling rather than depict a defined image. He uses primarily oils and encaustics to create thickly layered canvases with emotive bursts of color. Creating a world where imagination and reality come together. Acetelli’s works can be found in many private and corporate collections around the world, including Bill Withers, Lisa Colburn, Colburn School of Music, Raytheon Corp, Universal Studios, Warner Brothers, Michael Jordan, Stuart Beattie, Claire Forlani, Camryn Manheim, and Francine Maisler. Toucan and Parrot Basket, yellow, cream, black, Tribal, Panama, Rainforest The baskets are made by the Wounaan and Embera Indians from the Darien Rainforest in Panama. The Wounaan believe they emerged from the palm tree. They weave baskets from palm fiber and use natural dyes. The dyes are made from wood, plants, and earth. Achieving a particular color takes weeks. The rainforest baskets are of the highest quality to be found anywhere in the world. Comparable to the North American Pomo and Panamint baskets, widely considered the best weavers in the world.
