PREMIATA FONDERIA F.lli DE POLI VITTORIO VENETO
Pair of large decorative vases, 1927

1927

About the Item

AWARDED FOUNDRY F. DE POLI IN VITTORIO VENETO Pair of large decorative vases, 1927 Bronze, height 100 cm One of the two dated "J927" on the base; the other bears the inscription under the border: "PREMIATA FONDERIA F. DE POLI IN VITTORIO VENETO" These two precious and unique bronze specimens are part of the production linked to the Eclectic current, which was developing in Europe between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, when wealthy entrepreneurs, especially foreigners, enchanted by the beauty of the Italian Renaissance historical heritage, they tried to recreate its atmosphere by modernizing it, commissioning the construction of castles and residences characterized by a strong fairy-tale appeal linked to the idealizing virtues of the late medieval and Renaissance world of Knights. Clear examples of this trend can be found in Italy mainly in Genoa, where the Florentine architect Cino Coppedè enjoyed great fame thanks to the initial commission for the construction of the Mackenzie Castle, which took place between 1893 and 1905; another eloquent example is the Castello Bruzzo, also designed by Coppedè in 1904. Founded way back in 1453, it is among the oldest Italian foundries still operating. In its history it has had various ramifications between the various Venice and Udine. The De Poli Foundry, in its laboratory "at the Dai bridge, under the banner of the Madonna" (Calle dei Fabbri) not only cast bells, but also mortars, pestles and guns. In 1481, the De Polis cast a bell for the Cathedral of Ceneda (now Vittorio Veneto) and in 1606 a bell for the Church of San Giusto in Trieste. This artisan workshop continues to be documented in Venice throughout the eighteenth century. In the church of San Giorgio in Basalghelle, the 28-metre-high bell tower, built by the work and direction of a master builder in 1869, houses the three bells of 16,100 quintals of the De Poli foundry. The first is one of the three bells awarded at the 1869 Rome Exposition; that is why it could be saved from the requisition that the Germans made of the bells in 1918. Typical of that period is the use of the "J" instead of the number "1". The pair of vases is characterized by a very refined work of chiselling, which differs in some details from one vase to another, making them absolutely unique pieces. The Eclectic taste, combined with the Liberty current, suggests an important foreign client present in Italy in the 1920s. Shipping must be agreed with the buyer. Any additional fees will be the sole responsibility of the buyer. Presented by Joseph Dasta Antiques Paul Lobel (1899 - 1983): The accomplishments of Paul A. Lobel, industrial designer, metalsmith, sculptor and cartoonist/illustrator, may be viewed as the quintessential American success story. Born in Romania, at the turn of the century, he emigrated to the United States while an infant, and, from humble beginnings on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, grew up to attain a one-man show in Paris in 1925, win two awards at the International Exposition of Decorative Arts in Paris in 1932, be the subject of two exhibitions at the American Museum of Art and The Museum of Modern Art in New York City. He also founded an innovative jewelry and metals studio/shop in New York’s Greenwich Village. Furthermore, his contemporaries regarded him with awe and almost everything he attempted came to fruition. In the summer of 1926 Lobel exhibited 35 works, including drawings, etchings, paintings, metalwork and sculpture, in a one-man show at the Grande Librairie Universelle in Paris. During the next year, he toured London, Rome, Florence, Rotterdam, Brussels and Berlin, then, broke, returned to America where he again rented desk space and tried to resume his advertising career. But he was haunted by the modern design that he had been exposed to in Paris. So, after borrowing money to open a metalwork studio on Lexington Avenue, he sought out architect Eugene Schoen, an enthusiast of modern design, whom he had formerly been introduced to by Boardman Robinson. Schoen was in the process of opening a gallery devoted to showing the work of designers and craftsmen imbued with the spirit of modernism...
