Kerry Louise Bennett, artist and painter, has original artworks available with Wychwood Art in our gallery and online. Working from her home studio in Sheffield, Kerry Louise Bennett (b.1972) makes colourful paintings loaded with texture and pattern. Her previous lives working in set design, upholstery and photography, and her passion for music and literature, all feed into the semi-abstract interior and still life compositions she paints. In one sense the objects painted and the relationships between them can be seen as arbitrary, necessary only to serve a sense of spatial orchestration, and the abstract sensibility of a process-led artist, however, an element of romance and storytelling always seems to emerge in her charming characterful paintings. Colour and composition, strong mark-making and the pure materiality of paint drive my creative practice, but of course everything I make reveals something of me - the introvert, the observer, the dreamer. I work over multiple layers before finding the story the painting wants to tell. In some ways I feel like the conductor of an unruly orchestra - there is a musicality to my work, and my visual vocabulary draws on the everyday to capture a kind of unconscious narrative that transforms chaos into calm, worry into joy, the mundane to the magical. Kerry says of herself: I am obsessed with colour first and foremost – it’s impact is so visceral, but mark making is also important – usually expressed through pattern and the shapes of things often scratched into the surface of the paint, with textures then built up over many layers. Born in Moscow into a family of artists, Sasha Sokolova is an award winning contemporary realist painter, working across a range of traditional oil and water colour techniques. Her current works explore a variety of themes spanning the human figure and nature and feature many of the travel destinations from which she draws much of her inspiration.
Following scholarships from the V. Spivakov fund and Young Talents Fund, Sasha graduated with honours from the Sergey Andriyaki School of Watercolour and Fine Arts in Moscow and went on to complete a Masters of Fine Arts at the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography. Sasha was selected as the only Russian artist to work on the Oscar nominated "Loving Vincent", the first fully painted feature film.

A striking mid-century textural color-field abstract in a bold color palette of royal blue-purple by San Francisco artist Peter Witwer (American, 1928-1968). This highly textured mixed media piece, c.1960's, uses a monochromatic palette that is divided into two areas of varying textural depths. The lower part of the canvas verges on sculptural, as the textured surface becomes almost three-dimensional and haunting forms emerge from the abstract purple-blue plane.

Provenance: Without a will and a family that had little interest in his art, nearly all of his possessions and close to 100 paintings were turned over to SF’s Conservators Office. His friend, Albert Richard Lasker, purchased all of Peter’s possessions (including the art) and has taken care of them until this day, always sensing there was something remarkable about the collection. Wanting Peter’s work to finally be seen, Richard came to Lost Art Salon with Peter’s story after reading about the new gallery in a July, 2005 issue of the SF Chronicle.

Binyamin Basteker was born in Mumbai in 1953. Growing up in a family of artists, his unique talent was discovered at a very early age. He perfected the art of portraiture and color while still living in India. Following his immigration to Israel in 1969, he studied with the modern Israeli masters and was considered to be one of the promising young abstract artists of the 1980s. The artist’s inaugural solo exhibition of oil paintings entitled “Stones that Speak” set Basteker apart from the mainstream of “modern” Jewish, religious painters. Whereas in many instances the theme of the painting, whether it be the Kotel or Jerusalem or the wealth of themes available to the observant artist, becomes the goal of the artist, Basteker relates to the “theme” as the “excuse” for the painting. Basteker searches for balance and harmony in his life and translates this to color and texture and motion. Nothing is his work is arbitrary. Every stroke and splash, every line and curve contribute to the perfect composition.
The artist’s selection of tools, a result of an immediate inspiration, greatly affects the application of the color and texture. His works are sophisticated and worthy of deep examination. Tremendous layers of thought and spirituality are engraved in each and every work. Yet to the casual viewer, the paintings are aesthetically pleasing on a very simplistic level. On first glance, we see a beautiful bouquet or garden. Yet as the viewer’s eye travels and dissects the composition, we might imagine a maestro conducting a symphony orchestra or a pianist’s graceful fingers dancing over the keyboard.
