The Young Art Critics - Scottish Edwardian art portrait landscape oil painting
Located in London, GB
This lovely Edwardian exhibited portrait landscape oil painting is by noted Scottish artist James Riddel. It was exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1909 and again in Glasgow Institute in 1913, entitled The Critics. Painted circa 1909, the painting has the muted tones but varied palette of the Scottish School. The focus of the composition is a young boy and girl stood in the foreground, outdoors, examining a painting in progress on an easel. They look as if they are giving it very careful consideration. The artist's bag, brushes and tubes of paint lie on the grass beneath the easel but he is not in view. The painting is of the countryside and path leading to a collection of dwellings beyond, all bathed in sunshine. The earnestness of the young art critics can be seen in their body language and is very sweet. A really lovely exhibited Scottish Impressionist Edwardian oil painting and an excellent example of Riddel's work. Signed lower right. Provenance. Exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy 1909 no. 294, entitled The Critics. Exhibited at the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts 1913 no. 420 entitled The Critics. He attended the Ontario College of Art from 1952 to 1956, and worked for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) as a graphic designer until 1960. Inspired by a 1955 exhibition of the “Painters Eleven” at Toronto’s Hart House, as well as American Abstract Expressionist artists such as Robert Motherwell, Jack Tworkov, and Willem de Kooning, Burton shifted his focus toward abstraction in the mid-1950s. Burton showed with the famed Isaacs Gallery in Toronto, becoming one of the youngest members on the gallery’s roster. A talented musician, he also played saxophone in the Artist’s Jazz Band in Toronto - a pioneering Canadian free-jazz group...

Henry Wallace Methven "Impressionist Landscape" Water, Trees Summer Reflection
Located in Detroit, MI
Impressionist Landscape" is an exquisitely peaceful late summer scene along the banks of a quiet river. The dappling yellow and green leaves and the spots of blue sky give the perfect impressionistic feel to the scene. Impressionism was a style or movement in painting originating in France in the 1860s, characterized by a concern with depicting the visual impression of the moment, especially in terms of the shifting effect of light and color. Methven captured this impression perfectly. It is as fresh today as when it was painted in 1902 so much so that you can almost hear the rustle of the leaves and see the shifting light. The gold gilt frame is original to the piece. Without the frame the piece measures 20 h x 16 w. It is signed by the artist. Methven was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In the 1930's he moved to Chicago, Illinois, where he painted with other area Chicago artists and showed at The Art Institute of Chicago. He spent his summers in Benton Harbor, Michigan, along Lake Michigan. He is known for his landscapes and water scenes. Michigan has numerous rivers, creeks and small lakes and Methven would have had a wealth of scenes to draw upon for his numerous oil paintings. He studied under Henry Fenton Spread who taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and later founded Spread's Art Academy. In 1902, this academy became the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. Spread was named the first president of the Chicago Society of Artists in 1889. Known primarily as a portraitist, Spread also painted landscape and genre scenes. Although a skilled artist, he did not exhibit widely; his primary legacy being fostering a love of art in Chicago. Fellow artist (and former student of Spread), Ralph Clarkson, the noted Chicago society portrait painter, stated that Spread' s "fine and advice formed the careers of the men who were not only to achieve prominence as artists, but to occupy leading places as art teachers". Harry Wallace Methven...

Portrait of Hope G. Simpson - British 1952 art female portrait oil painting
Located in London, GB
This superb British realist portrait oil painting is by noted artist Gerald Leslie Brockhurst. It was painted in 1952 when Brockhurst was in his sixties and living in America since 1939. The sitter is Hope G. Simpson. The painting is a half length portrait of a striking blonde woman in a blue buttoned up Chinese style garment. It is a strong portrait with bold colours and confident brushwork and an excellent example of his work. Signed and dated 1952 lower right. Provenance. Hiram Hoelzer New York label verso. Portraits Inc. East Street new York. Label verso. Condition. Oil on canvas, 30 inches by 25 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in its original wooded frame, 37 inches by 32 inches and in good condition. Gerald Leslie Brockhurst (1890-1978) was a British painter and etcher. Brockhurst was born in the Edgbaston district of Birmingham on 31 October 1890, son of a coal merchant called Arthur Brockhurst, he soon showed precocious drawing skills and entered the Birmingham School of Art at the age of twelve. A pupil at the Royal Academy Schools in 1907, he won the gold medal and a travelling scholarship in 1913, enabling him to visit both France and Italy. This led to a closer study of such 15th-century artists as Piero della Francesca, Botticelli and Leonardo da Vinci, whose work had an abiding influence on him. In 1914 he married for the first time to a Frenchwoman, Anaïs Folin, whom he used as the model for most of his early etchings of young womanhood (especially from 1920 till 1934). From 1915 to 1919 Brockhurst and his wife Anaïs lived in Ireland, where they were friendly with the artist Augustus John and his circle. Though he tried his hand at etching in 1914, it was not until 1920 that he began his career as an etcher in earnest, eventually achieving success as both a printmaker and society portraitist. Brockhurst held his first important exhibition in 1919, in London, and after it was well received returned to live there. In 1921 he was one of the early members of the newly-formed Society of Graphic Art and exhibited with them. Throughout the 1930s he continued an increasingly successful career as a portrait artist, with notable sitters including the film stars Merle Oberon and Marlene Dietrich, as well as the Duchess of Windsor, whose husband commissioned her portrait. In 1937 Brockhurst was elected to the Royal Academy and was able to command a price of 1,000 guineas for a portrait. In the same year however details of his relationship with his young model Kathleen Woodward, whom he had renamed Dorette, were made public after she gave an interview to the Sunday Express. Brockhurst's marriage had previously come under strain in 1922 when his wife discovered his adultery with her sister, Marguerite, and now broke down acrimoniously, with Brockhurst counter-suing on the grounds of his wife's adultery. In August 1939 Brockhurst and Dorette moved to the United States, and he was eventually divorced from his first wife in 1940. He married Kathleen in 1947. In New York City, Brockhurst became both famous and rich with a series of society portraits but his printmaking output diminished, especially his etchings. He produced a few lithographs at the end of his career (around 1945). In 1951, he was elected into the National Academy of Design as an Associate member. In 1958, he appeared as a guest challenger on the TV panel...

On the Path
Located in London, GB
'On the Path', pastel and ink on art paper, by Suzanne Tourte (circa 1950s). Executed with a lively palette of colour, this is a surprisingly sophisticated modern work of art which belies its rather naive style. Flowered fields, green grassy patches, a curved path and blue skies all figure in this engaging landscape with two figures. Newly framed and glazed in anti-reflective glass, this work is in good overall condition. Signed: 'S X Tourte' in the lower right hand. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying the listing. Upon request, a video may be provided. About the Artist: Suzanne Tourte (1904-1979) was a French painter, engraver, medalist, fresco artist, lithographer and illustrator. She was also an excellent vocalist. She studied at the school of Beaux-Arts in Reims while continuing her musical studies at the Conservatoire de la Ville. She chose painting as a profession and returned to Paris to continue her studies. She was friends with artists Yves Brayer and Robert Humblot...

Lilac flowers at the door, 1901 uplifting floral still life large oil on canvas
Located in Norwich, GB
Here is a painting that will lift you - one feels happy every time one looks at it. It is such a lovely, unusual twist to the theme of the floral still life: here we have flowers, not in a vase, but attached to a wooden front door. I wonder if the artist did this with actual flowers, perhaps for a sweetheart, and then decided to paint the scene? At any rate: who wouldn't want to come home to find a large bunch of glorious lilac as they come home? The artist is Emile Baudoux (1850 -1929), who studied with Humbert and Cabanel. Paris-born, he liked to work in Normandy, where he had his studio. He exhibited his work at the "Salon des Artistes Français" until 1927, where he obtained a gold medal in 1910. The important oil on canvas presented here, dating from 1901, may have been shown at the Salon, as it bears an exhibition number "30" at the upper right of the canvas. Measuring 81 x 60 cm, the overall size including its original large oak frame...

Thanks to the Virgen of San Juan, Ex-Voto, Retablo, Painting on Metal, Mexico
Located in Houston, TX
This retablo was purchased by the gallery in Mexico City. I knew the family that sold the retablo to me. It is dated 1853 because the story on the retablo was passed down for generations and a relative of Lourdes painted it in her memory. The description on the ex-voto reads: "Thanks to the Virgen of San Juan de los Lagos that I have a new job with my new bosses. That they like my food and they don't mind what I prepare for them. " It is in excellent condition. It is framed behind conservatorship glass. The framed size is 14" x 15". The class should only be cleaned with ammonia free cleaner. An ex-voto is a votive offering to a saint or to a divinity; the term is usually restricted to Christian examples. It is given in fulfillment of a vow (hence the Latin term, short for ex voto suscepto, "from the vow made") or in gratitude or devotion. Ex-votos are placed in a church or chapel where the worshiper seeks grace or wishes to give thanks. The destinations of pilgrimages often include shrines decorated with ex-votos. Ex-votos can take a wide variety of forms. They are not only intended for the helping figure, but also as a testimony to later visitors of the received help. As such they may include texts explaining a miracle attributed to the helper, or symbols such as a painted or modeled reproduction of a miraculously healed body part, or a directly related item such as a crutch given by a person formerly lame. There are places where a very old tradition of depositing ex-votos existed, such as Abydos in ancient Egypt. Especially in the Latin world, there is a tradition of votive paintings...

Clearing the Snow, Saturday Evening Post Cover
Located in Fort Washington, PA
Cover of The Saturday Evening Post Magazine, February 6, 1960 Caption: "The Cover: Artist John Clymer takes you to the summit of Washington state's Snoqualimie Pass, where they seem to have had a few snow flurries lately. Up there the moist westerly winds bump against sky-reaching peaks of the Cascade Range, with the result that the winds spill their contents before whistling dryly on down across the eastern slopes. Thus residents of places like Seattle living in a relatively balmy clime beside the Pacific's mild Japan current, can drive in an hour or two up to where skiing material is sometimes twenty feet thick if it's an inch. Indeed, when seasons overlap, a downlander might conceivably pick a rose and go skiing with it in his buttonhole. All of which, thanks to highway crews who blow off the blizzards, is a very felicitous geographic arrangement." John Ford Clymer's success as an artist can be traced to his boyhood in the Kittitas Valley located in the central regions of Washington state. It was there that he developed an enthusiasm for the world around him and an abiding respect for historical accuracy. Over the years John Clymer received numerous awards and honors including the revered Prix de West in 1976, from the national Academy of Western Art. Other great achievements included both gold and silver metals for his oils and charcoal drawings from the Cowboy Artists of America, "Western Artist of the Year" from the National Wildlife Art Collectors Society, and both John and Doris were honored at the Ellensburg National Art Show and Auction for their contributions to western heritage. John's highest honor came in 1988 when he was awarded the prestigious Rungius Medal from the Wildlife of American West Art...

“Sunset Topeka, Kansas”
Located in Southampton, NY
Very well executed oil on masonite painting of a sunset in Topeka, Kansas by the American artist, Pauline Haynes Shirer. Signed lower right. Circa 1950. Condition is excellent. Recently professionally cleaned. Newly framed in a custom gallery frame. Overall framed measurements are 17.5 by 20.5 inches. Provenance: A Long Island, New York collector. Pauline Haynes Shirer (1894 - 1975), American Born in Topeka in 1894, Pauline is said to have been at least partially raised by her aunt, Hannah Haynes Headlee (Pauline’s mother died when she was 8 years old). By 16, she was living as a ward in the Topeka home of Elizabeth Cunningham, a dressmaker. After graduating from Topeka High School, she attended the New York School of Fine and Applied Art (later Parsons School of Design), completing a two-year course in one year (1913-1914). At the same time, she took weekend classes at the Art Students League. Returning to Topeka, she studied and taught at Washburn College (now University) from 1914 to 1915 and instructed summer sessions at Kansas State Teachers College, Pittsburgh, during the same period. Afterward, she returned to the New York School of Fine and Applied Art, where she taught and took classes (1915-1918). She spent the summer of 1916 as an instructor at the Skidmore School of Art, Saratoga Springs, New York. In 1917, Pauline married Hampton F. Shirer, an architect from MIT, who was also an artist and came from a prominent Topeka family. The couple later settled in Wellesley, Massachusetts in 1921, living in a house which they built and decorated themselves. During the next 16 years, they raised two children and Pauline also found time to illustrate promotional brochures and primary school texts. During the early years of her career, Pauline focused on the applied arts – such as watercolor designs for curtains, silk fabrics, wallpaper as well as poster designs, theater backdrops and book covers. Later she would transition into creating her own representational works of art. Shirer returned to Topeka in 1937. During her career as a painter in oils and watercolors, she sketched in Europe four times and did paintings of New England subjects. However, most of her paintings were of the West. She executed Kansas views first, and they continued to hold her interest throughout her life. Typical were her studies of rustic buildings on the plains, glimpses of the prairie country, and the historic buildings of Topeka. She also painted New Mexico landscapes and Colorado mountain scenes. Among her exhibitions, mostly solo but occasionally with her husband, were those held at the Harlow and Harland’s Gallery, Boston (1922); The Scattery, Wellesley, MA (1925); Vose Galleries, Boston (1931); Topeka Art Guild (1952); Copley Society...

Painting is an art form that has spanned innumerable cultures, with artists using the medium to tell stories, explore and communicate ideas and express themselves. To bring abstract paintings, landscape paintings, still-life paintings and other original paintings into your home is to celebrate and share in the long tradition of this discipline.

When we look at paintings, particularly those that originated in the past, we learn about history, other cultures and countries of the world. Like every other work of art, paintings — whether they are contemporary creations or works that were made during the 19th century — can often help us clearly see and understand the world around us in a meaningful and interesting way.

Cave walls were the canvases for what were arguably the world’s first landscape paintings, which depict natural scenery through art. Portrait paintings and drawings, which, along with sculpture, were how someone’s appearance was recorded prior to the advent of photography, are at least as old as Ancient Egypt. In the Netherlands, landscapes were a major theme for painters as early as the 1500s. Later, artists in Greece, Rome and elsewhere created vast wall paintings to decorate stately homes, churches and tombs.

Today, creating a wall of art is a wonderful way to enhance your space, showcase beautiful pieces and tie an interior design together.

No matter your preference, whether you favor Post-Impressionist paintings, animal paintings, Surrealism, Pop art or another movement or specific period, arranging art on a blank wall allows you to evoke emotions in a room while also showing off your tastes and interests. A symmetrical wall arrangement may comprise a grid of four to six pieces or, for an odd number of works, a horizontal row. Asymmetrical arrangements, which may be small clusters of art or large, salon-style gallery walls, have a more collected and eclectic feel.

Download the 1stDibs app, which includes a handy “View on Wall” feature that allows you to see how a particular artwork will look on a particular wall, and read about how to arrange wall art. And if you’re searching for the perfect palette for your interior design project, what better place to turn than to the art world’s masters of color

On 1stDibs, you’ll find an expansive collection of paintings and other fine art for your home or office. Browse abstract paintings, portrait paintings, paintings by emerging artists and more today.
