JOSEPH STABILITOS work is in many public and private collections in New York, the United States, and Europe. As well, his work can be seen in the upcoming Batman movie being released 2015. Stabilito first displayed his large scale paintings in the windows of Bonwitt Teller, an upscale ladies department store in Philadelphia. That was followed with the first solo exhibition of his work at the Sande Webster Gallery in 1982. He moved to New York the following year, as his paintings were being featured in the windows of Bloomingdales. That made a particular splash, attracting a fan base of notable designers and collectors to his work. Saks Fifth Avenue and Paul Smith prominently put his colorful paintings in their own windows. Stabilito settled into the burgeoning East Village Graffiti art scene, while having gallery shows in Italy, Germany, and across the United States. His work was shown at the prestigious Navy Pier Show in Chicago, and the very first Miami Art Fair. Modernist beach scene; signed lower right; image size is 11.5 x 8.5 inches, framed it measures Ruth Gikow (January 6, 1915 Ukraine - 1982 New York City) was an Important American Jewish woman visual artist known primarily for her work as a genre painter. Her paintings often depict human figures interacting with an urban environment. Ruth Gikow was born in 1915 in the Ukraine. Her father, Boris, was a photographer and her mother was named Lena. In 1920 she emigrated to New York City due to civil war and pogroms against the Jewish community. The pilgrimage took around two years. Once in New York City, the Gikow family found themselves in poverty, rather than the middle-class comfort they enjoyed in Ukraine. Ruth Gikow's skill was prominent even in youth, as she excelled in drawing in elementary school and entered Washington Irving High School at age thirteen in which she furthered her art prowess. Later, she studied at the Cooper Union Art School, where she studied under school director Austin Purvis, Jr. and regional artist John Steuart Curry. In her second year of Art School, she was awarded a scholarship which she used to work with fellow painter Raphael Soyer. She joined the New York City WPA Federal Art Project in 1935, where she was allowed to dedicate herself to her artwork full-time. In 1939, inspired by the muralists Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco, she applied and later won a commission to paint murals for Bronx Hospital, Rockefeller Center and the New York World's Fair. After the events of Pearl Harbor and once the Federal Arts Project was abandoned, Gikow's murals were sought after by New York department stores wishing to commission wall paintings. Gikow became disillusioned with mural painting due to the commercial aspect of these commissions. With other associates, she founded the American Serigraph Society (along with Anthony Velonis, Lena Gurr, Robert Gwathmey, Leonard Pytlak, Harry Shoulberg, Russell Twiggs...

This piece came from the collection of the Bezalel Art Gallery on the Lower East Side of New York City. Emmanuil Snitkovsky is an internationally known artist, sculpture and poet. Emmanuil Snitkovsky was born into a family of artists and scholars from the Odessa Art College in Russia. Immersed in the traditions of Russia art, he approaches form, line, space and color with relentless vision and impeccable technique. Two highly successful artists, the husband and wife team of Emmanuil and Janet Snitkovsky have exhibited a selection of eight large Judaic paintings at the Chabad Chassidic Art Institute (Chai Gallery) in Crown Heights. Three of those paintings are truly singular visions of Jewish Art that cause us to stop and reassess our preconceptions about the meaning and importance of their subjects. Emmanuil and Janet Snitkovsky were both born in the Ukraine in the 1930′s. Emmanuil was trained in Odessa in public monument art, and Janet majored in fashion at the Lvov Decorative Art Institute. After both narrowly survived the devastation of the Second World War in Stalin’s Russia, they began to collaborate on state sponsored art works in 1962. For ten years, they worked on grandiose public sculptural projects to commemorate the fallen Russian heroes of the Second World War in Moscow, Kiev, Tula and Kazan. They were exemplary Soviet Realists working for the Soviet regime. Eventually, this career became untenable for them, both as artists and as Jews, when they clashed with Soviet officialdom over a commission to commemorate the Babi-Yar massacre. The Soviets refused to acknowledge this massacre of 100,000 Jews and eventually suppressed the memorial. In 1978, Emmanuil and Janet arrived in New York and began to recreate their artistic lives. In the ensuing 25 years, they have been quite successful, exhibiting widely in the United States and Europe. They have nurtured a hybrid style of painting and sculpture called “Renaissance Revival” combining contemporary and classical subjects in a stylized realism that evokes both the American regionalist Thomas Hart Benton and the Italian Renaissance master Sandro Botticelli. The works are highly proficient, polished, and commercial productions in a quirky decorative style. They have continued to accept sculptural projects that have not shied away from kitschy realistic sculptures of Charlie Chaplin as “The Kid,” The Little Tramp” and Buster Keaton as “Cameramen.” In some ways, they have appropriated American culture just as they once accepted Soviet culture. Janet, a graduate of the Lvov College, was invited- by virtue of the high honors she achieved there- to matriculate at the Lvov University of Art. Such an opportunity is extremely rare for anyone, particularly for someone of Jewish descent. Their works of art are included in collections of the Japanese Imperial Family...

The following is written and submitted by Joseph Dolice, Exhibition Director of the New Rochelle Council on the Arts. This information accompanied the exhibition, "Alton Tobey," of the New Rochelle Council on the Arts October 22 to November 14, 2003. Millions of Americans have seen reproductions of the art of Alton Tobey, one of the most famous of today's living illustrators -- in national magazines such as Life, Reader's Digest and American Artist; and in public murals such as at The Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC, the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City; and in Westchester where his Roots of Westchester mural is installed at the White Plains County Courthouse. Few people, however, had had the opportunity to see almost three dozen of his original paintings, including many of his portraits of famous people, at any single time or place before in history. From October 22nd through November 14th, 2003 The New Rochelle Council on The Arts, a major cultural resource for the citizens of New Rochelle and the residents of the surrounding Westchester community will present a special one-man exhibition of thirty-three of Alton Tobey's original paintings, many of which have never been publicly shown before. The show will be held in the 3000 square foot Lumen Winter Gallery in the lobby of The New Rochelle Library, the site of many major exhibitions in the past by the NRCA, such as its show of original artwork of Norman Rockwell and of Frederic Remington. Both of these artists also achieved fame mainly as illustrative painters, and had ties to the community. Alton Tobey was born in Middletown, Connecticut and received his BFA and MFA at the Yale School of Fine Arts and later taught there for four years. He has also taught at the City College of New York and has been juror for many prestigious art competitions. His work is in over 30 museums and in important government, corporate and private art collections. He has had over 50 one-man exhibitions.
