He was a figure and animal painter who was based originally in Bradford, where he lived until 1885, when he moved to Edwinstowe, near Mansfield, Nottingham. In 1901 he moved to Hampstead and then back north to Harrogate where he stayed until his death. In his later years he became a picture dealer, but in his will he referred to himself as ‘animal painter’.

Francesco Guardi was an Italian painter of veduta, nobleman, and a member of the Venetian School.
He was born in Venice in 1712, the son of a minor painter, Domenico Guardi, and went on to become, after Canaletto, the main painter of views of Venice in the mid-18th century.
His early figurative paintings were carried out in association with his brother, Gian Antonio, but in about 1760 Guardi turned to view painting, recording both the architecture of the city and the celebrations of its inhabitants in interior and exterior scenes. These works brought him great success. The earliest of these show the influence of Canaletto, but he gradually adopted a looser style characterized by spirited brush-strokes and freely imagined architecture.

Spofford Alley in San Francisco's Chinatown is best known for an address (number 36) where Dr. Sun Yat-Sen plotted the overthrow of China's last dynasty. During Prohibition, it was the site of turf battles over local bootlegging and protection rackets. Today it is lined with seniors' community centres. However, the quiet alley livens up in the evenings when a Chinese orchestra strikes up a tune, mah-jongg games begin with a cascade of clicking tiles, and barbers and florists use the pretence of sweeping their doorsteps to gossip. In this artist's depiction, a man smokes a long-stemmed Chinese pipe under the awning and colourful lanterns hanging from the wooden supports while a child looks on. The artwork is interesting from several standpoints including architectural, cultural and historical. Shortly after this work was painted, the neighbourhood was completely destroyed in the 1906 earthquake that levelled most of the city. LITERATURE
Visita con el cardenal combines the two most salient characteristics of Sánchez-Barbudo's work: the search for novelty of theme and narrative content, and the use of minutely detailed brushwork and luminosity. Sánchez-Barbudo specialised in elaborate 'costume pictures', delighting the viewer with impressive details finely rendered with dazzling technical virtuosity.
Here, Sánchez-Barbudo depicts a well-to-do bourgeois family receiving a cardinal in their home. The interior, sumptuously furnished in the rococo style, along with the rich costumes and fabrics, are beautifully observed. Yet beyond the high technique lavished upon the composition, the treatment is comic and full of character and suffused with a gently satirising anti-clericalism.
The cardinal, far from getting the attention he expects, is, literally, sidelined, his expression and body language showing his pique. There is no doubt that contemporary collectors and spectators took pleasure in the sight of noble self-respecting figureheads of the church being brought back down to earth. The comedy was appealing, and the message suited the prevailing political mood of an increasingly secular middle-class buying public.
Salvador Sánchez Barbudo was born on March 14, 1857 in Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz). He was one of the most important Spanish artists of the "casacón" genre, who followed the Fortuny tradition in Rome. Here is a painting that will lift you - one feels happy every time one looks at it.
It is such a lovely, unusual twist to the theme of the floral still life: here we have flowers, not in a vase, but attached to a wooden front door. I wonder if the artist did this with actual flowers, perhaps for a sweetheart, and then decided to paint the scene?
At any rate: who wouldn't want to come home to find a large bunch of glorious lilac as they come home?
The artist is Emile Baudoux (1850 -1929), who studied with Humbert and Cabanel. Paris-born, he liked to work in Normandy, where he had his studio. He exhibited his work at the "Salon des Artistes Français" until 1927, where he obtained a gold medal in 1910.
The important oil on canvas presented here, dating from 1901, may have been shown at the Salon, as it bears an exhibition number "30" at the upper right of the canvas.

The Young Art Critics - Scottish Edwardian art portrait landscape oil painting

This lovely Edwardian exhibited portrait landscape oil painting is by noted Scottish artist James Riddel. It was exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1909 and again in Glasgow Institute in 1913, entitled The Critics. Painted circa 1909, the painting has the muted tones but varied palette of the Scottish School. The focus of the composition is a young boy and girl stood in the foreground, outdoors, examining a painting in progress on an easel. They look as if they are giving it very careful consideration. The artist's bag, brushes and tubes of paint lie on the grass beneath the easel but he is not in view. The painting is of the countryside and path leading to a collection of dwellings beyond, all bathed in sunshine. The earnestness of the young art critics can be seen in their body language and is very sweet. A really lovely exhibited Scottish Impressionist Edwardian oil painting and an excellent example of Riddel's work.

George Stubbs (1724-1806) was classified in his lifetime as a sporting painter, and as such was excluded from full membership of the Royal Academy. He is best remembered for his paintings of horses and his conversation pieces. Having studied anatomy, Stubbs's pictures of horses are among the most accurate ever painted.
