About the Item
Anita Johnson
Untitled (Still Life with Pitcher and Basket of Fruit), c. 1950s
Oil on canvas
Framed dimensions: 30 in. H × 27 in. W
Original vintage frame in silver gilt
In Still Life with Pitcher and Basket of Fruit, Anita Johnson explores the dynamism of everyday forms through a Fauvist-inflected lens, transforming domestic subject matter into a theater of color, shape, and light. A white pitcher anchors the composition, surrounded by a patchwork of reflective ceramics, a vivid cubist-style fruit basket, and a twisting spray of branches rendered in expressive, painterly strokes.
The palette pulses with ochre, olive, crimson, and plum, evoking both the intensity of early modernist experimentation and the warmth of lived-in interiors. Johnson’s sophisticated spatial treatment—slanted tabletops, overlapping shadows, angled vessels—suggests an interest in the lessons of Cézanne, while her gestural freedom and emotive brushwork place the piece firmly in the American postwar canon.
This painting marks a key moment in Johnson’s early evolution as a colorist and form-builder, bridging figuration and abstraction. The work is signed with her maiden name.
Presented in its original period frame, the piece carries both charm and gravitas—a museum-quality work that rewards close viewing and thoughtful placement.

Spirit
By William Y. Cooper
Located in Buffalo, NY
"Spirit" a bold and thoughtful cubist oil on canvas was painted in December of 2001 by African American artist William (Bill) Cooper.
William Y. Cooper was a writer, painter, muralist, illustrator, and art teacher. He moved to Western New York in 1954 from Birmingham, Alabama, to pursue work, and Buffalo has been his home ever since. In 1975, he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University at Buffalo; he was also a state certified art teacher.
Cooper woked primarily in oils and acrylics, but also creates drawings on paper. He has painted several commissioned murals and has had more than fifteen one-man shows in Western New York and Ghana, West Africa, and has participated in more than twenty-five group exhibitions since he began his professional career in 1969.
His paintings and drawings address both his African heritage and his experience as an American through symbolism and metaphor. He observes, “I am an Afrocentric artist. My worldview is rooted in an African frame of reference and a deep, abiding sense of the creator from whence I draw my inspiration, strength, and a sense of who I am. The use of symbols allows me to explore literal ideas.”
Among Cooper’s published works are two children’s books, 77 Jackson Street, Rear and Nakai and the Red Shoes, and a novel for adults, The Mopane Tree.
Cooper founded the Afrocentric Artists’ Collective and ran the organization from 1979 to 1981. In 2013 he was designated a “Living Legacy” artist by the Burchfield Penney Arts Center, the latest in a series of honors which has also included awards from the Arts Council of Buffalo & Erie County, the New York State Council on the Arts, and Alpha Kappa Alpha...

Paysage de la Cote d'Azur
65 x 54 cm
Oil and Acrylic on Canvas
Paysage de la Côte d'Azur is a vibrant tribute to the sunny allure of the French Riviera, interpreted through Diachronic Cubism. This piece captures the energy of the Côte d'Azur with its fragmented yet harmonious composition.
Rich yellows, deep blues, and bright reds evoke the Mediterranean sun, sea, and architecture, while angular shapes and layered perspectives bring movement and depth. A small figure and sailboats add a narrative touch, inviting the viewer to explore the scene from multiple viewpoints. Mathias masterfully merges cubist abstraction with a lively depiction of this iconic region.
Perfect For:
Collectors of Mediterranean landscapes, amateurs of cubist art, and those drawn to the vibrant charm of the Côte d'Azur. Paysage de la Côte d'Azur is an exquisite addition to any collection, infusing any space with color and modernity.
