A striking example of Bunnell’s transition into Abstract Expressionism, this atmospheric cityscape radiates movement and energy. Framed in a custom black frame, the piece measures 30 ¼ x 12 ¼ x ¾ inches on the outside, while the image itself is 30 x 12 ¼ inches. The painting comes directly from the estate of the artist, ensuring its authenticity and provenance. About the Artist – Charles Ragland Bunnell (1897–1968) A pioneer of American Abstract Expressionism, Charles Bunnell began his artistic journey in Kansas City before moving to Colorado Springs, where he trained at the Broadmoor Art Academy. Over his decades-long career, he evolved from American Scene painting to pioneering abstraction, particularly in his "Black and Blue" series and post-war Surrealist works. His art was deeply influenced by his experiences in World War I, his mentorship under Boardman Robinson, and his exposure to the New York art scene. Bunnell’s work was exhibited at prestigious institutions such as the Carnegie Institute, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Denver Art Museum, with solo exhibitions at the Kansas City Art Institute in 1930, the Santa Fe Museum in 1947, and The Bodley Gallery in New York in 1955. His group exhibitions include major showcases like the 1947 Art Institute of Chicago exhibition, the First Provincetown Festival in 1958, and several regional art fairs and museums across the U.S. Why Collect This Piece? This original oil painting is a rare opportunity to own a mid-century abstract cityscape by a celebrated American artist.
