1960s Mid Century Modern Abstract Acrylic on Canvas Painting, Black Blue Green
Located in Denver, CO
Original acrylic on canvas painting signed by artist Angelo Di Benedetto (1913-1992) from 1964. Painting features an abstract composition depicting a large circle encompassing smaller circles in blue, green, white, and black. Signed and dated by the artist in the lower right corner of the canvas. Image size measures 50 x 49 3⁄4 inches. Framed image size measures 50 3⁄4 x 50 1⁄2 x 1 1⁄4 inches. About the Artist: Born New Jersey 1913 Died Central City, CO 1992 The son of Italian immigrants from the Salerno province in southern Italy, as a teenager Di Benedetto worked to study at the Cooper Union Art School in New York City (1930-34) from which he graduated with a certificate in freehand drawing. He won a scholarship to the Boston Museum Art School where he studied for three years, beginning in 1934. In 1937, he entered his first juried exhibition at the Montclair Museum in New Jersey, winning first prize and first honorable mention. In December 1938, the Royal Netherlands Steamship Line sent him on a two-month ethnological study trip to Haiti, his first exposure to a different environment outside the United States. In 1940, his Haitian paintings were exhibited at the Montross Gallery in New York – his first solo show. Before World War II, Di Benedetto traveled extensively around the United States doing regional paintings. During the war in 1941, Di Benedetto volunteered for a secret mission based in Eritrea, Africa before the Allied invasion. Following Africa, he served as an orientation officer and aerial photographic officer in the District of Columbia. In 1945 he was assigned to a mapping unit at Buckley Airfield in Denver where he served until his discharge in 1946. Like many other servicemen stationed at the time in Colorado, Di Benedetto chose to remain in Colorado, impressed by the state’s physical grandeur and healthful climate. He settled in the old mining town of Central City in 1947. In 1949 Di Benedetto and his wife, ceramist Lee Porzio, opened the Benpro Art School in his studio where he conducted summer art classes. In 1950, Di Benedetto teamed up with Frank Vavra...

Caught In A Web
Located in Miami, FL
Vintage comic books and mixed media on panel Paul Ecke is a mid-career painter of contemporary non-figurative and figurative works on canvas and panel. His works are an amalgam of color, texture, and movement achieved through the application of oil and acrylic paints to canvas, all applied by brush, hand, and even trowel. The results are magnificent, colorful, thought and emotion-provoking images that convey the inner strength, conviction, and complexity of the artist. Paul Ecke was educated at California State University, Fullerton, receiving degrees in art with an emphasis in ceramic arts and painting. His classical training taught him to represent the human form. His skill as a ceramicist affects his paintings, giving them a three-dimensional quality through the application of textural media to his works on canvas. Ecke with his newest series “Comic Strip” can be described as a means of creating laughter and nostalgia. The collection is intended to engage the viewer in conversation. The heroes and villains in the different comic strips create magical fantasies that are rhetorical exaggerations. For decades, scholars have been making the connection between the design of the superhero story and the mythology of the ancient folktale. The comics become epic storytelling. The artist has created works of art that are a combination of vintage comic collaging, texture, and paint. Ecke's works are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Manila, Philippines and the Daytona Florida Museum of Arts and Science. He has shown in galleries in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Diego, Palm Springs, Florida, the Philippines and Bali, Indonesia. His works are in many private and corporate collections including those of Universal Studios, Jimmy Z Sportswear, Taco Bell, Flojet Corporation, Carsey Warner Productions and Dionne Warwick...

Located in Baltimore, MD
"My art practice crosses three continents over two decades. The works consider the images and ideas that mark my journey into the spiritual and cultural dimensions of painting as a creative activity. During a period when I have carried adventurous journeys across several different social and geographic divides, I began to search deeper for an understanding of who I am, and where I am. My paintings started to explore the idea of self as the most fundamental element of human nature; I tried to seek my identity as I examined human nature." Huge 8' California Minimalist Abstract Expressionist LA Color Field Oil Painting
Located in Surfside, FL
Large painting titled Edge on Center; signed verso and dated 2002 8 feet x 5 feet (approx.) Peter Lodato was born in 1946 in Los Angeles, California, has exhibited extensively and received significant acclaim throughout his art career. During the 1960’s and 1970’s, his art consisted of environmental works utilizing space, powerful lights, mirrors, shadows and reflections. Soon after, Lodato realized he could make a similar statement by replacing the reflected light and shadow images with paint applied directly to the walls in large flat and glossy panels of color and black and white. These works were exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (1972), PS1 in New York City (1978), the Whitney Biennial (1981), and the La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art (1985). More recently, Lodato’s work has consisted of abstract paintings and works on paper that have the same perceptual quality as his early light and space installations. Lodato’s simple compositions are concerned with positive and negative space, and the pitting of shapes against edges and margins. He mixes geometric abstraction, in the vein of Ellsworth Kelly, with investigations of defined luminosity, similar to Mark Rothko. Lodato’s reductive, divided compositions are visual confrontations between the planar simplicity of form and the resonance of particular pigments. A disciple of the Abstract Expressionist color field painter, Barnett Newman, Lodato’s sumptuously colored canvases echo Newman’s concept of using division as a way to merge different areas of the canvas into a sublime whole. The Frederick Weisman Foundation curated an extensive solo retrospective of Lodato’s work in 2000 and his work has been exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. He was also included in Black & White & In Between: Contemporary Art from the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation. Artists included: Lita Albuquerque...

Located in Detroit, MI
"Nightscape" was painted in 1960 by the African-American artist, Merton Simpson. It is a mixture of deep blues and black with what may be a white moon whose reflection in the lower half of the painting literally causes the painting to glow. Simpson became the first African American to receive a prestigious five-year fellowship from the Charleston Scientific and Cultural Education fund and left South Carolina in 1949 for New York City after he finished high school. He attended New York University and Cooper Union while working in the frame shop of Herbert Benevy. Many well-known artists came to the frame shop and in time critiqued Simpson's work and developed a relationship with him. At NYU Simpson became acquainted with Hale Woodruff...

"Untitled" by Brenda Goodman is a painting that shows the psychological drama that Brenda brings to her artwork. She is particularly adept at rendering within the dark foreboding black backgrounds struggles that humans often live within. There is a dramatic tension set up between the forms represented here: the large looming over the small, the stronger over the weaker, the smarter over the less capable. This painting is open for and encourages endless interpretations. Brenda Goodman is an American artist and painter currently living and working in Pine Hill, New York. Her artistic practice includes paintings, works on paper and sculptures. She is one of the original Cass Corridor Artists from Detroit, Michigan. Other Cass Corridor Artists include Robert Sestok...

My Venus de Willendorf
Located in Kansas City, MO
Heather Farrell Title : My Venus de Willendorf Materials : Mixed media on canvas Date : 2020 Dimensions : 4' x 4' Description : I was inspired by the ongoing racial inequalities and racism plaguing America. I have been interested in the history we are taught from a young age and what this history is geared toward accomplishing and for whom. I find it interesting who dictates what history is important and what can be commodified and taken for one group's benefit over another. The Venus is an important historical and artistic discovery and I use it as a symbol for the capturing of a culture, an idea or a virtue for one group's gain over another. I also use plastic Hawaiian lei as the capturing rope because lei have more recently been used as a very touristy, sometimes cheapened symbol for American excess and materialism. After all, the American government...
