These grand highly textured pieces have remarkable depth. “In terms of real...

Rectifie, Style Moderne, Abstract Geometric, Impasto Technique Oil on Canvas.
Located in Cotignac, FR
20th century modern abstract oil on canvas titled 'Rectifie', attributed to French artist Norbert Palmade. The painting is not signed but was bought from his atelier and with a collection of his paintings and is therefore attributed to him. The work is titled and dated to the rear stretcher. A highly colourful, energetic and impactful painting. The painting is very thickly applied in an impasto technique in parts and is therefore also somewhat sculptural as a piece of art. Sand has been added to the paint to give the image great texture. A strong and impactful painting, a statement piece in any room. Norbert Palmade spent much of his early years living in Morocco. He arrived there in 1930 at the age of two and stayed until 1947 when he returned home to France. He finished his schooling in Hyères in the south of France, then travelled up to Paris to study architecture, though he always yearned to return to the South of France. In Paris, aged 25, he set up a public works business and worked as an architect right up until his retirement in 1991. Throughout this journey Palmade never stopped painting, at first in watercolours. He had always drawn, then moved on to gouache, oil and finally in the last twenty years, acrylic. The latter suited his rapid handling of paint well. He says of himself that he had no particular speciality. He would paint whatever gave him pleasure, although a large part of his heart belonged to those early years in Morocco and he painted many a canvas with subjects from this country. He took part in exhibitions in a number of towns near the south coast of France including, Sanary, Le Pradet and Ollioules. He was also the guest of honour at the Academy of the Var. Geometric abstraction is a form of abstract art based on the use of geometric forms sometimes, though not always, placed in non-illusionistic space and combined into non-objective (non-representational) compositions. Although the genre was popularized by avant-garde artists in the early twentieth century, similar motifs have been used in art since ancient times. Sonia and Robert Delauney...

Large Spanish Contemporary Juan Suarez Abstract Bold Painting Triptych Group
Located in Surfside, FL
Juan Suarez (Spanish, b. 1946) Naturaleza Muerta, Mixed media painting on three assembled canvases, (triptych) It is either oil or acrylic paint. it seems like oil to me. A label verso has it indicated as acrylic. Dimensions: 64 1/8 W: 64 1/4 in. Provenance: The Cleveland Museum of Art (bears label verso); Galerie Juana de Aizpuru Gallery (bears label verso). Born in Puerto de Santa María (Cádiz). Studies at the ETSA and at the Superior School of Fine Arts of Santa Isabel of Hungary in Seville. Grant from the Juan March Foundation in 1976. Advanced studies in Architecture and Fine Arts, University of Seville. Although he was not born in Seville, Juan Suárez is a member of the group of painters from the city who, in the seventies, linked their artistic practice, based fundamentally on painting, to international tendencies. Rather than a set of intellectual ideas, José Ramón Sierra, Gerardo Delgado and Juan Suárez shared a life experience: they were all students at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura in Seville and were all interested in art. Juan Suárez also studied at the Fine Arts Faculty. He held his first individual exhibition at Galería Juana de Aizpuru in 1970. (They were an important contemporary art gallery in Seville spain and showed Wolfgang Tillmans, Georg Dokoupil, Jordi Colomer, Albert Oehlen, Eduardo Chillida and Andres Serrano). In 1982 his work was shown in Diez Pintores Sevillanos, together with Manuel Salinas (1940) and Ignacio Tovar (1947), among others. At various points his worked has been shaped by American Abstract Expressionist painting, Latin American Geometric Abstraction and by Constructivist painting and sculpture. In 1976 he received a grant from Fundación March, and in 1980 another from CINFE at the Ministry of Culture. He was awarded the Drawing Prizes at the Nuremberg Biennial (1979) and ARTEDER 82, the Premio de Pintura from the Diputación Provincial de Sevilla, also in 1982, and the Premio de los Festivales de Navarra in 1985. The Geometric spirit that is ever-present in his work and his perpetual curiosity lead him to incorporate materials from a very wide range of sources; composing some pieces with superimposed planes where abstraction is a key actor. His background in architectural practice and his constant demand for excellence profoundly shape his work. In his work, the influences of Barnett Newman, Jules Olitski, Kenneth Noland and, especially, Richard Diebenkorn can be appreciated. However, Juan Suárez moves away, at the same time, from the uniform vibration of color fields and the structural rigidity of closed compositions, alternating both concepts, from an emotional and poetic perspective. The density of the color dialogues with drippings and suggestive liquidiscent stains, while reserves and sharp lines make up and hold the pictorial structure. He writes in different magazines and specialized books on art and architecture. Recently the University of Seville has published its research work, New Ways of Living. Exhibition 2008 Primavera, verano, otoño, invierno. Galería Egam. Madrid. "Moon Face" Pink, Black, Yellow, and Gray Modern Abstract Painting
Located in Houston, TX
Gray, pink, red, and yellow toned abstract contemporary painting by Chicago-based artist, Richard A. Johnson. Painting depicts various shapes and lines that appear to be floating above the canvas. Dimensions Without Frame: H 49.75 in. x W 55.88 in. Artist Biography: "There is something about the ocean that is so entwined with our makeup, that I can't help but be drawn to it. There really is nothing more powerful or hypnotic. The movement is ever changing and the attempt to capture that moment of change is what has engaged me in these pieces. There is something so ephemeral about all life that is perfectly captured in a wave. It only exists for a moment, but it's beauty and dynamism is so powerful that for that brief amount of time, nothing else matters. And yet, there is a subtlety, a moment of expansive calm, the monochrome of the colors and yet the exquisite and diverse play of tones. All of this captivates me and compels me to try and capture it all that on canvas." - Richard Johnson The luminescent beauty and lyrical quality of Richard S. Johnson's work is what captivates collectors today. "Old Masters" technical virtuosity, pre-Raphael romanticism, and contemporary expressionism and abstraction all combine to create his unique works of touching depth and artistry. Born in Chicago to an artistic family, his earliest reminiscences are of pouring through Charles Dana Gibson, N.C. Wyeth, and John Singer Sargent books on rainy afternoons. While still in grade school he won a scholarship to the prestigious Art Institute of Chicago. He later attended the American Academy of Art and upon graduation began a very successful career as an illustrator. Turning his attentions to fine art after winning a competition in International Artists Magazine, Rick was invited to Japan where his one man show was so successful that he has been invited back numerous times and has developed an international base of collectors. He has also won many awards in competitions here in the United States including the Award of Excellence, in the Oil Painters of America Midwest regional Juried Competition and People's Choice Award at the International Museum of Contemporary Master's of Fine Art in San Antonio, TX. Perhaps the term that best describes Rick's work is "Poetic Intimacy". His sure brush strokes, bold use of color and impasto, and delicate rendering of the human face and form all work together in a harmony that refuses to draw attention to themselves for their technical virtuosity, but rather to draw their viewer into the awareness that they are sharing one, serene, contemplative moment; that the light that pours over the subject's skin also caresses theirs. Rick's expressive skill for capturing the human form has brought him numerous commissions: - John F. Kennedy at the JFK Memorial Library in Boston. - A commemorative painting of the presidents from Eisenhower to Bush currently hanging at the President's Council on Physical Fitness in Washington D.C. - Rear Admiral Richard S. Truly, USN, the first commander of the NASA Space Shuttle...

Large Original Abstract Colorful Oil Painting Israeli Kibbutz Landscape Shemi
Located in Surfside, FL
Life in Nature Canvas measures 31.5 X 39.5 (I believe this is oil it might also be acrylic.) Hand signed recto and signed and titled verso. Calman Shemi, sculptor and painter, was born in Argentina in 1939. A graduate of the School of Sculpture and Ceramics in Mendoza, he studied under the Italian-Argentinean sculptor Libero Badii whom he credits with putting him on the right path. “He taught me principals, not only related to sculpture, but human and philosophic principals. Shemi also carefully studied the work of such masters as Picasso, Caravaggio, Frank Stella and Matisse. “From each one of these great artists I learned something from observing them,” he says. In 1961, at the age of 20, Shemi immigrated to Israel and joined Kibbutz Carmia of which he was a member for twenty years. There he worked in agriculture and also as a sculptor working with wood and clay. Several of his large-scale fiberglass and polyester projects are situated in public buildings. He was a student of German-Israeli sculptor Rudi Lehmann, a pioneer of the artistic movement known as “Canaanism.” Canaanite art was an effort to create a direct relationship with the land, bypassing historic Jewish connotations—hence the land’s primordial name is used. Canaanite works, with an emphasis on the inter-action of simple shapes, bear a deliberate resemblance to the sculpture and ritual art of early civilizations of the Middle East prior to Judaism, always with an eye to the fusion of man and the land itself. Though sculpture dominated his early years as an artist, in the mid ’70s Shemi developed the idea of the “soft painting” medium. Beginning with a color drawing done to scale, Shemi layers onto the drawing irregularly shaped pieces of variously textured and colored fabrics. Using a threadless 9,000-needle sewing machine, the fabrics are meshed to one another and to the background, resulting in vibrant carpet tapestry compositions infused with exuberant color and explosive movement. These are neither aubusson nor pile but more of a felt wall hanging...

Vintage Abstract -- "Z" for Znta
By Lewis Kesling
Located in Soquel, CA
Gorgeous pastel hued graphic-linear abstract intermittent with "Zs" and the word "Znta" by artist Lewis Kesling (American, 1930-2003). 1983. Signed and dated lower left corner. Presented in wooden frame. Image size: 40"H x 30"W. Kesling was from Hollidays Cove, West Virginia then moved to Monterey, California. He is known for his abstracts and has works in the Metropolitan Museum of Art collection. "My paintings are a physical manifestation of my exploration of the endless sea of self. Our short visit here in the vastness of all time passes swiftly and there is little of it to spend looking back or stopping to survey what has been and is now gone. I do not know if there will ever be an endpoint when I might be able to look back, nor am I concerned with the end. Death and finality have already come to many who still walk the shore, afraid to sail that sea of self, fearing an end when actually the shore is the end and the sea the beginning." [Kesling, in "Nine West...
