Natan Heber was trained by his father in Poland to be a ritual slaughterer. In 1925, he joined the Zionist movement "Mizrachi" and in 1936 immigrated to Palestine where he opened a poultry shop in Haifa. He began to paint at the age of sixty-one, after ill health forced him to retire. Driven by a need to memorialize his family and their shtetl community lost in the Holocaust, he drew scenes of traditional Jewish life. Unfamiliar with the conventions of scale and perspective, he set his heavily outlined frontal figures on steeply rising surfaces and often portrayed his father in monumental size to mark his importance. One of Israel's greatest naive-style painters. Along with Shalom of Safed, Kopel Gurwin and Gabriel Cohen, He is renowned as one of Israel's greatest living naive-style folk art painters, The Haifa Museum of Art will be opening the first ever Outsider Art exhibition (also known as Art Brut) in Israel in January 2013.

This drawing is part of five lithographs set to illustrate scenes from the 14th Century Tutinama, a Persian series of 52 stories, also known as "Tales of the Parrot."
Tales of adventures told by a parrot, night after night, for 52 successive nights, are moralizing tales to persuade its owner not to commit adultery misconduct with a lover in her husband's absence.
Hand-written signature on bottom right corner: "Uzarski - 19".
The lithograph is ornate with a contemporary wood frame and an acrylic glass protection.

Biography: Adolf Uzarski (1885 - 1970) was a German writer, artist, and illustrator associated with the "New Objectivity Movement."
He was born in Ruhrort bei Duisburg (1885) and studied at the Cologne School of Architecture before enrolling in 1906 at the Düsseldorf School of Arts and Crafts. Before World War I, he exhibited in Berlin and Hagen and became a successful commercial artist. While directing the advertising department of the Tietz department store in 1916–17, he produced the portfolio of lithographs, Totentanz (Danse Macabre - Dance of Death). In “My Best Friend” Girard has captured a tender symbiotic relationship between the woman and her sweet pet. The entire piece swirls with the soft beauty and magical exchange shared by the two individuals. The frame does not enclose so much as enfolds the scene and its decorations are an integral part of the work. Upon close inspection tiny animal figures cavort in the air adding to the spell - almost like fairy characters from Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer’s Night Dream.” The jewelry is beautifully render as are the loving expressions of the faces of both the animal and the woman. The composition is filled with objects and figures but captured softly and in rich detail. The figures appear to be completely self-absorbed and the decorative elements about their heads could suggest the intensity of their thoughts and feelings.
Girard was a Detroit figurative painter and teacher at College for Creative Studies, Detroit, Michigan where he taught for 30 years.
