A female and male Goosander bird on ice floes. In the center of the painting there is a smaller opening in the ice covered waters. This painting, by Christian Berg (1893-1976) is quite interesting and unusual for his works. It is signed "Ch. Berg" and dated 1918. Berg is mostly famous for his sculptures which was to become his signum works later in his life. He is known primarily for his abstract artworks. He was educated at the Technical School and Althin's painting school in Stockholm 1911–1914. In the years 1914–1917 he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and started with animal painting in the spirit of Bruno Liljefors. Our painting is from this period just after he finished his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. In 1921, he studied in Berlin and Dresden which was followed by a trip to Egypt in 1925. In the same year he moved to Paris and had a studio on rue Guénégaud. He studied with André Lhote and his interest in cubism was awakened. Is there anything more cute than a dog yawning? Especially a gorgeous little Dachshund? I think not. Painted in 1915 and signed G A C, this super little painting is a profile view of a seated conker brown Dachshund. He is caught in the middle of a great big yawn, eyes blissfully closed, ready for a nap on someone's lap. The light from the right is highlighting the dog's head, ear, pink tongue and fore legs, beautifully accentuating its features and anatomy. The palette and brushwork are superb. The background fades downwards from dark to light, making the dog stand out perfectly. This is a superb 1915 oil painting of a lovely little yawning dachshund needing its forever home and perfect for all the dog lovers out there.

Private French collection of the work of Gen Paul
Gen-Paul was born in the Rue Lepic, at the heart of Montmartre. His mother was an embroiderer, and his father was a café musician. Gen-Paul began painting from a young age. An apprentice interior decorative artist, he looked about him in the wealthy apartments where his work took him and observed the pieces collected by art lovers, and he learned anatomy by getting to know surgeons and going with them into operating theatres. He also attended the École des Beaux-Arts. He painted on discarded cigar boxes using coloured supplements from L'Illustration as models. This was in 1913. At the outbreak of World War I he volunteered for service and was wounded; a year later a second wound led to the amputation of his right leg. Back in Paris in 1916, he began to paint. His first oil painting, the Moulin de la Galette seen from his window, dates from 1916. His early works are not easy to identify, as he painted many views of Paris to satisfy customers who wanted a painting 'in the style of so-and-so'. In 1918 he first signed a canvas Gen-Paul. In 1920 he showed work at the Salon d'Automne, remaining faithful to this institution and to the Salon des Indépendants. His first solo show took place in the Galerie Bing in 1926. He illustrated several of Céline's books, including Journey to the End of Night, Death on Tick ( Voyage au bout de la nuit, Mort à crédit) in 1942. He also produced engravings, some of which were published as a collection entitled Views of Montmartre ( Les vues de Montmartre). When World War II ended he travelled frequently to the USA and New York. In 1952 the Galerie Drouant-David in Paris put on a retrospective dedicated to him. Gen-Paul did not exhibit much, had no dealer, and travelled frequently in France and Spain. Posthumous collective exhibitions include: Galerie Roussard...

Retta Scott or Retta Worcester was (February 23, 1916 – August 26, 1990) was an pioneering Female Illustrator / American artist. She was the first woman to receive screen credit as an animator at the Walt Disney Animation Studios.
Scott worked on storyboards to develop scenes of Bambi, his mother, and the film’s hunting dogs, on which she spent weeks to develop them into “vicious, snarling, really mean beasts.” Male artists in the company were stunned who initially assumed that only a man could create drawings with such intensity and technical skill. Her sketches caught the eye of Disney, so when the film went into production, she was assigned to animate scenes of hunting dogs chasing Faline. She worked under the film's supervising director, David D. Hand,and was tutored by Disney animator Eric Larson. This was a significant coup for the young woman, since at the 1930s-era Disney studio, women were considered only for routine tasks: "Ink and paint art was a laborious part of the animation process, and was solely the domain of women..." Her promotion to animator was in part thanks to the success of herself and other women such as Bianca Majolie, Sylvia Holland, and Mary Blair as storyboard artists. Even after receiving a promotion to animator, she and her animations continued being under appreciated in the industry. Though the most recognized Walt Disney female artist is Mary Blair, it is Retta Scott who opened up the doors for women in the animation industry. She became the first woman to receive screen credit as an animator. By the spring of 1941, Scott was also considered a "specialist in animal sketches."
