Johannes Schiefer was born in 1896 in the Netherlands, and quickly gained notoriety for his landscapes, still life’s and portraits. Schiefer won the Prix de Rome at the age of 19 and studied at the Düsseldorf Academy in Germany, and then moved to Paris where he continued his studies in art at the Beaux Arts, and later at the Villa Medici in Rome. The first thing to ask about any Clementine is: is it authentic. Yes, there are fakes, and paintings by her son that are mistaken for (or presented as) hers. I won't touch anything by her that hasn't been verified, and this one has been verified by the #1 Clementine expert, Tom Whitehead. Of course it has my own guarantee as well; I have sold many Clementines. You can find fakes at auction houses (many of them outside of the New Orleans area) and other venues that don't ask questions, for a lot less money, but don't be fooled!
Now, about the painting. This one has a clear, wonderful provenance, which is unusual for these. Weddings were a common theme for Hunter, but this one has a specific history. It was gifted to Mr. and Mrs. Merrill by Ann and Jack Brittain in 1967 as a wedding present; then went by descent to the estate of Mary Jane "Cookie" Grace Merrill of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. 18" x 24", slightly larger with frame. I will be including a free copy of the hardcover book (show in photo) by Art Shiver and Tom Whitehead about Clementine (Whitehead is the expert who verified this painting). Exhibited: 38 National Juried Exhibitions, 14 Museum Solo Shows and 51 Gallery Solo Exhibitions.
Author: Portrait Painting, 1964; Painting the Nude, 1968.
De Ruth, a native of Czechoslovakia and an American citizen, spent the years of World War II being shunted through five different concentration camps, including the infamous Auschwitz. He made four escape attempts and finally made good on his fifth try.
De Ruth constantly sought materials with which to draw, but "The only things we had were the few pieces of cloth we wore," he recalls. By chance, he was transferred to Germany as part of a labor detail and managed to sneak a pencil away from the camp supervisor. "I became a perfect thief during those years," he says. De Ruth drew a mother and child on a scrap of paper he scrounged from the factory where he worked and filled it in with shadings of coffee in various strengths-his finger was his brush. He exchanged the sketch for a piece of bread from a camp guard, and in effect, sold his first painting.
In March of 1945, after being transferred to his native Czechoslovakia, he made his successful escape "knowing every step of the way." After the war, De Ruth became the commissar in a small Czech town and remained in the post for one year, just long enough to forge some documents that allowed him to flee to England. He took up residence in London and enrolled at the Ruskin Art School in Oxford University. He arrived in the USA in 1948.
There are times in the life of a painter when his dedication to his art is overshadowed by the immediate requirements of self-preservation. This was one of those times! From '48 to 1955 he supported himself by working at night, earning his way painting designs on neckties and bathroom cups...

This lovely impressionist painting portrays what appears to be a family outing or picnic. There are many beautifully dressed women with their children in a park setting. Oddly, what appears to be missing are men, or their husbands. Perhaps it’s a women’s organization that included their young children. The scene must depict late spring or summer, given the foliage and their beautiful dresses. The colors are bright and cheerful and the late impressionist style is clearly evident. The artist appears to have signed the painting lower left, but it is very difficult to completely decipher. The date, 1925, seems to be clearer. All in all, this work is a one-of-a-kind period painting that will enhance any sophisticated room or setting. The frame is a soft lemon gold period cove frame that may be just a bit older than the work by about 10 years. This work has been recently professionally repaired, cleaned and varnished.
Both the painting and the frame are in very good condition. There are a few professional repairs to the canvas, only visible from the patches shown on the backside. The frame has a few minor blemishes here and there, expected with its age. The canvas measures 18” x 22” and the overall framed dimensions are 24 1/2” x 28 1/2”.
