About
The painting with the vision of St. Francis of Assisi shows the saint looking up to heaven. The scene refers to a vision that Francis experienced in 1205. In that year, Francis was praying in a dilapidated church in San Damiano when Christ on the cross appeared to him. He demanded Francis to restore his Church. Initially, Francis took that message quite literally and had the church of San Damiano restored. Later in life - in 1209 - Francis contributed to the real strengthening of the Catholic Church by establishing his mendicant order, the Friars Minor. The crucifix of Francis’ vision may have been depicted in the upper left corner. Today we still see traces of the original motif. In the actual state we read the word "CHARITAS" ("Charity") on that spot.
