About the Item

"Man and Time" is an American surrealist oil on canvas painting by Irving Norman in 1986. The artwork is 58 x 30 inches and 59 1/8 x 31 1/8 x 1 1/2 inches with the frame, weighing less than 50 lbs. It is signed and dated verso on stretcher bar, "I. Norman 1986" and also inscribed verso on stretcher bar, "Dedicated to Mark Rothko". Norman's surrealist paintings transport viewers into dystopian realms where human figures meld with machinery, creating haunting landscapes of industrialized chaos and existential reflection. The painting explores the relationship between humanity and the relentless march of time. The hourglass is symbolic to time's inevitable passing. It is a symbol of death, the end of time on Earth, but also a symbol of rebirth and new beginnings when turned over. Provenance: Private Collection Literature: Scott A. Shields & Ray Day, Dark Metropolis: Irving Norman’s Social Surrealism, Sacramento, CA, 2006, pg. 215

Artist Comments
Artist Guigen Zha presents elements of Chinese cultural relics set upon a surrealist beach. A Tang Sancai, a type of pottery from the Tang Dynasty, sits prominently with its gilded handles. Together on the steps are an embroidered shoe worn by women and a pomegranate flower in full bloom. He paints a snail walking into a mural depicting cultural history. "The piece presents a reminder of the past and how time flies," says Guigen.
