Artist Statement:
Though we don’t generally think about it, thirteenth-century religious art actually reflects medieval European perceptions of events that occurred in the ancient Middle East. In the Divine Beauty project I filter sacred iconography through the secular lens of today’s societal perceptions by placing found commercial fashion imagery (from magazines and other sources) in the context of painted religious narratives, producing a clash of ideas that throw both sources into question.
Like many Western New Yorkers, I was raised Catholic. I attended a Catholic elementary school, went to church every day. While the indoctrination didn’t last beyond childhood, it did instill a lifelong affinity for the visual traditions of sacred art. But, as the recent economic meltdown has made apparent, conspicuous global consumption has replaced western religion today as the favored path to personal fulfillment. While strolling through the Metropolitan I was viewing the wing piece of a more extensive altar and observed words etched into the golden grounds.
This had a profound resonance with me because of my fascination and utilization of words in all of my work.
Next I visited the Cloisters and stood transfixed in front of Robert Campion’s “Annunciation”
Of particular interest was the lovely white lily that indicates Mary’s purity.

Style : K G Subramanyan was one of the leading artists who was part of India’s post-Independence search for identity through art. A writer, scholar, teacher and art historian, K G Subramanyan was prolific in his art, spanning the spectrum of mediums from painting to pottery, weaving, and glass painting. He believed in the value of Indian traditions and incorporated folklore, myth and local techniques and stories into his work.
Critic Geeta Kapur has stated that Subramanyan was deeply influenced by popular, modern, classical and indigenous traditions. No matter what the medium, be it handmade paper or acrylic sheet, his artistic practice has integrated fluid traditions so as to create a new lingua franca. The strokes that shape the faces and the little blobs, the vertical and horizontal drama all become like a choreographed symbolism that has a sense of play in line and length. Nothing is in excess, nothing is obnoxious but each stroke forms the finesse of versatile ventures.
About the Artist and his work :
K.G. Subramanyan (1924-2016) was born in Kerala.
Education : He completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from the Presidency College in Chennai.
In 1948, he graduated from Kala Bhavan in Santiniketan, where he studied under the tutelage of Benode Behari Mukherjee, Nandalal Bose and Ramkinkar Baij.
In 1955, he received a British Council Research Fellowship to the Slade School of Art at the University of London.
He was an inspiration to generations of students as a member of the Baroda M S Fine Arts Faculty. His focus there in later years was on terracotta and pottery.

The gold leaf adds a three-dimensional softness as well as a glow upon which the female figure floats. Her skin is seductively painted; her teal dress falls off her shoulder; white peonies float by; the scene is set for a dreamy visual feast. The painting is framed in a gilt frame.
