Harold Kitner was born on May 18, 1921 in Cleveland, Ohio and was the son of Isaac and Frieda Kitner. He obtained his MA from Case Western Reserve University in 1947. Kitner was a postgraduate from Cleveland Institute, Ohio University, Cleveland College, Washington and Lee University. He obtained his Doctorate from Kent State University. Exhibition: Harold Kitner - Active / Figure / Exaltation at Kent State School of Art Gallery in Kent, Ohio in 2014.
Harold Kitner taught for over 30 years at the Kent State University School of Art.
Harold Kitner began teaching art and art history at Kent State University in 1947. During his career, he served as Director and Chairman of the Fine Arts Division. Kitner played a significant role in creating the Art School’s core program, organizing the Kent State Arts Festival, and the Blossom Festival School. He also served as President of the Kent chapter of the American Association of University Professors, and was an art critic for the Akron Beacon Journal. In 1967, Kitner became Kent State University’s first Faculty Ombudsman, officially titled Dean for Faculty Counsel. He held this position until 1974. At the time of the Kent State shootings, Kitner’s position as Ombudsman meant that he was involved in many of the decisions regarding University administration in the weeks and months following the Kent State shootings. She exhibited at the 25th Annual Drawing, Print and Sculpture Exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, 1961.

Jirayr Hamparzoom Zorthian was born April 14, 1911 in Kutahya, Turkey, of Armenian parents. At the age of three, he showed considerable talent in drawing and painting.
Zorthian went through two Turkish massacres before age eight. He left Turkey at age nine with his family and spent a year in Padua, Italy, waiting for his visa to open to the United States. This period was very important in his life because his father took him to many cities in Europe and exposed him to great works of art.
Zorthian arrived in the United States at the age of eleven and settled with his family in New Haven, Connecticut. He obtained his formal education there, after graduating from Yale, the Winchester Fellowship granted him a year and a half at the American Academy in Rome with travel and study throughout Europe.
His art career branched into various directions on his return to the United States. As a mural painter his reputation was established. He has forty two (42) murals throughout the United States. Zorthian worked and taught painting at some of the finest art academies on the west coast including both the Chouinard Art Institute and the Otis Art Institute.

Renzo Vespignani was born in Rome on February 19, 1924 to Guido Vespignani and Ester Molinari, great-grandson of Virginio Vespignani, a famous architect. After the death of his father, a surgeon and cardiologist, he had to move very young with his mother to
the proletarian area of Portonaccio, adjacent to the San Lorenzo district, where he grew up.
He began to paint during the Nazi occupation, hiding with the engraver Lino Bianchi Barriviera, his first teacher. Other important points of reference, which influenced his artistic beginnings, were Alberto Ziveri and Luigi Bartolini while, especially in his first
paintings, the influence of expressionists such as George Grosz and Otto Dix seems evident. In 1945 he exhibited his first personal exhibition and began to collaborate with various political-literary magazines (Domenica, Folla, Mercurio, La Fiera Letteraria) with
satirical writings, illustrations and drawings. His work, between 1944 and 1948, describes the attempt to resurrect an Italy destroyed by the war. In 1956 he founded, with other intellectuals, the magazine Città Aperta, focused on the problems of urban culture.
In 1961 he was among the winners of the Spoleto Prize; an essay was dedicated to the selected artists accompanied by large-format reproductions (black and white and four-color) of the exhibited works.

Bacia Gordon (1904-1977) came to the United States from Poland and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. She traveled widely the United States, Mexico, Europe, and Israel. She was a member of, and has exhibited with Artists Equity, Jewish Arts Club, the Renaissance Society of the University of Chicago, The Chicago Art Institute, and in Migdal Ashkalon, Israel. She was also a member of the Chicago Society of Artists. Her work is represented in many private collections in New York, Los Angeles, Detroit, Cleveland, St. Paul, Rockford, Milwaukee, and Chicago. Mrs. Gordon spent much time in Israel in the 1950s and 1960s, and most of the works in this web site reflect her stay there.
The New York art critic, Alfred Werner, has said: “I find Mrs. Gordon’s freedom of paint aesthetically rewarding. She blends the reporter’s task of objectively recording appearance with the poet’s privilege of imprinting subjective reaction upon exterior reality... Here is the talent that often omits details, to let the spectator fill in, that prefers an allegorical hint to a straight tale, and that translates the strangeness of Maabaroth and Kibbutzim into terms of universally acceptable humanity”
An Israeli critic has written of Mrs. Gordon : “The Jewish Daughter, born in Lithuania and reared in the United States, was stirred by the miracle of the Ingathering of the Exiles. The men, women and children she pictures thrill and pulsate with life because of her warm and loving brush.”
"My first encounter with Israel in 1955 was inspiring and productive. It was a birds-eye view of the land and the people – the kibbutz, the village, the settlement, the Maabora, the Huleh project, Lachish at its inception, dedicated Israelis, new immigrants and the military of all ranks. I lived among people of many lands sketching and painting. I felt a great urgency to record and interpret. Working at an accelerated pace – line and color merged as I endeavored to express the universal qualities in these people. It was a tremendously stimulating experience and resulted in rechanneling my creative energy.
I sketched and I wandered. I sketched in the Uval Gad where pipes are made to carry water to the Negev. I wandered among the bewildered white-robed bearded men of Morocco in Lachish… and among the older Yemenite settlements in Migdal Ashkalon. In Tiberias I saw people dressed in all garbs, the orthodox mantles of the polish ghetto and the oriental robes...
