Located in San Antonio, TX
Kelly Fearing (1918-2011) Austin Artist Image Size: 42.25 x 30 Frame Size: 48.5 x 36.5 Medium: Oil/Gaouche "San Sebastion" Biography Kelly Fearing (1918-2011) The following information is from the artist's obituary, University of Texas Education News Prominent Artist and Art Educator Kelly Fearing Dies at 92 AUSTIN, Texas — Artist, art educator and University of Texas at Austin Professor Emeritus Kelly Fearing died on March 13 at his home in Austin, at the age of 92 due to congestive heart failure. Fearing was a professor emeritus in university's Department of Art and Art History. He taught at the university from 1947-87, and was presented the College of Fine Arts' E. William Doty Award in 2007, the college's highest honor recognizing him as an individual of distinction in his field who has demonstrated extraordinary interest in the college. "Kelly Fearing was the quintessential Renaissance man," said College of Fine Arts Associate Dean Ken Hale. "He was an artist, an author and an educator. His talent was extraordinary. He worked in almost all traditional mediums and excelled in oil painting and collage. Fearing was very well educated in all of the arts and enthusiastically passed that knowledge on to literally thousands of students. The University of Texas and the state of Texas have benefited greatly from the creativity and generosity of Kelly Fearing. His passing is a loss for us all." Born in Fordyce, Ark., Fearing was raised in Louisiana, studied art at Louisiana Tech University, earned a master's degree from Columbia University and went to Fort Worth during World War II to serve his country in a defense job. While being trained in graphic drafting for a company that was making bombers for the U.S. military, Fearing was introduced to other aspiring artists in the Fort Worth area. This group of avant-guard printmakers and artists became known as the Fort Worth Circle, and Fearing was one of its core members. Collectively, they were instrumental in introducing modernist ideas to Texas art. After teaching at Texas Wesleyan College from 1945-47, he came to The University of Texas at Austin as the Ashbel Smith Professor in Art in 1947. He retired from the university in 1987 and continued to work as a professional artist. His art has been referred to as magical realist, mystical naturalist and Romantic surrealist. As a pioneer in art education in America, Fearing founded The University of Texas Junior Art Project, the first visual arts outreach program of its kind in Texas. The program offered children of all ages and from all economic backgrounds free, university-based instruction and exposure to the arts. Kelly Fearing has been an important artist working in Texas since the 1940s. After doing his graduate work at Columbia University in New York City, Fearing established himself as a surrealist painter and print maker in Fort Worth, and then became one of the founding members of the art faculty at the University of Texas at Austin. He has had recent exhibitions at the Valley House Gallery in Dallas, Texas, and at the Archer M. Huntington Art Gallery in Austin, Texas. Fearing lives and works in Austin, Texas. Courtesy of Flatbread Press and Gallery Added note: Kelly Fearing died of congestive heart failure in 2011 in Austin, Texas. William KELLY FEARING (1918-2011) Born in Fordyce, Arkansas, Kelly Fearing entered college as an accounting major but quickly discovered his intense interest in art. He studied art at Louisiana Tech University and later at Columbia University. He taught public school briefly before relocating to Texas to teach art at the university level in El Paso and Fort Worth before joining the faculty at the University of Texas at Austin. "My Best Friend", Oil, Hand-Painted Frame, Female, Pet, Rich Earth Tones
By WILLIAM GIRARD
Located in Detroit, MI
SALE ONE WEEK ONLY In “My Best Friend” Girard has captured a tender symbiotic relationship between the woman and her sweet pet. The entire piece swirls with the soft beauty and magical exchange shared by the two individuals. The frame does not enclose so much as enfolds the scene and its decorations are an integral part of the work. Upon close inspection tiny animal figures cavort in the air adding to the spell - almost like fairy characters from Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer’s Night Dream.” The jewelry is beautifully render as are the loving expressions of the faces of both the animal and the woman. The composition is filled with objects and figures but captured softly and in rich detail. The figures appear to be completely self-absorbed and the decorative elements about their heads could suggest the intensity of their thoughts and feelings. Girard was a Detroit figurative painter and teacher at College for Creative Studies, Detroit, Michigan where he taught for 30 years. Other College for Creative Studies (formerly Center for Creative Studies) faculty and graduates include Richard Jerzy, Harry Bertoia, Doug Chaing (currently director of Lucas Film), Stephen Dinehart (game maker, writer, designer connected with The David Lynch Foundation), Tyree Guyton (international artist), Herb Babcock, Jerome Feretti, Kevin Siembieda (writer, designer and publisher of role-playing games), Renee Radell, Philip Pearlstein, Charles McGee (nationally recognized African American sculptor of animal and dancing spirits), Philip Pearlstein (2000 Honorary Doctorate, Modern Realism style), and John Louis Krieger...

Emilio Rodríguez Larraín was a Peruvian postwar and contemporary painter and sculptor who was born in 1928. He was trained at the Lima School of Engineers (currently the National University of Engineering) from 1945 to 1949. This is how he entered art and was able to learn tools and techniques that would help him in his future works. In the 1950s he ventured into painting under the influence of the French architect and abstract art painter Jean Dewasne, thus developing a painting style based on the abstract and the geometric until his trip to Europe where he migrated to the style of modernist informalism. and made paintings that alluded to the cultures of ancient Peru. In 2016, the Lima Art Museum presented a retrospective exhibit of his paintings and sculptures, calling Rodriquez Larraine "An important avant-garde sculptor, architect and painter who knew how to adapt to the artistic changes of the time and play a very important role in the visual arts of Peru." The piece we offered the front over of Staempfli Gallery's exhibit of Rodriquez-Larrain work. The write-up of Rodriquez-Larrain's work by The New Yorker, November 3, 1962 states: "Talk story about Emilio Rodriguez-Larrain, a Peruvian painter, who currently has 46 paintings on display at the Staempfli Gallery. A photograph of Emilio, distributed by the gallery, showed a great resemblance to Zero Mostel. He doesn't look like Mostel at all. The picture was taken in Paris last May, when he had the mumps. He was born in Lima in 1928, the son of an industrialist. His father's family came to Peru in the 17th century. Mr. Staempfli met Emilio in Llansa, Spain, last summer. Gordon Washburn, the director of fine arts at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh, who had shown him last year, told Staempfli to look up Emilio, because he knew a tailor in Llansa who would make you a corduroy suit...
