"Untitled" is a painting by artist David Smith. The work is signed and dated in the upper left "David Smith (symbol) 1936". When David Smith set up a workshop on the Brooklyn Navy Pier in 1933 to learn direct-metal techniques, he shared the space not with artists, but with professional welders. Yet as he stated in 1964, ‘…all my early friends were painters…I never conceived of myself as anything other than a painter because my work came straight through the raised surface.’ Picasso and Cubism would be dominant influences in Smith’s work. He understood that Picasso imagined the world as a sculptor might, and not necessarily limited to the unavoidable impact of Cubism. In addition to pursuing a kind of rethinking of the world in three-dimensionality on his own terms, by the late 1920s, Picasso had shown interest in surrealism. That meant drawing not as a depiction of reality, but rather as a reconfiguration of the body in an assemblage of often precariously balanced, interconnected forms — some expressed in a three-dimensional form, others as drawings or paintings. Those processes are reflected in this work by David Smith; three fanciful totemic assemblages set within a landscape perspective of ground, mountains, and sky and whose presence is surreal enough to cast shadows under a presumed solar presence. Untitled, 1936 embraces surrealism, yet also serves to demonstrate the extent to which his thought processes are inextricably linked to sculpture and related to scale, spatial orientation, and three-dimensionality. With that in mind, it is not surprising to know that Smith saw no demarcation between sculpture and painting, or that a painting such as Untitled (1936) can exist outside of planning or design for future three-dimensional work. During the Great Depression, he rode the rails back to New York with just $5 in his pocket to attend the National Academy of Art, where he met his first wife. Snipper applied to the academy twice to ensure he would be accepted: once under his given name and once under his mother's maiden name. When he was accepted as Martin Snipper, he adopted the name permanently. In addition to his career as a fine artist, Snipper became a foundational figure in the development of the San Francisco Bay Area art movement of the 1960's and 1970's. Snipper remains a legendary figure in San Francisco, both for boldly expanding the Arts Commission during his tenure as Executive Director (1967-1980), and for helping shepherd the Neighborhood Arts Program into existence over 40 years ago. His innovative grass-roots approach inspired similar programs in cities across the United States while San Francisco's own program continues to bring writers into public schools, oversee the city's publicly owned cultural centers, and fund art programs and events. "He took the commission from being a sleepy operation ... and transformed arts in this town to a place it had never been before," said Stephen Goldstine, who ran the Neighborhoods Art Program under Mr. Snipper and later became president of the San Francisco Art Institute. Claude Weisbuch, 1927-2014 French painter, draftsman and engraver. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts (School of Fine Arts) in Nancy and upon graduation became a professor of engraving at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de of St. Etienne. His first solo exhibition was in 1957. In 1968 , he became a full member of the Society of French Painters-Engravers . In 1997 he was awarded the Legion of Honor His work is essentially devoted to engraving, by which he likes to translate, thanks to the line, the life, movement and character of his characters: Punchinels, harlequins, musicians or equestrian scenes. He practices various techniques ( lithography, drypoint etching etc.) that he puts to use in the illustration of bibliophile books. Claude Weisbuch is also a painter and draftsman. His favorite colors are ochres, browns and whites, with which he seeks to introduce the effects of light by compositions where the line and finesse of the drawing preserve the life found in his engravings. His precise and dynamic line delivers a moving and swirling work on themes he loves: theater, opera, equestrian, musicians, card players, Kabuki dancers and many portraits. His works have the appearance of unfinished sketches mixing few colors but a great vivacity of the line. He illustrated many limited edition signed fine art books. Alon with Christo, Arman and Cesar he is considered among the great post war French artists of the last generation.
