Realist Figurative Paintings

REALIST STYLE

Realist art attempts to portray its subject matter without artifice. Similar to naturalism, authentic realist paintings and prints see an integration of true-to-life colors, meticulous detail and linear perspectives for accurate portrayals of the world.

Work that involves illusionistic techniques of realism dates back to the classical world, such as the deceptive trompe l’oeil used since ancient Greece. Art like this became especially popular in the 17th century when Dutch artists like Evert Collier painted objects that appeared real enough to touch. Realism as an artistic movement, however, usually refers to 19th-century French realist artists such as Honoré Daumier exploring social and political issues in biting lithographic prints, while the likes of Gustave Courbet and Jean-François Millet painting people — particularly the working class — with all their imperfections, navigating everyday urban life. This was a response to the dominant academic art tradition that favored grand paintings of myth and history.

By the turn of the 20th century, European artists, such as the Pre-Raphaelites, were experimenting with nearly photographic realism in their work, as seen in the attention to every botanical attribute of the flowers surrounding the drowned Ophelia painted by English artist John Everett Millais.

Although abstraction was the guiding style of 20th-century art, the realism trend in American modern art endured in Edward Hopper, Andrew Wyeth and other artists’ depictions of the complexities of the human experience. In the late 1960s, Photorealism emerged with artists like Chuck Close and Richard Estes giving their paintings the precision of a frame of film.

Contemporary artists such as Jordan Casteel, LaToya Ruby Frazier and Aliza Nisenbaum are now using the unvarnished realist approach for honest representations of people and their worlds. Alongside traditional mediums, technology such as virtual reality, artificial intelligence and immersive installations are helping artists create new sensations of realism in art.

Orange
Located in Sag Harbor, NY
Painted from a sketch from life, a nude, female figure sits with an orange cloth draped around her shoulders. Ramiro places the figure on a pedestal, draped in white linens. The figure's back is revealed, curving sensually and naturally, hair pulled up in a bun to accentuate her form. Signed: Angel Ramiro Sanchez in lower right corner Angel Ramiro Sanchez was born in 1974 in Maracaibo, Venezuela. At age six was accepted with full scholarship into the Instituto the Niños Cantores del Zulia, school for musically gifted children. At age fourteen he began five years of apprenticeship with the realist painter, Abdon J. Romero, an eminent specialist in murals for churches and public buildings. In 1993, a study grant from Mgr. Gustavo Ocando Yamarte, Founder the Niños Cantores, enabled him to travel to Florence, Italy, where he studied at the renowned Accademia di Belle Arti, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1997. At the same time, he was enrolled at The Florence Academy of Art,founded by painter Daniel Graves, where he received a diploma in Painting. Ramiro was appointed senior painting instructor at The Florence Academy of Art in 1997, and is currently Director of the Advanced Painting Program. Ramiro paints only from life, searching for accuracy beyond physical appearance to reach the psychological state of his subject. He believes the painter must draw his information from "all five senses" to tell the complete human story. Ramiros work is predominantly represented by th e Grenning Gallery in Sag Harbor, New York, but also Scriba Gallery, venice, Italy, Jack Meier Gallery, Houston, Tx. Ramiros works can be found in numerous private collections in Europe, The United States and South America. Public collections include: The Fondazione Stelline, Milan, Italy. Girl with a Lute
Located in Lawrence, NY
The well known and highly regarded landscape and figure painter Nicolai S. Cikovsky was born in Russia in 1894. He studied at the Vilna Art School, 1910-1914; the Penza Royal Art School, 1914-1918; and Moscow High Tech Art Institute, 1921-1923. Thus he came of age during a period of momentous cultural, political, and social upheaval. In the aftermath of the civil war, he left Russia and emigrated to the United States in 1923, exhibiting in that year in New York City at the Charles Daniels Gallery and, in the early 1930s, the Downtown Gallery and the Whitney Museum of American Art. In 1942, Cikovsky began spending summers on Long Island, New York, in the North Sea area, where he moved permanently in the late 1970s. Best known for his plein air landscapes of bucolic Hampton Bays, NY and figurative works, Cikovsky was lauded for his ability to infuse his art with feeling, capturing the spirit of a place. In Long Island he was one of the Hampton Bay Group of artists. The informally noted leader of the group was dramatic and acclaimed Blaue Reiter,Futurist- Expressionist fellow Russian artist David D. Burliuk. Emigre artists who would later be involved in the group came to America around the same time but under different circumstances. Burliuk and Cikovsky left an unhospitable Bolshevik Russia following Worl War II , arriving here in 1922 & 1923, respectively. The Soyer twins, Moses and Raphael, arrived as youngsters in 1912, fleeing Tsarist anti-Jewish persecution. John Graham (b. Ivan Dombrovski) and Arshile Gorky (formerly Vosdanig Adoian) arrived in 1920 in search of a place to make a living as artists. George Constant arrived from Greece in 1910 seeking an art education. Once in New York, these artists sought out places to exhibit their work. Ultimately, the downtown Manhattan gallery scene united them with many other artists emigre artists. Cikovsky was a member of New York City institutions, including the National Academy of Design (Associate 1968; Academician 1970); National Institute of Arts and Letters; and Society of Painters, Sculptors, and Cikovsky’s works were exhibited & won prizes in the most important exhibitions of the day, including the Brooklyn Museum's 1926 International Exhibition of Modern Art, the National Academy of Design & Art Institute of Chicago annuals, and at the NY World’s Fair...

'In the Window' by Pauline Palmer - 1928 Young Girl Figurative Oil Painting
Located in Carmel, CA
Pauline Palmer 1867–1938 Still, arguably the best-known Chicago woman artist of her time, Pauline Lennards (or Lennard) Palmer was born in McHenry, Illinois, attended school in Milwaukee and taught art in Chicago public schools. Her marriage in 1891 to prosperous Chicago physician Albert Palmer enabled her to have a full-time career as an artist. Palmer studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and began exhibiting there in 1896; she completed her formal training with three years of study in art academies in Paris. On her return to Chicago in 1902, Palmer opened a portrait studio and she quickly established herself as a fixture in the city’s art world. She exhibited regularly in the Art Institute’s three annual exhibitions and in important national and international exhibitions, notably the prestigious Paris Salon. At the Art Institute, she won numerous prizes. Her first solo exhibition was held there in 1913 at the same time as the famous so-called Armory Show of modernist art. In 1917, Palmer joined the influential artists’ community in the Tree Studios building on Chicago’s Near North Side. A leader among local artists, she was the first woman to serve as president of the Chicago Society of Artists, between 1918 and 1921, and she led the Association of Chicago Painters and Sculptors from 1929 to 1931. Palmer and her husband traveled widely, making several visits to Europe. In 1910 she worked in Giverny, France, an international center of impressionist practice where she absorbed the influence of American figural painter Richard Emil Miller...

Early Mid Century Modern Self Portrait by renowned Abstract Expressionist
Located in New York, NY
Ron Gorchov Historic Self Portrait, 1955-1959 Oil painting on board Hand signed in paint on the upper recto and dated 1955-9 Frame included: held in original vintage artist's frame This work was exhibited at the Sager Reeves Gallery in Columbia, Missouri in their Masters Exhibit in December, 2022, and is reproduced as a full page in their exhibition catalogue. A copy of this catalogue accompanies the artwork. In 2019, the year before Ron Gorchov passed away, Stephen Truax, director of Cheim & Read, his then gallery, passed along details of this extraordinary painting to Gorchov's studio to be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonne. When shown the work, Gorchov remembered it well, but was amazed that the painting was still in existence after so many years. This historic early self-portrait, done over a period of four years, from 1955-1959, starting when he was only 25 years old reveals Gorchov's distinctive and sophisticated sense of color and form. This is one of the artist's earliest works, and very few works by Gorchov from this era ever appear on the market or are known to remain in existence. It should be in any museum or career retrospective. This work was gifted by the artist to Elthea Rembrandt Peale...
