Beautiful 1931 painting by American artist, Giovanni Martino (1908-1997). Oil on canvas measures 25 x 30 inches. Measures 35 x 39 inches framed. The scene depicts what is definitively the Rockport, Mass. fishing pier. Excellent condition with a few very minor areas of paint flaking. The darker areas in the sky is a result of unpainted areas. The canvas is sized with glue but not primed white: observable areas of natural linen color results. Signed wet into wet and dated lower left. No restoration or overpaint. Giovanni Martino, National Academy of Design* member, was born on May 1, 1908 in Philadelphia PA where all seven brothers and one sister, Filomina, Frank, Antonio, Albert, Ernest, Giovanni, Edmond, and William became painters. They were under the tutelage of their eldest brother, Frank, who in the late 1920s, founded the first commercial art* studio, Martino Studios, at 27 South 18th Street. Besides studying with his two eldest brothers, Giovanni also studied with Albert Jean Adolph at La France Institute, The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts*, The Graphic Sketch Club, and Spring Garden Institute in Philadelphia. In his mid teens he accompanied his two eldest brothers to New Hope searching for subjects to paint. Signed lower left, 'Pauline Palmer' (American, 1867-1938) and painted circa 1915, two years after the artist's first solo exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago. Exhibited: Chicago Galleries Association and titled, 'Sunny Yards' (attached, partial label from original frame) A staunch proponent of pure Impressionism at the turn of the twentieth century, Pauline Palmer influenced the world of American art far beyond her Midwestern art community. Primarily known for her landscapes and portraits, Palmer rejected the waves of modernism that hit the United States in the teens and twenties, remaining true to the traditions of Impressionism. In 1923, she established the Association of Chicago Painters and Sculptors as an alternative to the increasing number of institutions celebrating Abstraction and Cubism. Pauline Palmer was enrolled at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1893 to 1898, and studied with some of the most prominent artists of the period, including William Merritt Chase and Frank Duveneck. Following her graduation, Palmer moved to Paris and attended the Académie de la Grande Chaumiére and the Académie Colarossi, where she studied under Raphael Collin. While in France, she exhibited with success including at the Paris Salon each year from 1903-06 and, again, in 1911. Her principal teacher and friend in Paris was the American Impressionist, Richard Emil Miller, whose shimmering handling of light made a profound impression upon her. Palmer also traveled extensively throughout Europe, a rite of passage for aspiring artists of her time. Returning to Paris, she studied with Gustave Courtois and Lucien Simon, both exemplars of compositional structure. Upon her return to the United States, Palmer set up her first American studio in the legendary Tree Studios building in Chicago. The artist's husband, Dr. Albert Palmer, whom she had married in 1891, both supported and encouraged his wife's artistic development. The couple kept a summer home in Provincetown, Massachusetts, where she made friends with many of the Portuguese fishermen's families, often using their children and the routines of their daily lives as subject matter for her painting. Pauline Palmer exhibited widely and with success, including in Italy, France, Norway and throughout the United States. Her works were shown at the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors and, beginning in 1899, she exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago for twenty-seven consecutive years. Over the course of her long career, she exhibited over 250 paintings at the Art Institute of Chicago, including at two solo exhibitions. She was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards including nearly all the AIC's major awards, purchase prizes and honorable mention citations. Palmer also received a gold medal from the Colarossi Academy in Paris. Involved in numerous artist organizations, she was a member of the Chicago Municipal Art League, the Chicago Art Guild, the Chicago Arts Club and a charter member of the Chicago Women's Salon. Elected the first woman president of the Chicago Society of Artists, she went on to serve as president of both the Art Institute Alumni Association and the Chicago Association of Painters and Sculptors. Considered by the Modernists of her day to be a traditionalist, Pauline Palmer remained true to her artistic vision and she continues to be regarded as one of the leading women of American Impressionism. Her light-filled, colorful compositions captured landscapes and scenes of American daily life with unusual freshness and seeming effortlessness. Celebrated during her life as "Chicago's Painter Lady," Palmer was honored twelve years after her death by a posthumous retrospective at the Art Institute of Chicago and the establishment of an annual scholarship awarded in her honor by the Art Institute of Chicago. Penney Company, represented by Russell Tether Fine Arts Assoc.; presented in a newer wood frame About the Painting Industry and Commerce is a prime example of WPA Era muralism. Like a Mediaeval alter, this mural study is filled with icons, but the images of saints and martyrs are replaced with symbols of America's gospel of prosperity through capitalism. Industry and Commerce has a strong narrative quality with vignettes filling the entire surface. Extraction, logistics, design, power generation, and manufacturing for printing, chemicals, automobiles and metal products are all represented. To eliminate any doubt about the mural's themes, Ballator letters a description into the bottom of the study. Ballator also presents an idealized version of industrial cooperation, as his workers, lab-coated technicians and tie-wearing managers work harmoniously toward a common goal in the tidy and neatly designed environments. Although far from the reality of most industrial spaces, Ballator's study reflects the idealized and morale boosting tone that many mural projects adopted during the Great Depression. About the Artist John R Ballator achieved success as a muralist, lithographer, and teacher during the Great Depression. Born in Oregon, he studied at the Portland Museum Art School, the University of Oregon and at Yale University where he received a Bachelor of Fine Art. In 1936, Ballator was commissioned to paint a mural panel for the new Department of Justice Building in Washington DC, an important project that spanned five years with several dozen artists contributing a total of sixty-eight designs. Ballator completed murals for the St. Johns Post Office and Franklin High School, both in Portland, Oregon. He also contributed to the 1938 murals at Nathan Hale School in New Haven, Connecticut. During the late 1930s, Ballator taught art for several years at Washburn College in Topeka, Kanas, where he completed a mural for the Menninger Arts & Craft Shop before accepting a professorship at Hollins College...

Charles Evans was a modernist known for his abstract style of painting. He studied at New York's Art Students League and Parsons School of Design, and later in Paris with Fernand Lger at the Acadmie Moderne. In 1930, Evans and his wife spent a year living in what was Paul Cezanne's studio in Aix-en-Provence, France. The following year, Evans purchased the old silk mill in New Hope and became involved in the area's modernist movement, joining the Independents in 1932. By 1935, he began to work collaboratively with Louis Stone, whom he had met in 1929 while studying with Hans Hofman in Saint Tropez, and with Charles F. Ramsey, teaching art classes and working on the Cooperative Painting Project. Every week, the three were joined by the abstract painter, Lee Gatch, in discussions at Ledger's Inn in Lambertville. In 1948 Evans co-founded the New Hope Gazette with Walter M. Teller. The same year he created set designs for St. John Terrell's Lambertville Music Circus.
