If you have interest in Eastern North Carolina Tidewater history and architecture, this painting may be a fine addition to your home or collection. It is an oil on board of the Sanderlin House in Belcross, Camden County. There is quite a bit of history written on a card on the back board that describes the family members of the house in the late 19th century. Camden is the courthouse town for Camden County. It is a small town located on the east side of the Pasquotank River, a few miles from Elizabeth City. Belcross is an area just outside of town. Apparently two near-identical houses were built ca 1840’s by the Sanderlin brothers, William and Joseph. One was left to ruin and disappeared, the other seems to possibly remain. In any event, per the information included, this is a view of the house by artist Miss Ella Bidgood, ca 1895. An Ella Bidgood, born in Baltimore in 1855, has been identified and she was a resident of Norfolk, Virginia with her family in the 1900 census. She is likely the artist of this painting. It is painted in a somewhat naive style but competently shows details of the house in nice, vivid colors. The painting is not signed but the information on the back side seems completely reliable. The painting itself is oil on board and measures 12” x 18”. It has been recently cleaned and varnished. It is in very good condition with no issues to report. It is housed in a substantial gold painted frame of the period with interesting detailing. Overall framed measurements are 19” x 24”. The frame is in good solid condition with no issues to report, other than expected very minor age-related wear. Note that the photos show some glare from the varnish in places that really doesn’t show in general light. Southern paintings...

Landscape oil on canvas 31 x 46 cm 12 1/4 x 18 1/8 in Stephen Bone was a 20th century landscape, mural and portrait painter. He was born in London, the son of the artist and etcher Sir Muirhead Bone. The family lived in Italy between 1910 and 1912, before Stephen returned to attend Bedales School. He went on to study at the Slade School of Art, which now forms part of University College London, from 1922 to 1924 under Henry Tonks. Bone won a gold medal for wood engraving in the Paris International Exhibition the year after his graduation. The rest of 1925 was spent touring Spain with his father and travelling to France, Greece and Scandinavia. In 1929 he married his fellow artist, Mary Adshead, who had been a student with him at the Slade. In the early years of their marriage, the two travelled around Greece, Italy and the British Isles together. An exhibition of Bone's work, alongside works from Robin Guthrie and Rodney Burn, was held at the London Goupil Gallery in 1926. In 1932 Bone became a member of the New English Art Club, having exhibited with them since around 1920. During the 1930s, he exhibited landscapes and portraits at the Royal Academy, the Fine Art Society, the Lefevre Gallery, and the Redfern Gallery, including a solo exhibition in 1938. An exhibition at Ryman's Galleries, Oxford, in 1936 included oil paintings of forty-one British counties that Bone had created during his travels. During his time in Stockholm in 1936-37, Bone produced many works and had a number of exhibitions. Lucas Cranach the Elder and Studio 1472-1553 German Moses and the Pillar of Cloud Oil on panel Moses and the Pillar of Cloud is a bold and evocative composition that showcases the signature intense color and intricate detail of Lucas Cranach the Elder’s celebrated oeuvre. The remarkable 16th-century oil on panel by Lucas Cranach and his studio captures the narrative moment when Moses leads the Israelites out of Egypt and encounters God manifested through a large pillar of cloud. Moses stands at the precipice of a bridge and turns back to soldiers helping to lead the group of Israelites who huddle closely together. Cranach depicts Moses with his traditional iconography, rendering the rays of light on his head which came to be interpreted as "horns" in the translation of the Bible. Using his traditional walking staff, Moses gestures toward the pillar, seemingly acknowledging that God will protect the group as they cross the bridge to the other side, leaving exile and entering a promised land. In a nod to Cranach’s Germanic locale, he renders the figures and setting in a manner that feels decisively more akin to European aesthetics than those of the Red Sea. Soldiers wear elaborate, gothic suits of armor that recall the livery of Northern European guardsmen. The terrain appears more like a European forest giving way to a sweeping valley than the arid landscape the Israelites trekked through on their journey across the Red Sea. Though still clearly recounting a story from the Old Testament, Cranach renders the cast of characters and setting in an earthly, familiar manner. This aesthetic shift speaks to Cranach’s own changing beliefs as he found himself at the center of the Protestant Reformation. After first gaining recognition in 1505 as the official painter of Frederick the Wise, Cranach established a thriving painting and print studio in Wittenberg, Germany. Cranach was renowned for his court portraits and genre paintings and was also well known for his association with the famous protestant reformer Martin Luther, then under the protection of Frederick the Wise. As Wittenberg became a bastion of new religious thought, Cranach soon befriended Luther and played an active role in creating the printed materials that proliferated throughout the Reformation...
