In 2008 Prey was appointed to the National Council on the Arts, the advisory body of the National Endowment for the Arts. In 2015, MASS MoCA commissioned Barbara Prey to create the world’s largest known watercolor painting (8 by 15 feet) for its new Building 6, which opened in Spring 2017. She has worked in oil painting and illustration, the latter of which she contributed to The New Yorker for a decade. She currently works and lives in Long Island, New York, Maine and Williamstown, Massachusetts. Education: Prey received her B.A in Art History with Honors from Williams College in 1979 where she was mentored by Lane Faison and a master's degree from Harvard University in 1986. A 2007 article in USA Today stated that “Prey’s academic studies at Williams College with the art historian Lane Faisson, and at Harvard University provide the connection between art and art history that so strongly informs her work.” After an internship at The Metropolitan Museum in New York City, she was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship, enabling her to spend two years in southern Germany where she studied, worked and exhibited extensively. She then worked for a year as a personal assistant-court painter to Prince Albrecht Castell-Castell. A grant from The Henry Luce Foundation from 1986-1987 to Tainan, Taiwan, where she was a visiting Professor in Western Art, enabled her to continue to study with several Chinese master painters. She continued to exhibit in Asia where she painted her first large, full-sheet paintings. Prey is currently Adjunct Faculty at Williams College, Williamstown, Massachusetts. Exhibitions Prey's work has been featured in many national and international exhibits. For the past three years, her work has been featured in the Smithsonian Traveling Exhibit: NASA Art: 50 Years of Exploration; and selected pieces can be found on exhibit at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC and at the Kennedy Space Center. In 2008 the Mona Bismarck Foundation in Paris, France presented the retrospective An American View: Barbara Ernst Prey. Preys painting "Parade Route" was chosen to be exhibited at the U.S. Embassy Hong Kong in 2015. Indian Summer in Nantuckett
By Jane Wooster Scott
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork titled "Indian Summer in Nantuckett" is an original offset lithograph on wove paper by American artist Jane Wooster Scott, born 1933. It is hand signed and numbered 681/750 in pencil by the artist. The image size is 27 x 20 inches, framed size is 39 x 32.25 inches. It is beautifully framed in a custom wood frame. It is in excellent condition. About the artist. Jane Wooster Scott grew up in the Philadelphia area and moved West following her dream to be a movie star. She quickly learned that goal was not for her, but became the host of a talk show where she interviewed movie stars. She photographs what she sees to recapture them later on canvas. However, few of her paintings are real, existing scenes. They are compositions drawn from her personal imagination. She has been exhibiting her work in Los Angeles and New York and most of her shows have completely sold out on opening night. In the "Guinness Book of Records" as one of the most reproduced artists in America, Jane Wooster Scott began copying work by folk artists such as Grandma Moses and gradually evolved into her own style. A turning point for her career was a joint showing at the Ankrum Gallery in Los Angeles with her comedian friend, Jonathan Winters. It was mostly a business crowd, and she sold 40 paintings in an hour. Her works hang in museums, in public buildings and private homes in Europe, Asia and South America as well as in the United States. She has become legendary for her exceptional scenes of America s celebrations and holidays, Among her collectors are Aaron Spelling, Sylvester Stallone, Charles Bronson, Kenny Rogers, Farah...

"New England Autumn" Philip Leslie Hale, American Impressionist Landscape House
By Philip Leslie Hale
Located in New York, NY
Philip Leslie Hale New England Autumn, 1910 Pastel on canvas 25 x 30 inches Provenance: Estate of the artist Sotheby's New York, American Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture, May 24, 1990, Lot 125 R. Anne McCarthy Rose Art Museum, Waltham, Massachusetts (gift from the above) Private Collection, Massachusetts Exhibited: Philadelphia, The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Tenth Annual Philadelphia Watercolor Exhibition, November 10 - December 15, 1912, no. 13. Painter, teacher and writer, Philip Leslie Hale is recognized for his decorative paintings of the female figure and for his interior scenes with figures as well as for his progressive approach to painting. However, his career went through several phases that included sporting scenes, figural studies of women including nudes, portraits, and allegorical works reflecting the overwhelming forces of nature. Of the Boston painters of his time, he seemed the most fully committed to Impressionism, and his technique suggests the influence of French impressionist Edgar Degas. In most of his paintings, the landscape was more important than the figure. He was a prolific writer in local newspapers and periodicals about the contemporary art scene, discussing the work of his Boston colleagues. He also wrote numerous books on art and art history including a study of Vermeer that was published in 1913. Among his writings are 1892 newspaper columns for Arcadia Magazine titled "Letters from Paris", art criticism for the Boston Herald from 1905 to 1909; and art criticism for the Boston Evening Transcript. He argued for the Boston School of Art as led by Edmund Tarbell whose style was based on Impressionism with elements of Realism, especially figure painting. Hale was born in Boston in 1865, the son Reverend Edward Hale, a Boston clergyman and a relative of Nathan Hale. He studied with Ellen Day Hale, his sister, and Edmund Tarbell at the Boston Museum School, with J. Alden Weir at the Art Students League in New York City, and then went to Paris for further studies at the Academie Julian and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He remained in France for fifteen years, returning to America about 1895. During that time, from 1888, he spent summers at Giverny, France with his good friend, artist, Theodore Butler, and became well acquainted with Claude Monet. Traveling throughout Europe, Hale visited the major museums, and copied the works of Ingres, Vermeer, Watteau and Michelangelo. Hale married Lilian Westcott Hale...
