Essay:
This exquisite small oil painting by Carl Flodman, measuring just 13 x 21 cm, showcases the immense talent of a young artist who tragically passed away at the age of 24. Painted in 1884, when Flodman was only 21 years old and a student at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, the artwork likely depicts a harbor at Djurgården in Stockholm.
The composition captures a serene yet vivid moment by the water. A warm light bathes the façade of the building near the shoreline, complemented by the striking red fence in the foreground. The bare tree suggests the season might be late autumn or winter. A plume of smoke rising from one of the boats adds an atmospheric touch, while the red flag on a mast provides a vibrant detail amidst the soft palette of blues and greys.
Flodman’s mastery of light and texture is evident in this piece, reflecting both his training and his natural gift for realism. Despite his short life, he left behind a body of work characterized by sensitive and refined depictions of landscapes, often focused on coastal and rural settings around Stockholm.
Born in Stockholm on December 17, 1863, Carl Samuel Flodman showed early promise in art. He began his studies at the Slöjdskolan (later the Technical School) and received private instruction from noted artists G.W. Palm and Oscar Törnå. Between 1883 and 1886, he was a student at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied alongside contemporaries such as Gerda Roosval-Kallstenius, Anton Genberg, and Hilma af Klint.
Flodman’s dedication to his craft was evident in his participation in artistic excursions, such as one to Kungsör in 1886 led by Professor Per Daniel Holm. His works from that period, including views of Kivik, reflect his evolving style and attention to detail. Flodman earned several accolades, including a medal in 1886 for a spring landscape and the royal medal in 1887 for his painting "Autumn Landscape."
Sadly, Flodman fell ill in the winter of 1887 due to prolonged outdoor studies. His health deteriorated, and he passed away on October 27, 1888. Despite his untimely death, his legacy endures through his evocative and meticulously crafted artworks. Today, Flodman is represented in major Swedish collections, including the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, the Gothenburg Museum of Art, and the Norrköping Art Museum.

View AllHalmstad Harbour Seen From the North, 1889
Located in Stockholm, SE
The painting "Halmstad Harbour Seen From the North" by Oscar Ohlson is a captivating snapshot of daily life and historical architecture, frozen in time from the year 1889. With a meticulous eye for detail, Ohlson has rendered approximately 25 boats in the harbor, each brimming with the quiet bustle of daily chores. The painting invites viewers to step into a moment where people converse, work, and seek respite from the sun under shared umbrellas, while wisps of smoke subtly rise from several boats, suggesting the presence of life and activity beyond the canvas.
In this vibrant scene, a man carries a sack, perhaps fresh merchandise from one of the docked vessels, while others engage in conversation, highlighting the social tapestry of the harbor. Ohlson's masterful use of light reflects on the water, creating a shimmering path that leads the eye to the majestic Halmstad Castle, which adorns the right side of the painting. This historic building, beautifully situated by the Nissan river and not far from the sea, is a testament to Halmstad's past as a Danish territory. Constructed in the early 17th century during the reign of King Christian IV, the castle stands as a reminder of the town's rich history and cultural heritage.
The first building to the right, once part of this historic tableau, has been removed to accommodate modern necessities, replaced by a road that now runs through its former site. This juxtaposition of past and present is a poignant commentary on the evolution of cities and the sacrifices made in the name of progress.
Halmstad itself, a town that straddles the Nissan river, retains much of its early 20th-century character in its city core. Low brick and half-timbered houses, some dating back to the 17th century, dot the landscape. The town center on the west side of Nissan is bordered by remnants of early 17th-century fortifications, including the 1600s castle, Norre Port from 1601, and King Charles XI's path along the old fortress wall. At the heart of the town is Stora Torg with Carl Milles' Europa and the Bull fountain from 1926, and the town hall built in 1938. The city layout, influenced by Renaissance planning, converges at Stora Torg, which is also home to the town's sole medieval building, the brick hall church of St. Nikolai from the 14th century.
Oscar Ohlson (1847-1912), a native of Linneryd, Småland, was a multifaceted individual. Beginning his career with a legal degree from Uppsala University in 1870, Ohlson's passion for the arts led him to pursue music studies before dedicating himself to art under the guidance of Alfred Wahlberg...

A wonderful continental townscape scene of a bustling harbour by Ludwig Hermann. The Medieval architecture is reminiscent of North Germany and the Baltic sea area with its busy trading ports. Figures can be seen chatting to traders as ships sail around the harbour.
Ludwig Hermann or Herman was born Elias Ludwig Julius Herrmann at Greifswald, Germany in 1812 to Wilhelm and Sophie Herrmann. Although little is recorded about his early life and education, he is known to have left his home in 1831 at the age of 19, to pursue an artistic career in Berlin. There he entered the Prussian Academy of Arts where he studied under Johann Gottfried Schadow (1764-1850).
Hermann started exhibiting at the Berlin Academy exhibitions in 1836. A year later in 1837, he travelled to Paris to study under Eugène Isabey (1803-1886) and Eugène Lepoittevin (1806-1870). By 1841 he had returned to Berlin where he married Caroline Wilhelmine ‘Auguste’ Dupont on 16 October, 1841. From his base in Berlin he travelled around Europe painting views of France...
