About the Item

This superb Scottish Impressionist landscape oil painting is by noted artist George Houston. The location is the River Ayr in spring and it was painted circa 1920. The choppy river is in the foreground, looking ready to burst its banks as it flows through the fields. Beyond are bare trees and snows scattered fields and hills. This is a charming early spring landscape with lovely muted Scottish tones and impressionistic brushwork and an excellent example of Houston's work. Signed lower left and titled verso. Provenance. Gifted in 1963 by Edward Houston, son of the artist. The scene is The River Ayr. Condition. Large oil on canvas, image size 36 inches by 28 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a gilt frame which compliments the picture, 42 inches by 35 inches and in good condition. George Houston RSA (1869-1957) was born at West Lynn, Dalry, Ayrshire. He lived most of his life around Ayrshire, Edinburgh and Argyll, although he was widely travelled for his time, visiting Japan in 1911. He is best known for his consistently high technical skill, capturing the atmosphere and changing climate and seasons of his favourite Argyll and Ayrshire. He painted mainly in oil and watercolour but also produced etchings. He specialized in the landscapes of Ayrshire and Argyll and his exceptional talent lay in creating the atmosphere, climatic conditions and season of each scene. He sometimes worked on a large scale but unlike many artists, the quality of his work remained constant. His style was not influenced by modernist trends and is best described as "late Impressionism". Houston achieved substantial commercial success, which funded a comfortable lifestyle for his ever growing family. He received widespread critical acclaim and was admired by his contemporaries for the apparent ease with which he painted. He only started painting professionally in his late thirties but "quality" came naturally to him as it usually does for truly "gifted" painters. Houston loved fishing and he loved country life. This love of the natural environment has always been (and remains) clear and obvious to the many who appreciate his paintings. Member of The London Society of 25. Elected Associate Royal Scottish academy 1900. RSW 1908, Royal Institute 1920 and Royal Scottish Academy 1925. Exhibited in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Europe and the USA. Represented in Glasgow Art Gallery (9) and other Scottish galleries. Exhibited: Royal Academy - 3, Royal Scottish Academy - 70, Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours - 11, Glasgow Institute - 122, Walker Gallery, Liverpool - 16.
