Moulin de Douvres, Torcy, on the river Marne, was originally a cereal mill dating back to the end of the 14th century and beginning of the 15th century. It was burnt down by the duke of Parma, Alexander Farnese and the Spanish army of Phillip II in the Wars of Religion in 1590 during the assault on Lagny but was late rebuilt in 1629.
The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by Madame de la Ville Fromoit and Madame Christine Lenoir.
Henri Lebasque, born in Champigné, France, in 1865, left behind a vibrant artistic legacy. Inspired by fellow painters Édouard Vuillard and Pierre Bonnard, Lebasque’s work reflects the influence of Les Nabis, a group of Intimist artists. His time in the sun-soaked landscapes of the South of France transformed his colour palette, leading him to fully embrace the vibrant Fauvist style.
Throughout his career, Lebasque painted serene family scenes, landscapes, and domestic interiors, capturing moments of quiet beauty. Critics celebrated his unique fusion of form and colour, setting him apart from other Fauvists. As a founding member of the Salon d’Automne in 1903, alongside his friend Henri Matisse, Lebasque exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants. Notably, Georges Rouault, André Derain, Henri Ottmann, Édouard Vuillard, and Matisse also participated in that exhibition.
Often hailed as “the painter of joy and light,” Lebasque skilfully portrayed the sun-dappled landscapes and opulent interiors of the French Riviera. His compositions, bridging Impressionism and Fauvism, reveal a keen sensitivity to shifting natural light and an unapologetic embrace of expressive colours and gestures, evoking powerful emotions.

Henri Lebasque
Henri Lebasque (25 September 1865 – 7 August 1937) was a French post-impressionist painter. He was born at Champigné (Maine-et-Loire). Lebasque was a founding member of the Salon d'Automne in 1903 with his friend Henri Matisse. Two years later, a group of artists exhibited there including Georges Rouault, André Derain, Édouard Vuillard, and Matisse. Lebasque also became friends with artists such as Gustave Rouault, Raoul Dufy, Louis Valtat, and Henri Manguin, the last of whom introduced Lebasque to the South of France. His time in South of France would lead to a radical transformation in Lebasque’s paintings, changing his colour palette forever. Other travels included the Vendée, Normandy, and Brittany. His work is represented in French museums, notably Angers, Geneva (Petit Palais), Lille (Musée des Beaux-Arts), Nantes, and Paris (Musée d’Orsay). Lebasque died at Cannet, Alpes Maritimes in 1937.

Nora Summers was a British painter, printmaker and photographer who grew up in an engineering family. She studied at Bristol School of Art before progressing on to the Slade School in London where she developed under the teaching of Henry Tonks from 1907-1910. Her work was often characterised by its serene, still quality, here her landscape captures a forest scene as a poignant documentation of the moment- a fleeting memory, frozen in time. She was predominantly shown in the NEAC as well as the Walker Art Gallery. Emilio Grau Sala studied at the fine arts school in Barcelona, where he became friends with Antoni Clavé. While still very young he began exhibiting at the Humourists Exhibition. In Paris he exhibited at the major annual Salons. He also exhibited at many international group exhibitions and in 1937 received an important award at the Carnegie Foundation International Exhibition in Pittsburgh. He showed collections of his work in many solo exhibitions starting in Barcelona in 1929 and 1930. His first solo exhibition in Paris was in 1937 and he went on to exhibit in Madrid, London, Buenos Aires and New York. After three trips to Paris he finally settled there in 1936.
In Paris he was influenced by the paintings of Marcel Gromaire and especially Julius Pascin. He created theatrical sets and costumes for several plays including The Woman of Easy Virtue ( La Demoiselle de Petite Vertu) by Marcel Achard. He also illustrated many literary works including Madame Bovary by Flaubert, Bel-Ami by Maupassant, Colette's series of four Claudine novels, Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time ( À la Recherche du Temps Perdu), and works by poets including Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du Mal...
