About the Item

This is a very stylized Southwest landscape that appears to document a small church that existed at one time, perhaps in the Palm Springs or Santa Fe area. It is very reminiscent of the WPA period of American art that was favored in the 1930's. A paper label on the reverse suggests that Lily S. Converse may have lived in Cathedral City (Cathedral is the first word of her place of address) and the title of the work is "Little Church on Indian Way". The original price back then was $125. The work is oil on masonite and measures 19" x 22". The charming church seems right at home nestled within and shaded by highly stylized eucalyptus trees. The colors are quite vibrant and the use of light and shadow is very evident on the partially shadowed church front. Likely the church is long gone, succumbing to denser development. The painting is signed lower right "Lily Converse". The painting is housed in its original period frame. it has carved corners and a gold painted finish that compliments the work. The overall framed dimensions are 25" x 28". Both the painting and the frame are in very good condition with no issues to report. On the back of the frame are tacks and tiny remnants of what was likely another exhibition label, now gone. Lily Schierenberg Converse was born in St Petersburg, Russia in 1876. She came to America and settled in Philadelphia. She married John W. Converse. Lily Converse was well trained and had Robert Henri as a teacher in New York. She exhibited often in the Northeast, as well as in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Santa Fe. Converse died in Philadelphia in 1961 and the announcement was posted in the New York Times on September 20 of that year.
