About the Item

Louis-Alexandre CABIE (Dol-de-Bretagne 1853 - Bordeaux 1939) The rock of Cayre-Vézère in Les Eyzies in the summer of 1900 Oil on panel H. 52 cm; L. 36 cm Signed lower right, dated 1900. Located on the back. Provenance: Private collection, Mayenne Louis Cabié, a renowned artist in France and particularly in the Bordeaux region, even during his lifetime, traveled throughout the great southwest throughout his life. A student of Harpignies whose passion for vegetation is found in the manner of the Barbizon school, he transcribed until his death the simplicity of picturesque French landscapes. Spectacular trees, forest atmospheres, places steeped in history, captivating valleys, or even a landscape in its simplest form that will bring out a vital contrast. From 1890, Louis-Alexandre Cabié traveled the banks of the Vézère in all weathers and different seasons. It was in the town of Eyzies in Dordogne that he spent a large part of his time, and where he married his second wife in 1894. Several hundred works were created on the banks of this river, which are for the majority not located today. In 1900, Cabié produced several vertical panels during the summer. This is one of them, created on the left bank of the Vézère, illustrating in the foreground a rock which is still in its place but which the vegetation of the banks increasingly hides: the rock of Cayre-Vézère. In the background, overhanging, the famous cliffs of Périgord overlooking the road called "route du Buisson", for the town of Buisson-de-Cadouin. Do not hesitate to ask us for the iconography of the other paintings representing this place. We are looking for any work or information relating to the artist to complete his biography as well as a catalog raisonné currently being compiled.

Impressionist Barbizon School Oil on Board Landscape, The 'Gorges de la Bourne'
By Georges Guerin
Located in Cotignac, FR
1930s French Impressionist Barbizon School oil on panel view of a river gorge by Georges Guerin (1910-1984). The painting is signed bottom right and also signed top left to the back of the board. The painting is also titled and dated to the back of the board, 'Gorges de la Bourne, Pont en Royans, Aout 1937.' A very charming view of a river passing through a gorge and leading to a sunlit and colourful rocky cliff face. Guerin has achieved a wonderful play between light and shade, bright and sombre colours making it at once classical in interpretation and yet also modern and abstract. His technique of thick impasto technique worked with a brush is especially successful and gives the paintings surface a charming quality. Guerin is noted for his landscapes as well as for his Paris street scenes and views of the Brittany coast. The Gorges de la Bourne or Bourne Gorge is a canyon at the bottom of which flows the River Bourne. It connects Pont-en-Royans to Villard-de-Lans in...
