The son of an English father and a Dutch mother, Harry Leith-Ross was born in the British Colony of Mauritius, an island in the Indian Ocean a thousand miles off the southeast coast of Africa. His first formal art instruction began in England under Stanhope Forbes, followed by studies with Jean Paul Laurens at the Academie Julian in Paris. Leith-Ross came to the United States to enroll at the National Academy of Design in New York City in 1910, and then to Woodstock, in 1913. It was in Woodstock at the Art Students League, under the tutelage of Birge Harrison and John F. Carlson, that Leith-Ross would receive the training that most influenced his career as an artist.

The oil sketch shows a flute-playing man with dark curls sitting at the left edge
of the picture in a recess draped with cloth. In the lower left corner, a fallen
bowl with leaking water can be seen. The right half of the picture shows a circle
of five dancing putti, whereby the left putti can be recognized as a satyr due to
the goat legs. The background is dominated by a dark mountain landscape. In
the sky a rising or setting sun can be guessed. It is possible that the flute player
represents Bacchus, the god of wine and ecstasy. This fits with the flute as a
symbol of celebration, as well as the bowl of water, which could refer to
Bacchus' mother, Lethe. Lethe is a river in the underworld, which at the same
time symbolizes "oblivion". Thus, the spilling water bowl is not only a reference
to this river, but it also symbolizes "oblivion". Moreover, Bacchus is usually
depicted with satyrs in his retinue, which would explain the putto with goat legs.
However, the interpretation of the flute player as the god Pan would be
possible. He is usually shown with his flute and associated with dance.
Moreover, he is native to the mountainous landscape of Arcadia.
The present work is an oil sketch, i.e. a preparatory study. This is suggested by
the partly unfinished parts, as well as the structure of the picture. Some parts
are already almost completely laid out, such as the flute player, while others, for
example the horizon and also the figures of the putti, are only sketched in
outline.
The painting can be attributed to the Baroque painter Thomas Willeboirts
Bosschaert. This attribution was also confirmed by Prof. Hans Vlieghe.
Bosschaert lived and worked in Antwerp with Peter Paul Rubens and Anthonis

The artist:
Born in Warwick in 1901, Duffield came to Bristol at the age of 23 as an artist at the studio of Mardon Son and Hall. He worked as an illustrator producing designs for cigarette cards, remaining with the company for 37 years until his retirement. He was elected an Artist Member of the Bristol Savages in 1946. He was an extremely keen and regular attender not only in the studio but at all other Savage functions. He was noted for his friendly demeanour and seldom seen without a pipe in his mouth. He was a good pianist and would play popular tunes after the Wednesday evenings’ entertainment for members to join in singing and always with his pipe in his mouth. In 1965 he was commissioned by the Gloucester Regiment to paint a portrait of Brigadier Manley Angell James, VC, DSO, MBE, MC, a Bristol man who won his VC during the first World War. The painting is now in the Imperial War Museum. Frank was made a Life Member in 1973 and died in 1982.
Frank Duffiled was a member of the artist group, known as "The Bristol Savages":
Founded in 1894 by Ernest Ehlers, he invited his fellow Bristol based artists to spend a friendly evening in his studio to work and talk. At first, meetings were held in their private studios, then as their numbers grew, in rented premises. By 1904 this led to the official founding of the Bristol Savages and the holding ever since, of similar weekly meetings between October and May each year. In 1905 the first exhibition of paintings was held at the premises of George Nichols & Co., an auctioneer in Broad Street, Bristol. During the next 14 years exhibitions were held annually in Bristol and their first permanent home was Brandon Cottage which was made available to them through the good offices of fellow member James Fuller Eberle. Maria Tort Xirau ( Figueres , 26 May 1924 – 6 June 2018) was a painter and photographic and cinematographic editor from Emporda. She developed a long professional career in leading photographic studios, in films for The Walt Disney Company and also in advertising claims for companies such as Educa Borràs . The second half of her life was dedicated to painting, exercising a luminous, varied and nostalgic chromatic style in the techniques of oil and watercolor and with exhibitions of her work in Barcelona and Figueres. The Biographical Dictionary of Art Empordà defined Tort Xirau's work as "a painting that is characterized by the strength of the strokes, the vividness and brightness of the chromatic range and exudes mastery of the photographic technique. A mixture of nostalgia and tenderness is evident.".
Tort Xirau's paintings were exhibited in the two towns where she spent her life: in 1992 she exhibited his work at the Caixa de Figueres Exhibition Hall. Two years later, she did it at Sala Conex in Barcelona and in 2007 and 2013 the Consortium of Sant Ferran Castle and the Figueres Town Council organized tribute exhibitions. In 2013, she ceded to the council of the city of Figueres her work Mercat de la plaça de l'Ajuntament , watercolored on paper around 1991, which is exhibited in the rest room of the building.
