John Bond Francisco was born in Cincinnati, OH on Dec. 14, 1863. From an early age Francisco was drawn to both music and art. He studied the violin with Hermann Eckhardt and painting at the Cincinnati Art Academy for several years.
He arrived in Los Angeles in 1887 and was so taken with the beauty of the place, he opted to make it his home. He soon continued his studies in Berlin, Munich, and in Paris at Académies Julian and Colarossi under Courtois, Bouguereau, and Robert-Fleury. While in Europe he studied the violin in the morning hours and painting in the afternoon.
Upon returning to Los Angeles in 1892, he married and built a home at 1401 Albany Street where he lived for the rest of his life. Combining an art and music career, he helped form the Los Angeles Symphony Orchestra in 1897 and served as their first concert master. While teaching music and art at his studio, he made painting excursions into the surrounding countryside, often with his pupil Elmer Wachtel. He combined his Munich technique with that of the Barbizon's influence to produce paintings of California deserts and mountains that held dramatic light and shade contrasts. Later his palette brightened and he leaned more toward Impressionism.
Francisco's studio in the Blanchard Bldg and his home were a mecca for both painters and musicians until his death on Jan. 8, 1931.

For many years Warren Eliphalet Rollins was known as the "Dean of the Santa Fe art colony." He was the first artist to have a formal exhibition there; it was held in 1906 in the old Palace of the Governors. He was a close friend of Carlos Vierra, Gerald Cassidy, Kenneth Chapman, Sheldon Parsons and most of the other famous artists who assembled in the New Mexican capital during the first half of this century.
Born in Carson City, Nevada, Rollins was raised in California and attended the San Francisco School of Design where he studied under Virgil Williams. At the completion of his studies, he was awarded the Avery Gold Medal and made Assistant Director of the school. Following his marriage in 1887, he and his wife settled in San Diego, and it was during this period that Rollins became interested in the Indian as subject matter. In search of material, Rollins, his wife, and their two daughters, Ramona and Ruth, traveled through every Western state from the Mexican to the Canadian borders. This painting, by Christian Berg (1893-1976) is quite interesting and unusual for his works. It is signed "Ch. Berg" and dated 1918. Berg is mostly famous for his sculptures which was to become his signum works later in his life. He is known primarily for his abstract artworks. He was educated at the Technical School and Althin's painting school in Stockholm 1911–1914. Painter, teacher and writer, Philip Leslie Hale is recognized for his decorative paintings of the female figure and for his interior scenes with figures as well as for his progressive approach to painting. However, his career went through several phases that included sporting scenes, figural studies of women including nudes, portraits, and allegorical works reflecting the overwhelming forces of nature.
Of the Boston painters of his time, he seemed the most fully committed to Impressionism, and his technique suggests the influence of French impressionist Edgar Degas. In most of his paintings, the landscape was more important than the figure.
He was a prolific writer in local newspapers and periodicals about the contemporary art scene, discussing the work of his Boston colleagues. He also wrote numerous books on art and art history including a study of Vermeer that was published in 1913. Among his writings are 1892 newspaper columns for Arcadia Magazine titled "Letters from Paris", art criticism for the Boston Herald from 1905 to 1909; and art criticism for the Boston Evening Transcript. He argued for the Boston School of Art as led by Edmund Tarbell whose style was based on Impressionism with elements of Realism, especially figure painting.
Hale was born in Boston in 1865, the son Reverend Edward Hale, a Boston clergyman and a relative of Nathan Hale. He studied with Ellen Day Hale, his sister, and Edmund Tarbell at the Boston Museum School, with J. Alden Weir at the Art Students League in New York City, and then went to Paris for further studies at the Academie Julian and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He remained in France for fifteen years, returning to America about 1895. During that time, from 1888, he spent summers at Giverny, France with his good friend, artist, Theodore Butler, and became well acquainted with Claude Monet. Traveling throughout Europe, Hale visited the major museums, and copied the works of Ingres, Vermeer, Watteau and Michelangelo.

Richards' and 'Phil Hips' - the location is usually inscribed on the reverse. The watercolors are often coastal scenes with boats and figures on a shore, painted in a more traditional Victorian style, and possibly pre-date the oils. F. E. Jamiesons's beach scenes were published as postcards around 1920 by G. Ajelli & Co. of London on a textured card to give the appearance of oils.

Daughter of a pastor from Gard and an English woman, Alice Bastide grew up in Paris. A pupil of the Jullian Academy, she began her apprenticeship under the guidance of Henri Royer and François Schommer. The development of his art is mainly oriented towards still lifes, without completely abandoning portraits and landscapes. Her other specialty for which she received numerous awards is miniatures. At the Salon of 1914 she received the Maxime David prize crowning the best piece while her finesse was already noticed by press critics from 1907. Coronation, in 1926 she received a gold medal at the Salon for her miniature Coquetterie. In 1896, the young woman married a man from Gard, Auguste Massebiaux, whose name she would occasionally bear. The latter, a lawyer at the Paris Court of Appeal, died in 1910. The couple had no children. At that time she was domiciled at 48 avenue d'Orléans (later named avenue du general Leclerc) in Paris where she lived until her death in 1959. Until the mid-1930s she continued to exhibit at the Salon des Artistes French with a manner very close to Impressionism, luminous and vigorous. In 1912, two years after the death of her husband, Alice Bastide was certainly still marked by the sadness of her mourning. The tones of our portrait of a little girl and the frame she puts together are dark and heavy. Signed figurative pastel on canvas circa 1910 by French genre painter Pierre Carrier-Belleuse. The work depicts three ballerinas wearing white tutus, warming up in a studio. Carrier-Belleuse was a contemporary of Edgar Degas and they exhibited simultaneously at the major Salons in Paris. This classic example evokes the Belle Epoque period in french history and is superbly executed.

Pierre Carrier-Belleuse studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Alexandre Cabanel and the interior decorative artist Pierre Victor Galland. He started out as an oil painter and produced genre compositions, such as his Final Rendezvous. From 1885, however, he opted to work exclusively in pastel, producing a large number of sketches and portraits but always remaining faithful to his earlier genre compositions. Examples include Pierrot, Harlequin, Woman with Cat. The periodical Figaro Illustré published a large number of his sketches of dancers, a recurrent theme throughout his work.
From 1875, Pierre Carrier-Belleuse exhibited frequently at the Paris Salon, receiving an honourable mention in 1887 and being awarded a silver medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1889.
