About the Artist:
Brought to New York City in 1850, William Keith was apprenticed to a wood engraver in 1856 working for "Harper's" magazine. In 1858 (or 1859) he visited California for "Harper's" and then after a trip to Great Britain, settled in California as an engraver in 1862. He began exhibiting paintings in 1864 in San Francisco where he opened his studio, after having been taught painting by his wife.

Up for sale is very rare unique Antique 19-century original oil painting on metal plate depicting a carriage ride by famous Russian Artist of His Imperial Majesty Alexander II - Adolf Jossifowitsch Charlemagne (1826-1901).
Signed Ad. Charlemagne and dated 1864 on the lower left.
The painting is in good/antique condition.

Adolf Jossifowitsch Charlemagne *1826-1901) was a famous Russian Artist awarded the title of Artist of His Imperial Majesty Alexander II. He was awarded several silver and gold medals by Imperial Academy of Arts.

Adolphe Josefovich Charlemagne was born in St. Petersburg in 1826, and is the younger brother of the artist Josef Josefovich Charlemagne. Like his sibling, he studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts from 1848, where he studied historic painting under Feodor Antonovich Bruni, 1799 to 1875, and battle painting with Bogdan Pavlovich Villevalde, 1818 to 1903. He spent the majority of his career working on official commissions which recorded the major events in the reign of Alexander II, and in 1875 was awarded the title of Artist of His Imperial Majesty. Born in Modena, Italy, Eugenio Zampighi entered the local Academy of Design at 13. He eventually became one of the most decorated students, and in 1869, he was awarded a scholarship and spent the next three years in Rome. By 1884, having settled in Florence, he had begun to paint the genre works that eventually placed him with the leading artist’s of Italy.

"Upper Sacramento River, California" (Large Antique Landscape, Renowned Artist)
Located in New Orleans, LA
This very large, superb California landscape was painted by an artist celebrated for his California and Pacific Northwest scenes, and well-known among collectors of these works. Frederick Schafer (bio below) emigrated from Germany to the U.S. in 1876 at the age of 37. He traveled widely through the west and captured dramatic nature scenes such as this one, depicting the Upper Sacramento river with its towering trees. His paintings are in many superb institutional and private collections around the world. Paintings by Schafer in this size range have brought from $15,000 to $26,000 recently at auction, which is wholesale pricing (see photos) so we feel ours is a fair price. The painting measures an impressive 65" x 44.5" in its ornate gold wooden frame; the canvas size is 50" x 30".
