Reflections at Dawn, Figurative original painting by Tetiana Pchelnykova
Located in Zofingen, AG
"Reflections at Dawn" is the latest contemplative addition to my "Thoughts" series. This triptych, measuring 100x60 cm, is crafted with acrylic paints on canvas, enhanced with oil pastel techniques, embodying my ongoing exploration into the depths of the feminine soul and its interplay with the universe.
The painting portrays a young woman seated in the forest, symbolizing reflection and introspection. Her nude form speaks to vulnerability and a readiness to open her heart to the world. Engrossed in her thoughts, she may be recalling the past or dreaming of the future, her musings remaining untold.
Adorning her shoulder is a Scythian-era symbol of the universe and the sun, a reminder that we are all part of something larger and an infinite cycle of life. The sunflowers and poppies leaning over her are taken from traditional Ukrainian ornaments, carrying the symbolism of the sun, blood, and rebirth.
This work reflects on how femininity is intertwined with nature and cultural symbols passed down through generations. It represents my search for profound meanings and connection with antiquity while highlighting the significance of the female experience in the contemporary world.
"Reflections at Dawn" is more than a piece of art; it is a personal symbolic journey towards understanding the essence of existence.

Slumbering Spirit, Figurative original painting by Tetiana Pchelnykova
Located in Zofingen, AG
In the serene stillness of "Slumbering Spirit," part of my contemplative "Thoughts" series, I explore the profound quietude of rest. The painting captures a woman in repose, the very image of tranquility as she lies beneath the delicate branches of a young apple tree, her sleep undisturbed by the world's whispers.
The ancient symbols etched upon her shoulder speak of "spirit," hinting at the unseen energy that animates us all, even in our most restful moments. This slumbering form is a sanctuary of peace, her dreams a hidden realm where the spirit roams free.
Above her, the apple branches bow gently, a nod to the biblical Eve's apple, symbolizing knowledge, temptation, and the duality of innocence and awareness. It is a fruit laden with the weight of history, yet here it is presented anew, in a light untainted by the past's shadows.
This work is an invitation to pause, to reflect on the spirit within and the nature that surrounds us, to find the sacred in the everyday. "Slumbering Spirit" is a celebration of the inner quiet that nourishes the soul and a recognition of the profound narratives that sleep can tell.

Seated Nude Woman American Impressionist School 1940s by Fred Yost
Located in Soquel, CA
Seated Nude Woman American Figurative School 1940s
Mid-century American impressionist painting of a woman by American artist Frederick "Fred" Yost (American/Swiss, 1888-1968). He studied: at Mt. Union Col., Alliance, OH; American Students League, New York, and with Homer Boss, John Sloan, Robert Henri, R. Lahey. The painting gleans much form his studies with John Sloan and Robert Henri in the French post-impressionist style.

About Fred's life: by Hal Fry of the Herald
“Fred Does Whatever He Likes” was a title given to a biography
written about Fred Yost by Hal Fry of the Herald. The following is
taken directly from this column: “Fred Yost’s living style is like his
painting style. He has fun with it. Fred John Yost was born in
Switzerland, he’ sure, on November 6, 1889, he thinks.
His father John brought the family to his country when Fred was
about a year old—first to New York and later to
Canton, Sebring and finally Alliance, where Yost Sr.
loaded freight for a railroad. Fred like drawing and painting
so far back he can’t remember how or when it started—it was
always that way. But through the public schools in Alliance
he didn’t think of this as a career possibility. He wanted to be a
newspaperman. He worked his way through Mt. Union College,
finishing, he thinks, about 1912. Then he beat it for New York and
after kicking around for a time got a job as a proofreader for the
Wall Street Journal. He combined this and art school until
World War I took him into the Army. In infantry, field artillery and
ordnance duties he served with the 27th New York Division
through St. Mihiel and the Argonne and the rest—in the process
getting his hearing clobbered by blasts from his outfit’s own guns.
Coming out a Sergeant in 1919, he went back to the
Wall Street Journal briefly—then caught on as a staff artist for the
(New York) Herald. For several years, when he felt like it,
Yost would take a bus to the Mexican border and switch to a
Mexican bus to carry him way down south, then make it any way
he could to the places he wanted to see. On these trips he
virtually becomes a peon, disappearing totally from those who
know him—living with, like and clearly thoroughly liked by the
people among whom he moves.” Yost was a graduate of the
Art Students League and past president of the Ohio Watercolor
Society. Fred Yost, a man who eminently loved the Mexican
landscape,

Help is Coming
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
This striking artwork captures the essence of a shirtless young man in a moment of profound contemplation. His gaze, both pained and optimistic, fixated upon an unseen horizon, offers a captivating entry point into the complex emotional narrative that underlies the piece.
Salaudeen's use of color is masterful, drawing viewers' eyes immediately to the central figure. The young man's skin is rendered in a palette of subtle, earthy tones, emphasizing his vulnerability and humanity. The absence of a shirt lays bare his raw emotions and exposes the vulnerability we all share when facing adversity.
However, it is the juxtaposition of the man's countenance that truly captivates the viewer. The artist has masterfully crafted an expression that is simultaneously heavy with the weight of the world and imbued with an undeniable glimmer of hope. The furrowed brow and furrowed lips are etched with the lines of a thousand struggles, yet his eyes betray a flicker of optimism. This duality is what makes "Help is Coming" so compelling; it encapsulates the human experience of confronting adversity, where pain and hope often intermingle in the most profound ways.
The title, "Help is Coming," adds depth to the narrative woven into the piece. It suggests that, despite the pain etched onto the young man's face, there is a belief in a brighter future, a conviction that support and relief are on the horizon. This message resonates with viewers on a universal level, serving as a reminder that even in the darkest moments, there is the potential for change and improvement.
Salaudeen's technique also deserves special mention. His meticulous attention to detail is evident in the fine lines and textures that make the young man's skin seem almost tangible. The background, although abstract and dreamlike, subtly hints at the broader context of the man's struggles, inviting viewers to interpret the piece through their own experiences and perspectives.
"Help is Coming" is more than just a static image; it is a visual poem that speaks to the shared human experience of pain, resilience, and hope. It encourages us to reflect on our own journeys, reminding us that, no matter how daunting the challenges we face, there is always the potential for relief and redemption.
In a world often filled with chaos and uncertainty, art has the power to provide solace and inspiration. Abdulateef Salaudeen...

James Roy Hopkins (1877-1969) was born in the rural farming community of Irwin, Ohio in 1877. His mother, Nettie Hopkins, painted with watercolors recreationally and encouraged her son’s artistic interests. Though he shared his mother's love of art, Hopkins initially entered Ohio State University in 1896 to study electrical engineering. However, he soon left and briefly enrolled in the Columbus School of Art before going to the Art Academy of Cincinnati where he studied with Frank Duveneck. In 1900, Hopkins moved to New York City and worked as a medical textbook illustrator. Two years later he made the pilgrimage to the art center of the western world at the time, Paris, France.
While in Paris he improved his craft at the Académie Colarossi. Hopkins embraced Parisian life and socialized with and visited the studios of such great artists as Pierre...

Le Martyr de Saint Sebastian (Academic Figurative Oil Painting in Gold Frame)
By Mark Beard
Located in Hudson, NY
Academic style figurative oil painting on canvas
48 x 24 inches unframed
58 x 32 x 3 inches in gold leaf wood frame
This vertical, contemporary figurative painting of Le Martyr de Saint Sebastian was made by Mark Beard under his fictitious artistic persona, Hippolyte-Alexandre Michallon. Painted in a modern Academic style, Beard paints this Christian saint with dramatic detail and emotional gravity. The scene is a common artistic depiction of Sebastian who according to traditional belief, was killed during the Roman emperor Diocletian's persecution of the Christians.
Here the artist depicts a nearly nude Saint Sebastian standing stoically while tied to a rustic brown post. A lush green forested terrain decorates the background while a white neo-classical building sits in the distance, which is perhaps the tomb where Saint Sebastian's remains were laid to rest. Saint Sebastian's pale blue-grey, stone-like stone tone is characteristic of Mark Beard's work who often portrays muscular young men similarly to Greek statues.
The vertical Academic style figurative oil painting is complimented with a vintage style gold leaf wood frame. The painting is signed 'H. A. Michallon 1872' in red oil paint in the lower right corner. The gold frame is also signed and inscribed with black oil paint in several places (please see images).
Mark Beard is a contemporary artist who made this work under the pseudonym Hippolyte A. Michallon who painted during the late 1800's so slight wear (see images) is intentionally staged to align with the factitious artist's purposed history.
About the artist:
Mark Beard is perhaps the most literal example of an artist pulled in so many different directions that he chose to “invent” six different personae in which to channel his overflowing energy and need for expression. Each painting style is radically different from the next, so it remains entirely believable that the work could stem from six completely different people of different time periods and different schools of thought. With a background in set design, Beard has always been one who could conjure total magic with anything available. Mark Beard has exhibited with Carrie Haddad Gallery for nearly twenty years and there has never been a dull moment.
Mark Beard, born in 1956 in Salt Lake city, now lives in New York City. His works are in museum collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City; the Museum of Modern Art, New York City; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York City; the Boston Museum of Fine Arts; and the Harvard, Yale, and Princeton University Art Museums; among many others. We would not be the least bit surprised to see new ‘personas’ emerge in the coming years.
About: Hippolyte - Alexandre Michallon, 1849 -1930
The long and peripatetic artistic career of Hippolyte-Alexandre Michallon began in a conventional fashion. The only son of prosperous bourgeois parents in Tours, he first studied drawing with his mother, an accomplished amateur painter of insects. His father, an undertaker who appreciated his son's talent and supported his ambition to become a painter, sent him to Paris at age sixteen to enroll in the studio of Francois-Edouard Picot (1786-1868), an eminent history painter and professor at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, with whom he studied for three years, until Picot's death. Under his aging teacher's guidance and tutelage, Michallon entered the preliminary stages of the Prix de Rome contest at the Ecole three times, winning an Honorable Mention in 1869 for his composition entitled The Solider of the Marathon.
For the next twenty years Michallon regualarly exhibited paintings on historical and biblical themes at the Paris Salon, as well as commissioned portraits. By his own account, the most ambitious work of Michallon's career was a thirty-foot canvas depicting Noah's Ark, which he exhibited in the Salon in 1875. Michallon began painting atmospheric but zoologically correct images of exotic animals in the wild. These achieved a certain popularity among French and foreign collectors alike, providing Michallon with financial security for the first time in his career.
Michallon moved to England in 1893. His outstanding technical skills easily earned him a position on the faculty of the Slade School of Art in 1900. The craze for animal paintings proved short-lived. He continued to teach at Slade for the next two decades, but his classes gradually dwindled in size as the academic approach and methods he espoused went from outmoded to downright unpopular. Finally in 1922, finding himself reduced to a single pupil, the talented young American Bruce Sargeant, he retired from Slade, persuading Sargeant to leave with him and undergo private instruction at home.
Several years later he retired to a cottage at St. Ives, Cornwall, where he lived quietly until his death in 1930, forgotten by all but a few former students, among them Edith Thayer Cromwell...

Literature:
Donato Sanminiatelli, Domenico Beccafumi. Milan 1967, p. 170 (under paintings attributed to Beccafumi)
Among the precious survivors of Renaissance secular paintings for domestic interiors are several unusual and particularly attractive panels painted in Siena at the end of the fifteenth and beginning of the sixteenth centuries. These paintings depict exemplary figures from antiquity—heroes or heroines, as well as allegorical, literary, and mythological figures. For the most part, these panels have survived in groups of three, although it is possible that some of these works were painted either as part of larger series or as individual projects. One such trio by Beccafumi consists of two paintings now at the National Gallery, London (Marcia and Tanaquil) and a third in the Galleria Doria-Pamphilj, Rome (Cornelia). These were commissioned around 1517–1519 for the bedroom of Francesco di Camillo Petrucci in Siena and were most likely placed together as elements in the wall decoration (spalliere) or installed above the back of a bench or cassapanca. Another, earlier (ca. 1495–1500), set of three—Guidoccio Cozzarelli’s Hippo, Camilla, and Lucretia (Private Collection, Siena) survives with its original wooden framework—a kind of secular triptych. Judith, Sophonisba, and Cleopatra in the collection of the Monte dei Paschi, Siena, are by an anonymous artist close to Beccafumi called the “Master of the Chigi-Saracini Heroines.” Girolamo di Benvenuto’s Cleopatra, Tuccia, and Portia are dispersed (homeless, Prague, Chambery), and Brescianino’s Faith, Hope, and Charity are in the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Siena.
The present painting first appeared in the Spinelli sale in Florence in 1934, at which time it was sold with two panels of identical size and format. Each was catalogued as being by the “manner of Baldassare Peruzzi” and of unidentified subject. Of these, the painting depicting a male figure turned to the right has recently reappeared in a private Italian collection, while the location of the third work, portraying a cloaked figure turned three-quarters left, remains unknown. Our panel depicts the allegorical figure of Fortune. Here she is represented in typical fashion as a nude female figure balanced on a wheel (sometimes called the Rota Fortunae), her billowing drapery indicating that she is as changeable as the wind. The appearance of the Virgin and Child in the cloud at the upper right is an unusual addition to the iconography. The subjects of the two pendant male...

Walter Strobl opens a new chapter in his explorations of the neverending tension between stillness and movement. Strobl´s vibrant nudes capture women in movement: they are there and gone again, letting the pictoral space pulsate with both the presence and absence of the outlines of their bodies. He paints women with a keen interest in the lived experience of the body, avoiding clichees in his depictions. The viewer is excluded from this inner sensation, but it is precisely the privacy of the model`s slumber that permits us to revel in our own proprioception. His cityscapes and still lives tell their...

Study for the Spring (preparatory to the Four Seasons) by René-Marie Castaing
Located in PARIS, FR
René-Paris Castaing, winner of the Grand Prix de Rome in 1924, left a large body of work, both sacred and secular. Many churches in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, in South-West France still bear witness to the diversity of his talent. In 1942, he began a major decoration project for the Château de Diusse, in the north-east of the county, including an allegory of the four seasons. The vigorous pastel we are presenting here is a study for Spring, depicted as Flore undressing. This commission was a veritable swan song for the artist, who died a year later at the age of 47.
1. René-Marie Castaing, the great inter-war painter in Pau
René-Marie Castaing was born in Pau on December 16th 1896. His father, Joseph Castaing, was also a painter: he was the official portraitist of Pau's high society, which was particularly cosmopolitan at the end of the century, when many rich foreigners spent the winter in Pau, taking advantage of the mild weather to enjoy an outdoor lifestyle punctuated by hunting, horse ridings and golf.
René-Marie Castaing was admitted to the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in April 1920 and entered the studio of Paul-Albert Laurens (1870-1934). In 1924, he was awarded the First Grand Prix de Rome for Painting, which earned him a stay at the Villa Médicis for more than three years. He then returned to Pau in 1928, where he lived until his death.
Castaing's work is marked by the academic tradition, in which drawing plays as important a role as painting. Although his drawings are often sketches that help to set up large painted compositions, they stand as independent artworks in which the artist fully expresses the vivacity of his talent.
Castaing was a fervent Christian and religious painting played an essential part in his work, as shown by the decorations he created for the churches of Bizanos, Borce, Bidache and Salies-de-Béarn. The painter also created several secular decorations, such as that for the dining room of the Villa Saint-Basil's in Pau in 1935, and the Hunting at the Albret’s time commissioned in 1940 by the Prefecture of Pau. The décor created in 1942-1943 for the Château de Diusse, a mansion located north-east of Pau, was his last large-scale décor, as the painter died shortly after its completion on December 8th 1943.
2. Description of the drawing
Our pastel depicts an eminently secular theme: Spring is embodied by Flore, crouching on the ground with one knee touching the ground. She reveals her ample bosom by removing her shirt, her arms raised above her shoulders to undress.
Given Castaing's classical training at the Beaux-Arts and the influence of ancient statuary...
