Originally created as part of Nicholas' solo exhibition "This, and Thereafter (Plumes)," December 10, 2022 - January 7, 2023. The theme illustrated the enigmatic uncertainty around what might happen after life. A range of paintings were presented – vibrant and ethereal – touching on different aspects of this notion. Each painting had a different point of view, oftentimes focusing around the inevitability of what is to come, and if and how it influences the present.
This particular piece centers around personal legacy, how you will be remembered, and how your life vanishes into an abstraction as time goes by. This notion is visualized with a bust set in stone. The technique Evans used was a mixing of water-based ink with a hint of pink, that he knew would react when overlaid with white acrylic, pulling out a lighter hue of the pink ink. The white silhouette of a portrait set in stone creates a ghostly continuation of the underlaid pattern.

This fascinating portrait, portraying a full-length gentleman and datable to the 17th century, illustrates the stylistic and compositional details typical of the pictorial production of the Lombardy area, Bergamo in particular. This reference is reflected in elements such as the natural light, the sober and austere setting and, above all, the subtle psychological characterisation of the face.
We are inclined to identify the hand of portrait painter Carlo Ceresa, one of the most illustrious Bergamasque figure painters of the 17th century, capable of developing a style of intense realism and acute psychological investigation. In his works, and our portrait perfectly reflects his canons, an extraordinary naturalistic imprint, great realism and remarkable essentiality are evident.
Those traits of severity, moral rigour and austerity typical of his portraiture find a perfect balance here: never courtly or rhetorical, his portraits are profoundly linked to the concept of counter-reform. Immortalising the main personalities of the time, he established himself as a point of reference for the Bergamasque aristocracy, from the Vertova to the Pesenti to the Secco Suardo.
The subject of the portrait is Giacomo Pesenti, here immortalised life-size in a rigorous black suit, his left hand resting on a table, on which is placed the necessities for writing and a manuscript, and his right hand, with a sealed ring on his little finger, abandoned along his side while he holds his gloves.
He wears a suit of incredible rigour, dressed as befits a man of his high social standing, while the sharp light focuses on his face, with an intensity that seems to be accentuated by the reflection of the white collar, with its sharp profile.
For Ceresa, it is not the richness of the garment that gives value to the person portrayed, it is the need to give feeling and bring out the character of the person, and this he succeeds in marvellously, aided by his ability to capture the essence of the person and return it to us in painting through the face and light used as a strong expressive element.

This absolutely lovely British Victorian oil painting is by noted Birmingham born artist James John Hill and has some excellent provenance below. The painting actually stayed in Birmingham for many years, hanging in Heathfield Hall, the former residence of inventor and engineer James Watt, but owned at that time by Thomas Pemberton. It then moved to Berwick House in Shropshire. Entitled The Gleaner and painted in1863, it is a charming half length portrait of a young woman with a sheaf of wheat under her arm. She is stood beneath trees and the wheat field is beyond. She is dressed in a lovely pink garment and wearing a brown felt hat, to shade her face from the sun, her dark hair cascading down her shoulder, The hat is decorated with a poppy. The soft tones and sympathetic rendering of the young woman make this a stunning 19th century oil painting with excellent provenance.
The painting is housed in its original gilt frame with a beautiful oak leaf motif.
Signed and dated 1863 lower left.
Provenance. Thomas Pemberton, Heathfield Hall, Handsworth, Birmingham.
(Heathfield Hall was the former residence of the inventor and engineer James Watt. Following his death the house had several occupiers including local luminaries Thomas Pemberton and George Tangye).
His sale, Christie's, 30 April 1874, lot 95 (69gns to James Watson) Berwick House, Shropshire.

The artwork serves as a cautionary tale, reminding us that unchecked negativity can erode our self-confidence and well-being. This juxtaposition underscores the importance of cultivating a conscious and compassionate inner dialogue.
"Ocean of Conversations, I Wonder What Speaks Beneath" stands as a mirror reflecting our own inner landscapes. Born in Milan, Italy Lupetti studied at the Royal Academy in Rome where he received classical training and was apprenticed to the school of restoration at the Vatican. At the age of fourteen he was accepted to attend Brera Liceo Artistico, one of the most prestigious art academies in Italy, graduating at age eighteen and then went on to win honors from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Rome eventually receiving the degree of Professor of Fine Arts. In Milan, he helped restore the famed La Scala Opera House, and in Rome he earned the right to help in the restoration of the Masters' Works in the Vatican's Sistine Chapel. Following service in WWII, Roberto came to America sponsored by the famous conductor Arturo Toscanini. A painting he did of the maestro was purchased by the San Francisco Art Commission. He moved to San Francisco where he taught at the Art Institute.
