Realist Still-life Paintings

REALIST STYLE

Realist art attempts to portray its subject matter without artifice. Similar to naturalism, authentic realist paintings and prints see an integration of true-to-life colors, meticulous detail and linear perspectives for accurate portrayals of the world.

Work that involves illusionistic techniques of realism dates back to the classical world, such as the deceptive trompe l’oeil used since ancient Greece. Art like this became especially popular in the 17th century when Dutch artists like Evert Collier painted objects that appeared real enough to touch. Realism as an artistic movement, however, usually refers to 19th-century French realist artists such as Honoré Daumier exploring social and political issues in biting lithographic prints, while the likes of Gustave Courbet and Jean-François Millet painting people — particularly the working class — with all their imperfections, navigating everyday urban life. This was a response to the dominant academic art tradition that favored grand paintings of myth and history.

By the turn of the 20th century, European artists, such as the Pre-Raphaelites, were experimenting with nearly photographic realism in their work, as seen in the attention to every botanical attribute of the flowers surrounding the drowned Ophelia painted by English artist John Everett Millais.

Although abstraction was the guiding style of 20th-century art, the realism trend in American modern art endured in Edward Hopper, Andrew Wyeth and other artists’ depictions of the complexities of the human experience. In the late 1960s, Photorealism emerged with artists like Chuck Close and Richard Estes giving their paintings the precision of a frame of film.

Contemporary artists such as Jordan Casteel, LaToya Ruby Frazier and Aliza Nisenbaum are now using the unvarnished realist approach for honest representations of people and their worlds. Alongside traditional mediums, technology such as virtual reality, artificial intelligence and immersive installations are helping artists create new sensations of realism in art.

Sonoma Coast
Located in Burlingame, CA
Warm sand and blue surf featured in this California coastline scene with distant rolling hills. 'Sonoma Coast', oil painting on canvas by Willard Dixon, who is one of the finest American contemporary realist painters today. Dixon has painted coastal landscapes for 35 years, capturing the undeniable beauty of the West with its grand and humble spirit. The same sensitivity can be found in his urban street scenes that offer viewers a resting place to contemplate our rapidly changing world, and his portraiture, which largely focuses on his artist friends and illustrious colleagues. Willard Dixon’s work can be found in numerous distinctive private and public collections, as well as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMoMA), the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Oakland Museum of California. Dixon's work is collected worldwide. 'Sonoma Coast' is 36 x 56 inches. Oil on canvas. It is traditionally framed in thin, minimal natural oak with an outer dimension of 37 x 57 inches. Artist signed and dated. Condition is excellent / as new. Painted in late 2020. From Andra Norris Gallery in California. "The Genesis of Femininity" Oil Painting
Located in Denver, CO
Kelly Birkenruth's (US based) "The Genesis of Femininity" is an original, handmade oil painting that depicts a still life of two green granny smith apples and a halved egg shell in situ with a smaller than life bronze statue of a feminine figure. Kelly Birkenruth’s captivating paintings are in the style of contemporary realism while staying firmly grounded in the tradition of the Old Masters. She is able to pull the viewer into her paintings by interweaving emotion with a humanistic quality through her supreme handling of light. Through her portraits and still lifes she is able to evoke sensitivity and empathy, which in turn allows her to create images which transcend mere representation to capture the true essence of her subject. Kelly’s arresting compositions, draftsmanship, use of color and observation of detail allow her to create paintings with a timeless quality. After earning her degree from Pennsylvania State University, Kelly moved to southern California where she began a career as a fashion model. Her agency soon sent her abroad to Paris and Tokyo, where she spent the next several years modeling. When she wasn’t walking the runway, she spent endless hours in the great museums of the world, closely observing and studying the works of the Old Masters. “My time abroad, particularly in Paris, opened my eyes to the vast beauty and power of a great painting. After that I knew I wanted to dedicate my life to the pursuit of Fine Art” said Birkenruth. After returning to the States, Kelly studied at Otis College of Art in Los Angeles, CA. She then continued her studies through workshops and private study with renowned artists such as Daniel Sprick, Steven Assael and Jesus Emmanuel Villarreal. In the spring of 2019...

Joie de Vivre by Ginny Williams Europeany Goldfinch Oil Painting
Located in Atlanta, GA
A celebration of charm and cultural richness, Joie de Vivre by Ginny Williams brings together objects of beauty and a striking European Goldfinch, perched with poise and personality. Painted in oil on a 16 x 16-inch panel, this still life exudes warmth, elegance, and a touch of whimsy. The bird’s vivid red face, golden wing bars, and black markings are hallmarks of the beloved goldfinch—often associated with vitality, joy, and spiritual endurance in European art history. With its palette of soft neutrals, classic chinoiserie blue-and-white ceramics, and a bold red, white, and blue fan motif, Joie de Vivre feels both traditional and refreshingly modern. The title, meaning “joy of living,” perfectly encapsulates the mood: uplifting, timeless, and thoughtfully composed. Ideal for collectors of symbolic still life, bird lovers, or designers seeking a small yet story-rich piece, this original painting adds layers of narrative and charm to any space. Offered by Huff Harrington, Joie de Vivre is a radiant moment of visual poetry. We were immediately drawn to the thoughtfully painted work, the clever titles and the rich, deep hues. And when we got to know the artist, we were equally charmed by her delightful wit, her sensibilities as an artist, her depth of knowledge and her modesty. This one’s got it all and we are honored to represent her. GC Williams has a BA in art history and began her artistic career as a self-taught artist. She subsequently studied at several classical ateliers including 4 years at the Academy of Realist Art, Boston. Influenced heavily by her studies of and love for the art of the northern European Renaissance, she creates still life paintings that employ chiaroscuro and symbolism to point beyond themselves to more enduring truths. Just as the still life masters of long ago used everyday objects to convey timeless messages pertinent to the culture of the day, Williams’ works often have underlying symbolism in the placement and combination of objects she chooses to paint. With tight renderings and playfulness she attempts to draw the viewer beyond an initial appreciation of a pretty picture into a deeper engagement and understanding of the language of the still life. Ginny Williams painting European Goldfinch art red and yellow bird painting...

Berry's Bay (20.11.18) - Large Original Maritime Boat Oil Painting on Canvas
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This original coastal painting by Sally West features textured impasto boats floating in a serene blue harbor, making it a perfect choice for collectors seeking contemporary seascape art with nautical charm. Using her signature palette knife technique, West captures the peaceful rhythm of boats bobbing on still waters with thick, expressive strokes and a soft, sunlit palette. The composition evokes a sense of quiet leisure and breezy summer afternoons, offering a tranquil escape through layered oil textures and minimalistic detail. What makes Sally West’s original oil paintings so recognizable is the combination of texture, abstraction, and calming colors. The movement of her paint strokes on canvas is reminiscent of a light breeze or waves. Each painting is completed in one day, with the date present in the title. West's textural pieces take at least eight weeks to completely dry. Once dry, the thick paint takes on an almost sculptural effect. Overall, West’s color palette is uniquely her own, conveying a very specific feeling of comfort associated with familiarity and softness. This large, one-of-a-kind 39-inch high by 59-inch wide artwork is painted with thick, textural oil paint on canvas. It is wired and ready to hang. It is signed by the artist on the front lower right corner as well as the back. The sides of this artwork are painted, and it is ready to hang. Free local Los Angeles area delivery. Affordable Continental U.S. and worldwide shipping are available. A certificate of authenticity issued by Artplex Gallery is included. Sally West was born in West Wyalong, Central New South Wales. West grew up on a farm and, as a teenager, moved to Eastern Sydney for school. Throughout her life, she has traveled through and lived in both Europe and South East Asia to gain inspiration for her artwork. Although her international journeys have influenced her style, the subjects of her paintings are very close to home. The subjects of all of her paintings exist in an infinite timeline inspired by her location in Eastern Australia. Since West’s first breakthrough solo exhibition in New York in 2011, her artworks have become highly sought after internationally. She has won and placed as a finalist in numerous worldwide art competitions and juried exhibitions throughout her career. Her artworks are exhibited in influential galleries across Australia and the USA and are included in significant art collections around the globe. Artplex Gallery has been representing and exhibiting Sally West's original artworks since 2019. Artspace Warehouse, a partner gallery of Artplex Gallery, has been a 1stdibs partner since 2014 with consistently excellent reviews from clients worldwide. "DUCK HUNT" MERGANSERS, DUCK CALL, SHOTGUN DATED 1889 FRAME 43 X 35 NEWCOMB
Located in San Antonio, TX
Edward Chalmers Leavitt (1842 - 1904) Rhode Island Artist Image Size: 36 x 28 Frame Size: 42.5 x 34.5 Newcomb Macklin Frame. Medium: Oil Dated 1889 "Duck Hunt" Mergansers Edward Chalmers Leavitt (1842 - 1904) Edward Chalmers Leavitt, artist, was born in Providence, Rhode Island, March 9, 1842, the son of Rev. Jonathan and Charlotte Esther (Stearns) Leavitt. His paternal ancestor was John Leavitt, who came to Massachusetts Bay in the first ship and settled in Hingham. On the maternal side, he is descended from John Alden and Priscilla Mullens, who came to Plymouth in the Mayflower. Leavitt was educated in private schools in Providence, and at Kimball Union Academy, Meriden, New Hampshire. During the Civil War in 1862 and 1863, he served in the navy on the U.S.S. Galena. In his profession of artist, Mr. Leavitt is especially noted as a painter of fruit, flowers and still life. He exhibited in the National Academy for several years and has made many successful exhibitions in Providence and Boston. He was a member of the Boston and Providence art clubs, and the Providence Press Club. He was also a member of the Grand Army of the Republic. In politics his proclivities are mainly Republican. He has been twice married: first, May 19, 1877, to Ellen M. Fuller; and second, April 22, 1880, to Elizabeth S. Chace. Submitted November 2004 by Edward Bentley, Art Collector and Researcher from Lansing, Michigan. Source is the publication "Men of Progress: Biographical Sketches and Portraits of Leaders in Business and Professional Life from the State of Rhode Island." New England magazine. 1896. Edward C. Leavitt, born in 1842, has been described as "Providence, Rhode Island's leading still-life painter" in the late 19th Century. (Zellman 324) His teacher, James Morgan Lewin, was a prominent still-life painter in Fall River, Massachusetts, a neighboring town. Leavitt, a detailed, sharp-focused, realistic painter, was in love with texture and light, and was prolific and successful, painting a variety of still life subjects including flowers, fruit and even fish and dead game animals. His objects, including costly antiques and household decorative items, were often placed on ornamental, gleaming surfaces. He was a frequent exhibitor at the National Academy of Design in the 1870s and 1890s. The artist, who died in 1904, moved from a position of success and popularity to being ignored for many years until the publication of William H. Gerdts and Russell Burke's American Still-Life Painting in 1971. It is uncertain whether this disastrous loss of respect took place because Leavitt's work declined in quality during the last decade of his life, or because he was a victim of the periodic shifts in taste and fashion that afflict the arts. Sources: Michael David Zellman, 300 Years of American Art Peter Hastings Falk, Editor, Who Was Who in American Art Biography from Roger King Fine Art Edward Leavitt was one of the leading still life artists of nineteenth century New England. He lived and worked in Providence, and studied with James Morgan Lewin, a leading painter of the Fall River School, which, in the late 19th Century, was one of the most important centers of still life painting. While Lewin branched out into other types of painting, Leavitt remained devoted to the art of the still life. His paintings are sharply focused, realistic, and carefully finished. Ornate objects such as urns, ewers, platters, cut glassware...
