Toppling
Located in Santa Monica, CA
Greenfield's versions are rendered in the Byzantine style of their art historical predecessors, with the black Virgin Mother and Baby Jesus as the central focus within circular compositions, or tondos. These tondos float amongst abstract discs, set within fields of lustrous, gold leaf. The Madonnas predominate before a variety of backgrounds, which were traditionally innocuous. Greenfield, however, presents these backdrops as various revenge fantasies, where white supremacists are cast in the role of victims, suffering the fates...

CATHERINE 6 - Contemporary Realism / Figurative Art / Blonde
Located in New York, NY
The individuals in Stephen Wright’s work confront us visually and psychologically. His paintings tend to transfix. Standing before them, one is drawn in by the intent gaze of a woman, the slumped figure of a nude man, or the averted face of someone lost in reverie. Wright paints mainly solo subjects. They seem always to be slightly removed – yet they challenge, perplex, and attract us. In the manner of the British figurative painters, Wright emphasizes the surface of his canvases, manipulating layers of paint and leaving evidence of his brushwork. Like Lucian Freud and Francis Bacon, and even Jenny Saville...

Mother and Me
Located in New Orleans, LA
Framed Dimensions: 11h x 11w in Alexander Stolin, born and raised in Kiev, Ukraine (under the former Soviet Socialist Republic), where he received intensive training and a master of fine arts degree in his homeland’s traditional art academies. He immigrated to San Francisco in 1992, met his future wife in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, then married and settled in New Orleans. He maintains a home and studio in Madisonville, Louisiana, and is a significant but understated figure in the New Orleans art community. As art critic D. Eric Bookhardt suggested in 2002, “Stolin is more accomplished than he is famous.” His art, often exhibited in thematic series that incorporate a variety of media, ranges from intimate portraits to large-scale murals (one measuring twelve feet by seventy-two feet). He has worked on a progressively larger scale, most recently designing and painting projects for the Louisiana film industry. Stolin’s technically proficient and complexly layered art reflects a unique fusion of the academic training he received in Kiev and his evolving response to the very different culture, lifestyle, and subject matter he has discovered in New Orleans, Madisonville, and the Gulf South. Stolin was born on August 30, 1963. His art abilities were quickly recognized when in fourth grade he qualified for admission to the State School of Art in Kiev, which he attended from 1975 to 1981. He decided to concentrate on book illustration and graphic arts, and after graduating he was accepted into the Ivan Fedorov Polygraphic Institute in Moscow, where he studied from 1982 to 1988, graduating with a master of fine arts degree in 1988. He trained as a printmaker, creating etchings and lithographs, and as a graphic designer, and worked as a designer in Kiev. “I illustrated mysteries, science fiction, and different magazines,” he said. In 1988, after his family visited relatives in San Francisco, California, the Stolins decided to immigrate to the United States, a process that took four years. In 1992, Stolin and his parents immigrated to San Francisco, and he worked for graphic design and print businesses in nearby Emeryville, California. During a trip to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where he was visiting cousins, Stolin met Mary Kay Holmes. The couple soon married and moved to New Orleans, where Stolin established himself as a working artist and began to exhibit in local galleries and group exhibitions. The art Stolin began to create in New Orleans demonstrated his technical skills, knowledge of art history, and the evolving range of his subject matter, reflected from one series and exhibition to the next, yet it was challenging for critics to classify his work. This was evident in the series Stolin exhibited during his first decade in the city, beginning with Byzantium on the Bayou (1993–1994), which combined historical Byzantine art references with New Orleans and Mardi Gras subjects, such as Mardi Gras Madonna and Adoration of St. Gator. In his Midnight Dessert series (1995–1997), he created works such as Tea in Manhattan and Rembrandt and Nathan, a large painting that Bookhardt described as “a vision of Rembrandt and various Dutch masters promenading down the sidewalk past Nathan’s Deli in New York.” Following that, he completed The Water Series (1998–1999), featuring reflective and heavily worked surfaces in paintings such as Reflections #2 and Study of Fish and Swimmers. Stolin’s Face to Face series of portraits, completed from 2000 to 2002, featured New Orleans artists including Douglas Bourgeois...

'I Dare You' Liberty Magazine Cover
Located in Fort Washington, PA
Original cover for Liberty magazine, published February 7, 1931. It’s wintertime and the streets are filled with muddy slush as the children of the neighborhood, Gwendolyn Smithers and Red Hancock, play outside. Red climbs to the top of a swaying wooden fence and begins to walk across it like a tightrope as he brags to Gwendolyn, “I bet you can’t do this.” Hoping he would slip, Gwendolyn giggles, “Ho-ho! I bet I can do it with my eyes shut.” As his ankles shake on the wobbling fence, Red bravely shouts, “I dare you...

Mark Twain
Located in Atlanta, GA
Helene and Eric Bess are a team who have been collaborating for over 20 years. Both are professional artists with extensive experience in both the commercial and fine art fields. They presently work out of their studio in Florida, creating original art for gallery display, fine art crafts and taking commissions for murals & embellishments. Helene was born in Canada in 1949. She studied art in Europe as a young adult and attended Phoenix Pratt School of Design in New York and St. Petersburg Community College in Florida. She worked for advertising agencies and freelance art projects such as theater design and t-shirt designs for several companies. She owned and operated an art studio (“Artistic Endeavors”) in Melbourne, Fl. for five years. She started doing murals and embellishments (residential and commercial) from 1992 till present. She considers her early life in Europe the major source of her artistic influence as well as the works of Modigliani. Eric was born in Missouri in 1950. He started drawing literally as an infant and has never stopped. He was taking commissions for book covers & wall designs in his teens and studied art at Auburn University and The University of Alabama. He taught art in public schools in Alabama in the ‘70s. He worked as art director at Huntsville Educational Television for 6 years, as art director at Southern Sportswear in Daytona for 9 years, at Creative Signs & Designs in Flagler, Fl. for 6 years, and as a freelance artist and co-owner (with his wife Helene) of “BessStudio” (formerly “Artistic Innovations Inc.”) since 1998. His artistic influences include Michelangelo, Vermeer, Blake, Maxfield Parish...

Honeymooning at Greenville, Liberty Magazine Cover, 1923
Located in Fort Washington, PA
“Honeymooning at Greenville: Lil and Sandy Continue Their Scenic Trip,” original cover for Liberty magazine, published July 23, 1927 Sandy and Lil are on their honeymoon, which after an expensive stay at a mosquito-inhabited resort in Greenville, has not been going particularly well. Their disappointing fishing trip left them with more fly bites than fish bites. The newlyweds were eager to board the train, settle in to their sleeping car, and journey to their next destination. When Sandy attempts to bring Lil the glass of water she requested, the train suddenly jerks and ice water spills on a sleeping gentleman in the next berth. “‘Oh! Oh!’ Lil gasped, a witness to her husband’s social blunder. And she wished she were deaf!” (Liberty magazine, July 23, 1927, p. 45) “For the Love o’ Lil: The Picture Story of an American Family” In 1926, under his long-term contract to produce a cover per week for Liberty magazine, Leslie Thrasher introduced a signature cast of characters that appeared each week, telling a serialized story through his illustrations. Liberty touted its new cover serial as “something no magazine has ever done before…Heretofore, all magazine cover...
