Ships Heading to Sea - Dutch 17th century Old Master marine art oil painting
Located in London, GB
This fantastic Dutch Old Master marine oil painting is by noted Dutch marine artist Abraham Storck. Painted circa 1670 the composition is a number of ships heading out to sea, their sails billowing and banners and flags blowing in the wind. The sea is also choppy and clouds race over head. It is an ambitious, busy nautical scene and Storck has perfectly captured the energy and movement of the ships and smaller vessels. This is an excellent example of a 17th century Dutch Old Master oil painting. Provenance: Part of a private collection of Flemish & European paintings. Koller Auctions in Switzerland in 2011. Bonhams 2020. Condition. Oil on canvas, 25 inches by 24 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in an ornate 23 carat gilt carved Lely period frame with name plate, 32 inches by 31 inches and in excellent condition. Abraham Storck (1644-1708) was a Dutch painter, who enjoyed a reputation for his marine paintings, topographical views and Italianate harbour scenes. Storck was also an outstanding draughtsman. Storck was baptized in the Noorderkerk, a Protestant church in the Jordaan. His father was the painter Jan Jansz Sturck (or Johannes Storck) (1603-1673), from Wesel; his mother was Teuntje (Apolonia) Jacobs. The couple married in 1628. Storck had two brothers, who were also painters using the name Sturckenburch until c. 1688 after which they started calling themselves Storck or Sturck. It is likely they were all trained with their father in the family workshop and joined the local Guild of Saint Luke, otherwise it was impossible to sell any painting. Circa 1666 Storck established his workshop producing naval, harbor scenes as well as landscape paintings and city scapes. In 1670 he traveled with his brother Jacob and worked in Germany. In 1694, at age 49, he married the widow Neeltje Pieters van Meyservelt. At the end of his life he lived on Kattenburg near the harbour. Storck's marine and river scenes were influenced by the two Willem van de Veldes (the elder and the younger), Ludolf Bakhuizen...

19th century seascape oil painting of a ship off the Scottish coast
Located in Nr Broadway, Worcestershire
Richard Ball Spencer British, (1812-1897) The Perthshire off Ailsa Craig Oil on canvas, signed Image size: 22.25 inches x 36.25 inches Size including frame: 31 inches x 45 inches This painting by Richard Ball Spencer is of the Perthshire, a three-masted barque sailing off Ailsa Craig. The Perthshire was built in Dundee in 1874 and was owned by Thomas Law of 123 Hope Street, Glasgow. The red ensign flying on the mizzenmast indicates it was a British merchant or passenger ship. The owner may well have commissioned the painting to commemorate its maiden voyage. Ailsa Craig, pictured to the far left, is a small uninhabited island off the west mainland of Scotland in the outer Firth of Clyde. The island is made up of volcanic rock which was quarried in the past and is now only used as a source of microgranite to make curling stones. The island is known by a number of different names including A' Chreag (the rock) and Creag Alasdair (Alasdair's rock). It was also sometimes referred to in the past as ‘Paddy’s Milestone’ as it marked the halfway of the sea journey Belfast to Glasgow made by Irish Emigrants seeking work. Richard Ball Spencer was born in London’s East End on 11 November, 1812 to John and Elizabeth Ball. His father was a grocer and the family lived at 106 York Road in Mile End. Both Richard and his brother Thomas were given their mother’s maiden name as their middle names. By 1841, he had established himself as a marine painter specialising in ship portraits and was influenced by artists such as Joseph Heard (1799-1859), William John Huggins (1781-1845) and Robert Salmon (c1775-1845). He spent his time travelling to trading ports around the British coast as well as the nearby London docks of Brunswick Wharf and the Isle of...

Portrait Of The Screw-Steamer Pennland In New York Harbor
Located in Jacksonville, FL
ntonio Nicolo Gasparo Jacobsen’s Portrait of the Screw-Steamer Pennland in New York Harbor captures the grandeur of maritime travel in the late 19th century. The painting depicts the Pennland, a majestic steamship, cutting through the waters of New York Harbor with billowing smoke rising from its funnel. The vessel is painted with Jacobsen’s signature precision, showcasing the intricate details of its hull, rigging, and deck structures. The serene yet powerful presence of the ship is set against a dynamic harbor scene, where smaller vessels dot the waters and the soft hues of the sky reflect on the gentle waves. Jacobsen’s expert use of perspective and lighting lends a sense of depth and realism, making the viewer feel as though they are witnessing the ship’s arrival firsthand. As one of the most prolific maritime painters of his time, Jacobsen played a crucial role in documenting the golden age of steam travel. His works, including this detailed portrait of the Pennland, not only celebrate the engineering feats of the era but also serve as historical records of significant vessels. The transition from sail to steam was a defining moment in maritime history, and Jacobsen’s meticulous paintings capture this evolution with remarkable accuracy. His contributions to the maritime art movement remain invaluable, preserving the legacy of the great ships that once traversed the world’s oceans. He has been living in England for over thirty years. Nearly all Salvatore Colacicco's paintings during that time have been exported to the United States and sold through Tonkins of Nantucket Island. These now adorn the walls of many a Board Room and Directors Office throughout the States. Colacicco's style of painting very much reminds one of marine artists throughout the 19th century with an obvious Italian feel. Among Colacicco's achievements were 26 panels illustrating the history and development of the paddle steamer (of which he had made a special study of those used on the Italian Lakes), painted for the Russell Cotes Museum in Bournemouth and most works by Salvatore Colacicco fetch good figures even at auction Nice back story to these pieces , We acquired them from a gentleman that went to school with the artist son in Bournemouth , His Father purchased these ones from the artist roundabout 1960 . Portrait Of The Steam/Sail Ship The Prins Frederik Hendrik.
Located in Jacksonville, FL
This oil is a classic example of Jacobsen's work from his best period done way before 1900. In these oils the water is done with great sense of naturalism, due to his constant experiences at the harbors in New York and New Jersey. It is his best work when the sails are up and the steam stacks are in full blast. An unusual note is that this painting is on its original canvas and is in extraordinary condition. Most Jacobsens have endured rounds of restoration which makes this painting's condition special. This was a commissioned piece from the Captain of the flagship, Prince Frederik Hendrick, a great king during the Dutch golden age in the 17th century. The Captain was very proud of this vessel, and upon the safe entrance into the New York port, hired Jacobsen to commemorate this voyage. Two Boats and a Can
Located in Burlingame, CA
“Mary Robertson’s joyous and meditative paintings are are colorful simulations of contentment and sacred play.” Wayne Thiebaud. Steeped in the Bay Area figurative movement, Mary Robertson’s oeuvre focuses on an area she knows intimately—Northern California's Russian River, where she has been painting for over 25 years. The region’s beaches, umbrellas, floats, and figures are iconic in the quiet and intimate paintings of Robertson, but it is the afternoon Bay Area light that takes center stage, as it interacts with the landscape to create the real magic. Her oil paintings and watercolors have an affinity with the American Realists, the Impressionists, and the Pointillists such as Seurat. When taking in a Robertson scene, there is a sense of time standing still, and being bathed in a lazy California summer glow that doesn’t fade. 'Two Boats...

Rigging the Line
Located in Burlingame, CA
The subtle and brilliant work of art is meticulously hand painted by Lynette Cook, who realistically depicts scenes that she sees during her morning walks through the city, yet her paintings tend to reveal more than what initially meets the eye. Exterior facades of urban dwellings that are both architecturally complex — and mundane — are the focus of Cook’s Shadows and Silhouettes series of contemporary photorealistic acrylic paintings that capture San Francisco and other Northern California towns and convey the stories of their inhabitants. The paintings often feature the rhythmic dark-light dance of light traveling through wrought-iron balconies and inner-city fire escapes, and captures that which is universal and connects all people in their elemental desire to create a sense of home.
