A young poet or artist, French Romantic period portrait of a sensitive figure
Located in Norwich, GB
You will find this young man good company! It is a pleasure to study his thoughtful, sensitive face. He has a benevolent and real presence. To my mind, he certainly has an artistic nature - he looks like a thinker, poet and/or musician.
Dating from what the French call the Romantic Period, the early 1800s, our painting is monogrammed AG and may be attributed to Auguste Glaize.
Born in Montpellier, Auguste Glaize studied under the painters Achille Devéria and Eugène Devéria.
He came to be one of the great French Romantic painters of the early 19th century, marking his career with important history paintings and cycles of monumental religious...

Victorian Marine Seascape Large Oil Painting of Pure Seas and Shimmering Light
Located in ludlow, GB
Victorian Marine Seascape Large Oil Painting of Pure Seas and Shimmering Light by the absolute Master of Pure Seas Paintings. This is a beautiful, ethereal work by Henry Moore (THE Henry Moore and not the famous Sculptor!).
The seascape we have for sale is an exquisite example of Moore’s sea-painting (he began painting the sea in the late 1860s), this, produced at the height of his fame and talents, it was painted in 1891. In it he captures the rolling waves as they catch the light and conveys a cool beauty within this deceptively simple composition. There may be a hint of a vessel in the background but maybe it is a trick of the light!! The seagulls dance in the foreground.
Moore manages to straddle two enormous art...

This antique book cover is in very good condition, commensurate with its age.
The frame presentation is new and in excellent condition. Combined, it wants for nothing and is supplied ready to hang and display.
The story of these panels and of their artist is fascinating, and begins in 13th century Siena:
The Biccherna was the person who held the position of Magistrate of Chancellery of Finance from the 13th to the 14th century for the republic and the city of Siena, in the Tuscany region of Italy. The records of that office were very important because Siena was one of the earliest and most significant banking centres in Italy, and indeed in Europe. It became the fashion to keep banking and taxation records of the region in large books with painted leather covers. These were originally made from wood and leather. In the competition to make these ever more prestigious the bindings and panels on the front and rear of the books were painted by the major artists of the day, such as Giovanni di Paolo. Many of these mainly secular covers are displayed in the Archives of the State of Siena located in the Palazzo Piccolmini.
The Gothic Revival of the 19th century occurred partly as a reaction against the progress of industrialisation in Europe generally. It was however greatly affected by the unification of Italy in the second half of the 19th century. This led to the closure and downsizing of many religious institutions, which resulted in the dispersal of thousands of works of art dating from the Middle Ages and early Renaissance. Many aristocratic and bourgeois families struggled to pay debts or simply to make ends meet and so they sold off their private collections and family heirlooms. There was then an influx of goods into the antiques market which provided a great deal of work for Italy’s restorers and craftsmen, since many of these pieces were in need of cleaning, repair and, in keeping with the interventionist tastes of the times, radical restoration, before they could be sold on, often to foreign buyers. These early Italian works became so fashionable that demand soon outstripped supply. This in turn gave rise to a new type of artist-craftsman capable of turning out from scratch increasingly convincing reproductions, imitations and out-and-out fakes.
Siena naturally became the epicentre of this thriving cottage industry because of the extraordinary continuity there in traditional craft skills. This technical expertise had been handed down from generation to generation, and it was perhaps inevitable that a number of artists with real talent, the flair of commerce and a genuine love and understanding of antique Sienese art should adapt their skills to these new market conditions. Among these artists were Igino Gottardi, Alceo Dossena, Fulvio Corsini, Umberto Giunti...

Jean Baptiste Discart, Portrait Of A Lady With A Yellow Rose
Located in Cheltenham, GB
This fine late 19th-century portrait by renowned Italian artist Jean Baptiste Discart (1856-1944) depicts a lady wearing a black dress embellished with a lace collar, together with a single yellow rose. It’s catalogued (#3) in Theo P.G. Kralt’s book, Jean Baptiste Discart, Orientalist Paintings and Dutch Portraits.
A provocative rose draws one’s eye to the ‘décolletage’. Was it her idea or the bold suggestion of a young Discart, just 21, and bursting with energy? The style of dress came to the fore during the late 19th century and was regarded as somewhat improper by a stoic older generation. But, of course, the glaring eyes only encouraged young ladies to rebel and adopt the fashion regardless.
Little is known about the sitter, but it’s conceivable that she’s either Austrian or French, given Discart’s known locations in 1879. It was completed during his training. It bears all the hallmarks of a young and confident painter looking to establish himself.
Born in Modena, Italy, Discart’s father, Francesco Ferdinando, moved in particularly distinguished circles and worked for the Duke of Modena. Indeed, the Duke became young Jean’s godfather, so the pair were well-connected. One can only imagine the ostentatious interiors that he witnessed during childhood, and it’s conceivable that these experiences inspired his appreciation for the finer things in life.
At 14, he was enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he trained under the German painter, Anselm Feuerbach (1829-1880). It seems that he stayed here until Feuerbach’s retirement in 1877 when the course was handed over to Leopold Carl Müller (1834-1892). His short time under Müller, known for his exquisite ‘orientalist’ work, would be transformative.
From here, he left Vienna to immerse himself in the cosmopolitan environs of the French Capital and exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1884. At that point in time, Paris was an exciting place for an emerging artist. In 1884, the Société des Artistes Indépendants held their first show, which included works by Paul Cézanne...

Saw-bill Hummingbirds and Nest: Framed 19th C. Hand-colored Lithograph by Gould
Located in Alamo, CA
This is a hand-colored folio sized lithograph entitled "Grypus Naevius" (Saw-bill Hummingbird with Nest & Eggs) by John Gould, published in his "A Monograph of the Trochilidae, or Family of Humming-birds", published in London in 1850. The print, which was drawn by Gould and Henry Richter and lithographed by Hullmandel and Walton, depicts three black, brown and peach-colored hummingbirds about a nest, containing at least two eggs. The beautiful soft grey-green foliage includes a white, soft pink and cranberry-colored flower.
This beautiful Gould hand-colored hummingbird lithograph is augmented with iridescent gum-arabic paint. It is in excellent condition. The original text page is included, which has extensive foxing, as lower quality paper was used for the text pages.
There are several other unframed Gould hummingbird lithographs available via our 1stdibs storefront. Two or more of these would make an attractive display grouping. A discount is available for purchase of a set depending on the number. These additional Gould hummingbirds...

John Constable
Constable was born in East Bergholt, Suffolk on 11 June 1776 and attended a school in Lavenham and his father hoped he would enter the church. His father was adamant that he would not be a painter as a profession. He met a local man named John Dunthorne who painted local scenes, mainly in nearby fields. His love of all things natural stemmed from this. Later he copied works by Girtin from a book that was lent to him by Sir George Beaumont...

Farmyard Scene with Horses and Goat
Oil on panel, unsigned
The Circle of John Frederick Herring Sr.
Circa 1880
Presented in a later gilt and painted frame
This finely rendered 19th-century English farmyard scene captures the quiet dignity of rural life, with a group of three horses—white, chestnut, and black—gathered beneath a tree in the warm light of late afternoon. A small goat stands to one side near a rustic stable, adding a note of charming domesticity to the composition. The surrounding landscape, with its distant hills and careful play of shadow and cloud, speaks to the artist’s sensitivity to atmosphere and detail.
Though unsigned, the painting is executed in a manner closely aligned with the work of John Frederick Herring Senior, one of Britain’s most celebrated animal painters of the Victorian era. The careful modelling of the horses, their distinctive postures and anatomy, and the tranquil farm setting are all hallmarks of Herring’s influence. Painted in oils on a wooden panel, the surface retains a fine, even gloss and a warm palette typical of the period.
The composition is both balanced and lyrical: the interplay of form and gesture among the animals invites the viewer into a moment of repose between work and activity, emblematic of Victorian ideals of harmony between man, beast, and the land.
A delightful example of 19th-century English rural painting...
