Malcolm Lubliner was in the right place at the right time. The artist had been working and teaching in Southern California for a number of years before he became a full-time photographer in 1968. Entrenched in Los Angeles’s burgeoning art scene, Lubliner was hired as a contract photographer for the publishing workshop Gemini G.E.L. to document its behind-the-scenes activities. He would later become the official photographer for the Art and Technology Program at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), which paired artists with technology companies in the region. Lubliner’s collection of negatives, contact sheets, and prints—newly catalogued as part of the special collections at the Getty Research Institute—showcases some of the 20th century’s most notable artists and demonstrates his insight into their artistic processes. Lubliner photographed the technical and collaborative efforts that went into producing iconic works such as Jasper Johns’s Numerals, Claes Oldenburg’s Giant Ice Bag, and Frank Stella’s Protractor series, while also creating intimate portraits of the individual artists as the driving forces behind them. He captured artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, Robert Irwin, Richard Serra, John Altoon, and Sam Francis at work both at Gemini and in their own studios. Also present in many of the photographs are staff members of Gemini, including Kenneth Tyler and Stanley Grinstein. An equally important part of the collection are Lubliner’s photographs of social events that were held by Los Angeles’s prominent art collectors and dealers. Accomplished and rising artists alike mingled and celebrated with the art world’s movers and shakers, such as Leo Castelli, Betty Asher, and Maurice Tuchman, establishing partnerships that would help define their careers. Gleb Derujinsky's career as a fashion photographer took hold in the golden age of European haute couture, when Balenciaga and Pierre Balmain were at the top of their game and Yves Saint Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld were designing their first runway shows. His ideas were revolutionary and they gave rise to the mystique and glamour that is now pervasive in fashion. Derujinsky was the quintessential Renaissance man photographer, award-winning cinematographer and commercial director, inventor, WWII veteran, world traveler, jewelry designer, musician, ski instructor, Ferrari America race-car driver, and champion glider pilot. His passion for photography started at the tender age of six, by ten, he had built a photo enlarger, and as a teenager, he became the youngest member of the Camera Club of New York. That’s what emerges when you take a photojournalist by study, fashion photographer by trade and fine artist by instinct and leave him alone with his camera and a muse. Burris’ work is influenced by his early career spent working with fashion photographer Bill King and inspired by the decisive moment made known by the Henri Cartier Bresson. He defies the confines of either discipline. It is not fashion photography, which is by nature produced, but rather purely spontaneous. Todd left the world of fashion photography after building his own career in Milan and New York to go to LA and find his niche. He embraced his fascination with flea markets and penchant for discarded items that wouldn’t ever be chosen because they were trendy but because they were interesting. Burris packed his 1979 white Pontiac station wagon with his finds. When he came upon a stage that fit the props, he called on his muses and created a visual story on the spur of a moment. The collection of black and white images conveys a sense of effervescence and Élan. It includes photographs from Burris' time in Los Angeles as well as earlier experimental work in Milan and New York City. Anything but superficial, the invitational image, "Paget #1" challenges the traditional symmetry of beauty. We see a dramatic close up of a woman’s face, her intense eyes framed by the stark contrast between her porcelain skin and jet black hair. The lighting is such that her face is divided by shadow, one half dark and mysterious, the other half light and classically beautiful. The effect is deeply engaging.
