The Robin Rice Gallery announces a solo photography exhibition by Pete Kelly. The opening reception will be held May 3, 2017 with the show running through June 25, 2017.
Pete Kelly’s latest show admirably showcases the lush greenness, diverse landscape, and ever-fleeting light of the British terrain. We are invited to join his excursions throughout the country as he brings light to the captivating, idiosyncratic characteristics of the land. He captures the oddities of the landscape; solitary figures bathing in sunlight, silhouette of a frolicking Great Dane in the mist, and subtle remnants of a bygone era. Kelly’s incredibly unique, picturesque editing style further mythologizes his subjects, he meddles with an air of mystery that defines the viewers experience.
Kelly employs a mixture of a single image with layers of photographs of textures. The feel and look of the end result pay homage to English romanticist landscape painters such as J.M.W Turner and Constable. Kelly applies varnish and then uses Photographic Encaustic wax over the print. He encases the archival pigment print in beeswax and damar resin; tree sap in its purest form. These organic components have been found to have preserving qualities by ancient Egyptians, which replace the need for glass over the photograph. The impersonality of a raw digital file is alleviated through this process and makes the image a ‘one off. Combining modern photographic and printing technology with ancient crafting techniques, Kelly
is the originator of art that is tactile, archival and organic.
In one image entitled ‘Brabyns Autumn” examines man’s contemporaneously interruptive and complimentary relationship with the surrounding land, and zeros in on a serenity only manifested when man and nature successfully coexist. Small figures, animals, and dwellings found in the landscape are essential points of interest for Kelly. Using nature as a tool for fortifying scale and perspective, Kelly magnificently reinforces the grandiose essence of nature as opposed to the insignificant disposition of man. Kelly’s tiny...

In the hazy, warm New York summer, little is more refreshing than reclining on the beach in the mist of the icy ocean waves or enjoying a family trip to the country house. Each summer, Rice curates her favorite show, the Summertime Salon, which reminds us of this exact seasonal sentiment. The two, long walls of the gallery become mosaicked, top to bottom, side to side, in photographs that evoke all the preeminent feelings and memories of summer. Each year, the Summertime Salon matures and Rice’s annual masterpiece comes into fruition. This year is no exception. The show is a haven of what the Robin Rice Gallery stands for, a community of art and experience.
As the largest annual exhibition, the Summertime Salon is carefully pieced together, the results are staggering. The works of the 53 gallery artists come together communally, reinforcing the overall sense of unity that the show creates as a whole. In knowing the photographs so fluently, Rice strategically places them together in a way that will enhance the individual stories contained in each. Every year, the gallery owner curates the show to best exemplify the 56 exhibited artists’ strengths and aesthetics, remaining cohesively linked by Robin’s extensive knowledge of her artists and of photography. “This is my favorite exhibit, even though it takes months to curate and a week to install,” says Robin. “It is my curatorial showcase.” From floor to ceiling, the walls of the gallery rooms are a mosaic of nearly a hundred photographs, their various sizes, color schemes and subject matter expertly laid out to fit together like the pieces of an eclectic puzzle.
This year’s invitational image, “Beach Samba” by Patricia Heal, is a portrait of a woman in a large, orange-red sunhat, whose downward gaze obscures her face entirely. The photograph titled "You Are Here" by Anne Valverde exhibits a minimalistic seascape where the vastness of the sea meets the expansive sky. The crisp horizon line divides the image into two broad swaths of muted color, imparting a sense of calm and infinity. The foreground is a textured white that looks almost like a continuation of the sea's surface, adding depth and grounding the photograph in a tangible reality.
Against this serene backdrop, the phrase "You Are Here" is superimposed in a style reminiscent of neon signage. The contrast of the modern, human-made font with the natural setting plays on the idea of place and presence. It serves both as a marker of physical location and a philosophical statement about being present in the moment, offering a dual commentary on geography and consciousness.
The artwork’s essence lies in its call for contemplation. In a world often dominated by haste and distraction, Valverde’s work is a gentle prompt to acknowledge and savor the present. The text acts as an anchor, pulling the viewer back from wherever their mind might wander, back to the 'here' that is not just a point in space, but a moment in time.
The composition and the inclusion of the text work together to evoke a reflection on solitude and connectivity. In the absence of any human figures or traces of civilization other than the text, the image suggests isolation, yet the words imply a connection to the viewer. It is this paradox that enriches the photograph, encouraging a deeper engagement with the layers of meaning behind the simplicity of the captured scene.
Since 2015, Valverde has been working on a neon light installation project in several countries, which she materialises through photography. The DREAM ART PROJECT
Her portfolio “City Icons” in 2008 brought her work to public attention. A series about Iconic Monuments from Major cities like Paris, New York, Hong Kong, London, Dubaï… Writing with Neon brings together two passions for Anne Valverde: light and words thus incorporating her main medium of expression: Photography.
Valverde brings artificial light to areas where electricity is absent, creating a dissonance in the landscape and an unexpected and dreamlike light, creating a new message, independent from preexisting signs and words.
Valverde’s first message is "dream", as she invites the viewer to go past reality and reflect on open spaces for escape in a complex and tormented world.
Some themes are recurring: an amused gaze on social media omnipresence, hyper-connectivity or even office language shortcuts. This contemplation of the natural landscape suddenly opens up to a perspective on social evolution. By inserting neon lights in her photographs, she initiates a return...
