The Capuchin monkey is instantly recognised due to its distinctive two tone colouring which of course also led to the Italian word Cappuccino. The word itself originally derives from the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin, an offshoot from the Franciscans, who wear brown robes with large hoods. It is a very expressionist full-face, close-up portrait of a young African American man. The very contrasted lighting makes it very powerful and very sculptural.
Jean-Luc Fievet is best known for his black and white photographs portraying people and everyday street life. His work is marked by both an expressionistic approach for the close-up portraits, as well as a documentary freshness for the street scenes portraying the every-day life of different urban realities.
Jean-Luc’s journey into photography began by recording intimate moments of his family and the families of close friends. When he moved to Paris he discovered a new world that he adopted immediately, the city. His work then led him to New York, where he settled permanently. He states: “Photography for me is a constant exploration of powerful emotions, of sensuality, of the reality around me and the dreams within.”

Jake recalls the session: “I travelled from NYC to London in February 2004 to do a press shoot with Amy Winehouse. It was a classic February day: cold, wet, foggy and dark by about 4pm. We met at her flat and went to a few of her local haunts: a cafe, a launderette, Primrose Hill. The record company were very hands off and didn’t pressure us to do any particular set ups. We just went with the flow. She was really entertaining: funny, smart and cooly indiscreet. I am a huge jazz fan and I remember we talked about music, London and New York.”
