About the Item

Artist: Larry Rivers (1923-2002) Title: Victims—Crispus Attucks (Boston Massacre) Year: 1970 Medium: Silkscreen and collage on wove paper Edition: 25/150, plus proofs Size: 19 x 27.75 inches Condition: Good Inscription: Signed and numbered by the artist Notes: In this artwork, Crispus Attucks (c. 1723 – March 5, 1770) is depicted. Crispus Attuckswas an African American whaler, sailor, and stevedore of African and Native American descent, who is traditionally regarded as the first person killed in the Boston Massacre, and as a result the first American killed in the American Revolution. Published by Kelpra Studios, London. Larry Rivers’s 1970 series Boston Massacre was created to mark the bicentennial of the infamous event. The 1770 skirmish that resulted in five civilian deaths rocked the thirteen colonies, quickly becoming a rallying cry and the means of encouraging support for the revolutionary cause. Throughout the artistic series, Rivers uses this canonical American historic event to provoke connections to the Vietnam War, which was raging as the works were created. Through his use of emblematic imagery and multimedia process, Rivers communicates the hypocritical nature of armed conflict, specifically that of the the Vietnam War, and reveals the complex relationship between subject matter and multiplying perspectives that accrue around major historical events. LARRY RIVERS (1923-2002) Painter and sculptor Larry Rivers became one of the first artists to explore the figurative style which follows abstract expressionism. While Rivers's style strikes a balance between abstract expressionism and realistic renderings, his free painterly brushwork and tightly drawn images float ambiguously in space with blurred images and smears. These blurred, smudgy images were not accidental, but part of a deliberate process. His landscapes, portraits and figure studies are considered reactionary by contemporary critics because of their realistic composition.

About the Artist: José Luis Cuevas is a Mexican artist who worked primarily with etchings, illustrations, sculptures, and paintings, though he is perhaps best known for his drawings. According to Cuevas, “perhaps because I was born in a paper mill and pencil factory, paper has always had a great fascination for me.” He briefly attended the eminent Mexican institution Escuela de Pintura, however Cuevas considers himself a self-taught draughtsman in search of an alternative to the Mexican Muralists and their social messages. For Cuevas, his drawings represent the isolation of man and an inability to communicate, many of his drawings featuring distorted human figures and figures transformed into animals. His work was inspired by the graphic styles of Francisco de Goya, Pablo Picasso, and José Guadalupe Posada...
