(1927-2020) Born in 1927 in Ain El Sindianeh, (Shoueir) Matn, North Lebanon, Halim Jurdak began his artistic training at the Lebanese Academy of Fine Art in 1953. He is the first Lebanese artist to work in the medium of etching and engraving on an equal footing with painting and drawing. His work has won many prizes, including the first prize for Engraving at the Annual Exhibition of the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris. He has participated in numerous international and regional exhibitions and began teaching at the Institute of Fine Arts of the Lebanese University in Beirut in 1966. This work bears the influence of Stanley William Hayter and the Atelier 17 Jurdak began his artistic training at the Lebanese Academy of Fine Art in 1953 and went on to receive his Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from “Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts” in Paris. He attended the Atelier Brianchon pour la peinture, et Atelier Cami et Bercier pour la gravure. He also frequented l’atelier of Surrealist Henri Bernard Goetz and l’atelier Yves Brayer at the Académie de la grande Chaumière. He also studied at L’Académie Andre Lhote. He travelled extensively, visiting Munich, Stuttgart, Basel, Dornoch, London, Bruges, Rome, Athens, Quebec, Montreal, Los Angles, Chicago, Milwaukee and New York. Made contacts with artists and galleries and showed regularly. He also began making abstract sculpture. From each Arab Country, one artist was chosen for this encounter. Arabic Biennales and Exhibitions: 1967: Arab Art Exhibition organized by the British company for tobacco Eight paintings were chosen for eight artists belonging to each of the following arab countries: Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Irak, Kuwait, Bahrain and Egypt. The exhibition took place successively in London, Paris, Rome, Cairo, Manameh, Amman, Kuwait, Baghdad, Damascus and Beirut. Jurdak’s style has evolved greatly over his long career, from academic realism to cubism, from figurative abstraction, to non-figurative abstraction, in which he focused on forms, patterns, colour and composition. His most recent works have centered on the elemental qualities of the human figure. Jurdak has written numerous artistic and literary articles and has written several books on art theory, including The Metamorphosis of Line and Colour in 1975 (dealing with the psychological reasons underlying modern and contemporary fine art movements) and The Eye of Contentment, published in 1995. Marc Balakjian was enigmatic in his subject matter creating images that are disturbing in their ambiguity. Is this image just striped fabric tied with ropes on a platform or is this is a flag-draped coffin symbolizing those who passed "in memory of an historic phrase"? Politicians may turn the phrase but a price must be paid. This small edition mezzotint was created in 1975 in an edition of only 5. Armenian by descent, Marc Balakjian was raised in Lebanon. He spent his early years in the small town of Rayak, before moving to Beirut at the age of 10. He came to England in 1966, initially to study architecture with a firm in Oxford. He then decided to study art at Hammersmith College of Art and took up a postgraduate degree in printmaking at the Slade School of Art in 1971. After graduating he began working at Studio Prints in 1973, just as it was establishing itself in Queen’s Crescent. By 1976 he had become a full time partner, collaborating with other artists as well as continuing his own work, much of which is inspired by his Armenian and Lebanese culture and heritage. By the 1980s work was falling off, so Balakjian and Studio Prints introduced in-house plate-making to serve painters and sculptors who had little experience with printmaking. Image size 10 3/16 x 7 inches; sheet size 18 1/8 x 12 1/4 inches. Matted to museum standards, unframed. ABOUT THIS WORK In 1950 Hayter returned to Paris and reopened Atelier 17. Works such as 'Fire Under Water' reveal newfound influences, such as that of the Ardèche area of southern France, where he acquired a house in 1951 and frequently visited. Hayter took great interest in the flowing Escoutay River, an experience that parallels the artist and co-director of Atelier 17 Krishna Reddy’s interest in depicting water. While some forms in this print evoke the natural world, the palette of contrasting tones of purple, yellow, black, and white reflects Hayter’s belief in using color intuitively to express emotions and evoke feelings. He emerged from the Washington, D.C. scene in the mid 1960s with works that elaborated upon and disrupted the ethos of Color School painting. Minor skinning and tape residue on the top and bottom sheet edges, verso, otherwise in excellent condition. Matted to museum standards, unframed. Image size 13 7/8 x 19 1/2 inches (146 x 108 mm); sheet size 19 7/8 x 25 3/8 inches (394 x 292 mm). Hayter created this work using engraving and scorper on 2 plates, printed side by side. He used alkali blue, printed intaglio, and a phthalo green with a hard roller on the surface. The proofing was in three states, the first with engraving (a single proof); the second adding further engraving and scorper (a single proof); the third added further engraving and editioned: color trial proofs, 5 artist's proofs, edition of 50. The edition was completed in three printings: 8 in 1967; then Hector Saunier printed numbers 9 through 18 in 1968, and numbers 19 through 50 in 1969. This impression is from the Saunier 1968 printing. Note: the online image cannot accurately convey the vibrancy of the printed alkali blue/phthalo green.
